Where did any of the artists who replied in this thread take on this stance?

I haven't seen any of the real condescending "the working man's a sucker" philosophy that permeates so much of rap.
that was me.

you're lucky you live in NY otherwise you'd be paying a car note too.
That's the whole deal, the only real shitty thing about doing it full time is you make sacrifices out the ass bone, To me it's a blue collar job at this level at best. So unless your goal is to play on player you do it as long as you're good with that, sure some one might get lucky that's always there but never should be expected.

This is an informative and real thread with fuckery kept to a minimum.

I'm curious though. How do cash rulz, ardamus, pack fm, icon, mindbender, intuition, rob sonic, and maclethal manage to record for free, distribute, and book shows for free.

From what i read in your posts over the years y'all never have to come out of pocket but seem to always profit and support yourself.

recording for free is easy; i imagine every one of the rappers you named have a studio set up or at least a friend with one. the mixing and mastering is what costs the real money. and booking shows for free should be a no-brainer; pay to play schemes are a shitty way to throw shows. you push your shit to bookers/club managers, you weasel your way on to other folks' bills and impress the bookers enough for them to invite you back, etc.

distribution, i have no clue. i'm pretty sure distribution isn't free, and a lot of money-spending goes on behind the curtain.

Life is too short to be miserable in what you spend the majority of your time doing. I grew up shitting in an outhouse, the fuck I look like pursuing something I hate for the "possibility of comfort"?

I had an art scholarship but a B.A. in graphic design ain't bustin' no grapes, either. I could have majored in something that would make more money...but I am an artist, period, so doing anything other than that is just "a job" to me.

Before I started taking music seriously I'd sold shoes, I'd built lawnmower motors, I'd worked as an IDC technician with benefits and a 401k -- all felt exactly the same.

I am not married and have no kids. I make art, art pays the bills...if and when it does not, I will work a job and make art in my spare time.

Pretty simple.

Like someone already said -- Jay Electronica's biggest Phila dickriders are some of the same one's bashing rappers and telling them to hang it up. I guess its cool to be an unaccomplished, formerly homeless 34 year old rapper if YOU think they're dope. Fuck out of here.

And I think there are some defensive people on both sides of this -- I understand Thun's point, but even he would agree no woman has ever tatted one of his spreadsheets on her body.

Desk, pen, dump truck -- do what the fuck you enjoy.

I'd venture to say the more time someone spends on a site like this, the less they enjoy what they do for a living -- cus if they did enjoy it, they'd be over there doing that shit. *looks at post counts*

Wow, you're right! That is totally worth it! If I start rapping now, how long do you think it will be before I get some of my lyrics tattooed over Estelle Getty on this chick?

Whoa, slow down.

How about leaving something as fleeting as a cumstain on a woman first before getting all crazy? Baby-steps.

Not cool. Mindbender and I are deeply offended by that post.

Kno, nobody gives a shit whether you choose art over the much maligned "cubicle job."

Just don't ever act like working at a real job is some kind of hell that the majority of mankind would simply not endure if they could instead tour alongside Blueprint and Little Brother. That's just fucking stupid on numerous levels.

Also, how is Jay Electronica unaccomplished if he's made songs better than all underground rappers since 1997 combined?

Your first album was financed by Jay Seagraves. That still haunts you to this day. No matter how many times you take a Freddie Gibbs snowball, you'll see the face of Lord Fard stuffing dollar bills in your g-string.

Apparently Gloss does, he made a thread about it.

Didn't and never have. I just said do what you enjoy, regardless of what that is. If music is ever "over" for me I'll be making art, probably in a cubicle, when I finish up these last credits to get my degree. I'll be content designing menus for Ruby Tuesday because I'm able to create.

Cashmere is a good example of a "real-life" friend of mine who seems 100 times more happy continually educating himself and making moves in a corporate environment versus dealing with this dumb rap shit -- but he still does rap on the side because he's good at it and he likes it.

I've been involved in about 10+ releases funded by "other people's money", yet we own all our digital rights, masters and publishing. Its called smart business.

I don't care about "10+ releases" of anything Cunninlynguists related seeing as you guys rank somewhere between Cyndi Lauper and Me Phi Me. The point is the Cunninlynguists' begged Lord Fard for seed money. The origins of your career are forever locked away in rolls of fat.
