I gotta say that Italy also got screwed with that red card at the end of the first half, they were dominating up until that point. It was only a matter of time before they scored if they still had all their men.
But yeah the refs have made a lot of terrible calls in this tournament. They should implement an instant replay system after this World Cup.

I can't front, Italy didn't deserve a red card for that challenge, and that did completely change the momentum of the game. That being said, I don't think we were being dominated prior to that point. We were definitely the weaker side, but I think it's plausible that we could have held on to a 0-0 scoreline and taken it to penaltys.ChristPuncher wrote:I gotta say that Italy also got screwed with that red card at the end of the first half, they were dominating up until that point. But yeah, whatever..... fucken shithouse way to lose though.

Agreed. It wasn't as much a dive as it was the Italian's own fault. I would've let that slide if I was the ref. Especially in the 93rd minute.Moolah wrote:The contact was completely incidental. Defender was already on the ground and the Italian basically tripped over him.

I have no idea what the hell your manager was thinking by keeping Van Nistelrooy on the bench during that game. You need to say fuck a system and get your best goal scorer in the game.Ap wrote:so we (Netherlands) are out of the tournament. a well deserved victory for Portugal. they were far more threatening (when it was still 11 against 11, before mayhem started). we had most possession of the ball but lack creativity from the back and our midfield is too weak. van Nistelrooij and Kuijt are strikers for a 4-4-2 system and dont have enough skills ("total football" skills) to play well in a 4-3-3 system. Robben en van Persie are good but both need to learn a lot. yesterday we were unlucky not to score a goal, but overall we didnt deserve to be in the quarter final. we havent played a good game since Netherlands - Czech republic at Euro 2004 but this is a good experience for our young players.
Germany indeed plays more attractive than we do at the moment. but van Basten tries to play attractive, attacking football we just dont have the quality players to do it. with Netherlands under 21 winning the European title a month ago the future looks bright tho'.
And Australia got fucked. That was a lousy call.

sucks for the Aussies but refs will call that 100/100 times. like everyone, can't believe all the fucking cards, but from the looks of today, the refs are taking it a little easier now, esp the ukraine v. swiss game. if you're a ref and don't act all high and mighty like it's you v. the players, blowing your whistle at any offense, people will dive less, respect you more, and the game will flow. how do they not get it??
i can't remember the last time so many traditional powers have gotten so far. arg v. germany, england v. portugal, italy v. ukraine (blah), brasil v. spain/france, damn!

The Italians have such an easy path. First Australia (sorry Moolah), now they get Ukraine. If they played almost anyone else they're already on the plane home.
Didn't see many comments on England's win. Ashley Cole saved the day with his great block of Ecuador's open chance on goal.
David Beckham has come to play this World Cup. A fantastic free kick, and has helped set up a few other goals. It was great to hear Marcelo Balboa talk trash about Beckham on some "he needs to do more" shit only to say "That's why he's the best in the world." after the goal. Dick rider. Then Beckham pukes on the field and plays on. I gained a lot more respect for him on Sunday, and now understand why he's the captain.
England is creating chances but not finishing, but I'm confident that they will start to put more shots in the back of the net. Lampard in particular continues to drive me crazy with all his chances. If he can only put a couple of them away I think England has a legitimate chance to take the whole thing.
Can't wait for the mini World Cup Final on Friday in Germany vs. Argentina. The two best teams in the tourney so far. Should be an amazing game.
France vs. Spain should be great, I'm taking off early at work tomorrow. Can Ghana shock the world? I might be tempted to put down a few bucks on them tomorrow as I'm sure the odds are fantastic.

Despite their easy schedule, they probably would have been on the plane home had the ref blown the whistle for extra time rather than for that penalty.jamrage wrote:The Italians have such an easy path. i think they're playing w/o essien who would give them a much better chance. but since brasil's coach is a puss, he'll field the game 1and2 starters who are solid but lack energy and creativity in the middle of the field (start juninho!). but, i still don't see any way ghana can win this unless ronaldo eats the rest of his team [colbert report].jamrage wrote:Can Ghana shock the world? Here's what really happened after the goal was scored.the Wiper wrote:and what's with them showing sydney, and it seemed like they were getting the wrong game feed, because when the penalty kick went in, they were celebrating...

I agree that the ref is to blame, not so much the player. I don't agree that he couldn't help but fall.binary wrote:The blame shouldn't go to the italian player really, it should go on the ref. The italian player just made a really good move and was going after the ball, he really couldn't help but fall, ANYONE would've done the same. The refs could've let it go though.
I think he had the option of making a bit of effort to avoid the player (jump a little), or to take the easy way out and just fall over him. I believe their was a choice involved though. If you watch the replay, the aussie defender made no contact with his feet, and then tried to duck his body out of the way, and the italian guy just kind of steps into him.
It really was a very innocent challenge, and I think the type of challenge that should, and does go unpenalised most of the time.

as a defender you're taught not to slide in the penality area unless absolutely necessary. Also, even if the italian dude made a choice, ANYONE would've done the same in that situation...the italians were down a man (by way of bs), tired as fuck, weren't getting anything done, Luca was on the bench, it was a smart move at a rather desperate time. But yeah, it's pretty much all on the ref, you let shit like that go in that situation.Moolah wrote:I agree that the ref is to blame, not so much the player.
