i figured i was most likely going to get a spot, but its all about the knock out punch. So here is:

Dr Dre - U Got Ganked

-In the mid to late 80's Dre was kind of inbetween his World class wreckin crew fame and his NWA mega-fame he earned quite a name for himself as a club (and radio) dj in L.A. In his capacity as a local star dj he found himself lending a hand to friend and local record store owner Steve Yano* by mixing down some tapes of the latest hit records so Steve could play the tapes at the local swap meet (rodium) and people would get excited about the records and purchase them right then and there.

This started in about 84/85 with the mixes being equal parts hip hop and electro, but as the years went on (i think he made tapes till about 89) tastes changed and so did the content of the mixes. U got ganked seems to have come out around '88 and features classics from Big Daddy Kane, Will Smith, MC Lyte and Too Short. The highlite here has to be Dre's own brief freestyle over I'm Still #1.

One of my favorite things about Dre mixes is that as you get closer to 89 you get to hear more and more freestyles by the members of NWA. Unfortunatley I kind of picked this one at random and it doesnt have too much in the way of freestyles but its still tight as hell.

*it bears mentioning that many of the tapes where mixed with assistance from Tony A

up-file doesn't seem to work for some people (including myself). The download link just never appears. I've heard that people have more success with Firefox, but that doesn't work for me either.

MP3x is going to require WEEKLY, more likely atleast BI-WEEKLY contributions, so if any of you can't commit to that, please let it be known now.

Sure, but will be frequent the site enough? No question he has the music to hook up, but my concern is a lot of these guys were heavy hitters this week and may drift off as time goes by.

I have a music collection that would put 90% of the people on this board to shame. I would like to share some of it. I don't quite understand why you think my blog would make me unable to do so.

Eclipse - Wild Pitch Blends

Code: Select all

http://www.sendspace.com/file/jgxy4w
One hour promotional mixtape of the best of the wild pitch catalog. This came out shortly before the label folded, so a lot of these acts - Total Pack, Foul Play, Nick Swing & Bamboo - never even dropped a single, with wild pitch or elsewhere. Total Pack later recorded for Dolo as Cestyle/The Korp. TND went on to become All Natural.

Side A
1. Latee - No Tricks
2. Gang Starr - Positivity
3. OC - Time's Up
4. Foul Play - Black Clouds
5. Third Eye - Put Ya Boots On
6. The Coup - Santa Rita Weekend
7. Nick Swing & Bamboo - Out The Picture
8. OC - O-Zone
9. Total Pack - Battle Hymn
10. Chill Rob G - Future Shock

Side B
1. Main Source - Live At The Barbecue
2. Jamose - The Rhythmologist
3. TND - Hip Hop Is Back
4. The Coup - Fat Cats, Bigger Fish
5. N-Tyce - Sure Ya Right
6. OC - Born 2 Live
7. Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth - Bad Mutha
8. Total Pack - What's The Deal
9. Large Professor - Gitofdat Bullshit
