The World Cup is my most favorite sporting event. This years was exciting. The US squad, who ranked highly before the games started, played rather poorly, while Ghana, ranked dead last among the teams involved, played very good ball and exceeded expectations by advancing among their group. Australia's team, nicknamed the Socceroos, surprised many with their play as well. Brazil's Ronaldo set a World Cup record with his 15th career goal.
The final game between Italy and France was great, although I hate seeing a game, especially one at this magnitude, end in a penalty kick shootout. I was happy that Italy one, as my fathers family comes from Italian heritage. I was however disappointed with the way Zinedine Zidane left the game. A stupid penalty like that (see below) will forever tarnish his image. As great a player he is, he will now most likely forever be remembered for headbutting Marco Materazzi.
Germany was a great host for this World Cup. Some of those stadiums were amazing to see. I only wish I could've been there live.
I am eagerly awaiting the next World Cup in 2010 which South Africa will be hosting.

If it was something racial that was said, then I applaud Zidane. After all the years he's had to put up with that racial shit, and all the racial shit his team has had to endure, that's a good way to end it if that was the case.

The only good thing about the cup being over is that I don't have to look at that stupid kid and hear that gay ass song again and again and again.

I know that the French hate muslims and jews, but what's the racial slant to this? Zidane is white, after all, though probably muslim too since he's Algerian. Fill me in.

Goddammit. I'm still not sure how the Italians managed to win this.

They never really struck me as a great team, although their defense and keeper were good. They seemed content to sit on their half of the field with the occassional counterattack. They looked extremely beatable throughout the tournament, but noone could take advantage of all the chances they had.

I thought France played the better game, especially from halftime on. A quality save on Zidane's header in the first overtime. Why was Henry on the bench at the end? Even if he was cramping he should have tried to play it out, the Italians weren't really doing anything either. If Henry pulled himself out then he deserves all the comments about him being soft.

The French penalty was complete horseshit, I don't think the guy even got touched. It would have been ironic that the greatest floppers in the world went down 1-0 to a flop.

And then there's Zidane.....I don't care what Materazzi was saying, you can't react like that in a game of that magnitude. He should have gone over to Italy's captain Cannavaro, the ref, or at least waited til the game was over. I'm not sure that the line judge even saw the play as it happened. Apparently they were showing it on the big screen in the stadium which makes it easy for the judge. A well deserved red card, but if he didn't see it, he shouldn't have said he did.

What a peculiar way to attack someone though. A header to the chest? Shit is classic, regardless of the final outcome.

The first penalty was probably horseshit, but there was one later on in the game that got overlooked probably b/c of it. Man it was Zidane's last game, if it was racial why wait till the end to complain, put that fucker in his place on the field. Zidane is Algerian, North African, basically light shaded black people, think Egyptian (no KKK). It was going to go to Pk's anyways the way Italy was stalling, and Trezeguet or Barthez was gonna fuck it up regardless.

I forgot about that other play, but who knows what happens.

Zidane should have waited to get at the guy. He pretty much just did exactly what the Italian player wanted and then Italy wins the cup. I'm not saying don't head butt the guy, just wait 15 minutes.

But yeah, Barthez was completely outmatched in the pks. Gotta give Italy credit for getting that big ass monkey off of their back. England's next...

unfortunately imo, italy proved one thing this world cup. defense wins. and possession doesn't hurt either. the argentinians had ridiculous skill up front, as did the germans, as did spain, as did brasil, and all their asses got shut down by superior defense. i'd rather watch argentina/spain/brasil play any day than italy, but that flashy flair shit just doesn't work. brasil in '02 might have been the best team to win in the last generation, they had a great offense, but won with a highly underrated defense. italy and france probably had the 2 best back lines and defensive midfields in the tournament. they just sat back, packed it in, took what the other teams would offer, then countered, stayed patient and tired the other team out, kept some possession, and had some timely goals. i just hope we don't see this continued trend towards the 451, shit works, but it's mad boring. everyone says brasil is always playing with 11 forwards, put a defender or 2 in there and damn, they'd win every time.

Man, what a final....

I generally think Zidane has lost it. Don't know if its been mentioned, but the reason he came out of international retirement is because he claims 'ghosts of historic French figures' came to him in a vision and told him he must play in the 2006 World Cup tournament. Please someone correct me if thats bollocks, but i definately read that recently.

That aside, real shame to bow out of your career in disgrace, i doubt he'll ever come clean on what was said. I notice Matterazi has refused to comment, he obviously said something nasty, not done himself any favours i think.

Zidane = :jaz:

For real. I'm 90% positive that if Domenech had the balls to scrap his fucking 4-5-1 earlier and put inTrezeguet around the 60th minute mark, I would have had the pleasure of seeing a crying Totti after the game.

Worst post ever.

Especially the last sentence. Trezeguet was gonna fuck it up regardless? What? Have you ever even seen Trezeguet play, before this match?

in the end, I think Germany may have been the best team. it would have been nice to see them against France in the final. I was very unimpressed with Italy the whole tournament, although Cannavaro was pretty great.

In hindsight, not having Frings looked pretty detrimental in the loss to Italy.

No, I'm saying Trezegue was probably going to take a PK kick whether Zidane was out or in. NOthing against him as a player.

yeah, some nasty shit but the worst part is this comment:
"Looks like the raging arab(ZIZOU as you homo's like to call him) couldnt take it! He lost the world cup for them, and you ppl say he hurt MATERAZZI? Did you see him hurt when he was holding up the cup? No I dont think so. "ZIZOU" will be crying. Also Materazzi scored the goal against the African Nations(France) WANKERS!!!! GO AND STICK SOME BAGUETTES UP YOUR ARSE! and Henry the little cheat, the diving ape can fuck off. ITALIA WORLD CUP 2006 WINNERS! And theres nothing you can do about it!"
