Forgive me if my first post came off as hokey or defensive. I wasn't frowning on having a normal job. My girlfriend has a normal job. I may end up with a normal job at some point. And sure, not everyone desires to tour and make music. Working a job, getting a nice check, and going home and forgetting about it has it's appeal too. I have to spend 24 hours a day calculating my next move. It requires a lot. There really isn't time off. Even downtime is spent organizing thoughts and creative ideas.
I put a lot of energy into music. I am pretty prolific, and dedicate a lot to recording, touring, and merching. If it no longer works, one day, I will have no problem putting all of that energy into something else. Yes, I will have to start at square one again. But fuck it. I know how hard I work when I become dedicated to something. The risk is worth it. The nice thing is, we are already mapping out ideas that are independent of the music business.
In the next year, one of our immediate plans, is to open a liquor store (that will double as a label office too). It will be very focused on high-end beer. And luckily, that is another passion of mine, so I won't have a problem loving my work, loving the products we sell, and being able to accommodate the customers. I may know more about Founder's brewery, or various trappistes, trippels and cask aged stouts than I do mixtapes anyways.
I guess my biggest thing is loving what you do. I agree with Alaska, if it is no longer fun, and not even generating income, then quit. But it sucks when people seem to only make music because they hope to make a lot of money at it one day. It's obviously not that black and white. Compromise has many different shades.

The real question here, though, is how have any of these generic hacks like Pack F.M, IconTheGlassJawKing and MacLethal ever made a dime off rap? There are really people out there who pay money to see/listen to peasants like Pack F.M and IconTheMicKing in 2010?

I mean, why should anyone have an issue with my opinion. I get not everybody (you and Willie D) like Jay Electronica but he possess something that almost no one here has. It's not to say this board doesn't have dope rappers, I think we have a bunch but Jay is something special.Cash Rulz wrote:Is this necessary?Philaflava wrote:And all jokes aside Jay Elect has more talent in one finger than most of the rappers on Philaflava or anywhere for that matter. Of course you can have your opinion. But the minute Jay Elec and PF rappers get mentioned in the same thread it instantly becomes a how much better he is than PF rappers and I just belief it counter productive to things in this thread.
I feel like the topic has been already beat to death by people much more important than me. But my short answer is when music no longer elicits any enjoyment and feels almost exclusively like a chore. I work 60 hours a week at two day jobs, so personally music helps me escape the banality of that. I only started making beats in the past 2 years or so. I know it ain't shit to like 90% of the people in this thread, but getting to open for cats like P.O.S., Eyedea & Abilities, Astronautalis and others is more than I ever thought would come from it.
That said, I realized a long time ago that making non-rap music is generally a far more profitable venture for me. So if I was doing music for a living, I'd probably sell out and do my Rick Rubin forum shit like <embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... esign=true" width="470" height="36" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d> instead of rap. I havent looked through this whole thread, but Im gonna guess that a few rappers have said they are happier and better people for doing what theyre doing than the poor saps who sit in cubicles all day who hate themselves because they were too scared to follow their dreams, which is pretty much everyone else who doesnt rap, no?
Naw, the rappers said they're okay with their decisions re:throwing their lives away. Then Thun was all, "Well, noone in the world will give a fuck about your music in the future.", and then the rappers didn't really respond to that because that wasn't relevant to the discussion. Then there's a page and a half about Jay Electronica because you know, why not right?Harry Hater wrote:I havent looked through this whole thread, but Im gonna guess that a few rappers have said they are happier and better people for doing what theyre doing than the poor saps who sit in cubicles all day who hate themselves because they were too scared to follow their dreams, which is pretty much everyone else who doesnt rap, no?
I didn't bring up jay Elect for the purpose of pitting him against the people who frequent this board and also happen to rap. I brought it up because he is the antithesis of Gloss' side of the argument, yet Gloss loves him so much. That's irony of it. Jay Electronica is a 35-36 year old rapper who didn't become even slightly successful until last year. Sure he rapped for years before his success like very other person on this board who raps, successful or not, but he didn't really come out until last year, or the year before that, not to mention the fact that he has been homeless, on and off, through his fucking 20's.
I wonder how he met Erika Badu.
