What's your favourite Redman album?

Post by eastvandemolition »

Here's a list of his prominent solo albums. Which is your favourite? Which do you think is the best overall?

Whut? Thee Album (1992)
Dare Iz A Dark Side (1994)
Muddy Waters (1996)
Doc's The Name 2000 (1998)
Malpractice (2001)

I'm pretty sure that the results will be divided among the first three, but I'm interested to see if there are some votes for the other two, which are also very solid albums. It's Redman, what the fuck do you expect - he's got one of the most consistent catalogues of all time, IMO.

My vote will go to "Dare iz...". Its a solid, cohesive disc that feels - more than most rap cds - like an actual ALBUM. All but a few songs share dark production. Is this a result of having only 2 producers (Reggie Noble AKA Redman and Erick Sermon) ? Probably.

Redman raps like a madman on this disc. I feel it is a weirder but more interesting emceeing performance than "Whut?..." Comparing "Dare iz..." to his debut, well "Whut?..." has some of Red's most classic tracks (Time 4 Sum Aksion) , but it lacks some of the depth of his other two records, I think.

"Dare iz..." is not a great party record, but its a treat to bring it out every now and then and listen to it the whole way through.

A classic, easily.

definitely dare iz a darkside. whut? is without question better than muddy waters, and i never heard malpractice. i don't own docs the name, but i'd place it fourth.

i really like muddy waters, but the best argument for the first two albums is that they are more cohesive, since there are less producers involved. i'll go with muddy waters tho, just because up until that point imo, he was still improving with each album as an mc.

the last two i honestly do not like. doc's da name had a few rele good tracks but was a serious step down, and malpractice was just flat out weak.

Dare Iz A Dark Side (1994)
Muddy Waters (1996)
Whut? Thee Album (1992)
Malpractice (2001)
Doc's The Name 2000 (1998)

I THINK..

Blackout w/meth would rank second or first.

I made this a poll because it's a great thread.

Personally, I'd take Dare because of the overall quality. Whut has better tracks though. Muddy Waters is really equally as good and on some days better.

The other two were cool when they dropped, but I have no desire to check them out where as I listen to Dare every few months.

dare iz a darkside is so...different from his other shit, which is a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. i like his first a little better i think, but i need to listen to them all again, and see how i feel about this now.

apparently a lot of people on :phila: feel it's his best album, tho.

Redman is my favorite MC.

To me, this is a toss up b/w Muddy Waters and Dare Iz a Darkside.

Personally, I prefer Muddy Waters. I feel it is up and down a more complete record.

for me it's easily DIADS.

it's the first redman album i heard, got it in eight grade. loved it then, love it now. it's easy to listen to that album now and go "when did emcees stop having fun?"

it's such a grimey, random, hilarious, "i-don't-fucking-care-what-you-think" type of album. i just love it.

none of the other supaman lovas hold their own against part two either.

Yeah its such a fun album to listen to. Alot of albums coming out nowadays should take a hint from funk doc and make their albums more care free and fun.

Well you gotta love part 3... Especially the beat.

I think Darkside is the BEST one, but Personal Favorite? I think I'd have to say Doc's the Name. There were some really good tracks on there. Some of my favorite Redman tracks ever.

I'd have to go with Dare Iz A Darkside...though, I would have picked Doc's The Name...but, my favorite track on there wasn't by Redman...I'm thinking Track #7, I think!!
