That article seems kinda out of date - their top ranking desktop HD is 5200rpm, 2MB buffer with no FW800 interface. And those Maxtor things with the 'one touch backup button' always seemed gimmicky to me (and I'm pretty sure that function is Windows only).
Between home and work, I've used a few LaCie external HDs (and countless other LaCie products over the years - they're big in the Mac world), and the only problems I've had have been with a recent 1Tb 'Bigger Disk Extreme'. I'd recommend them.

Thanks for the list! I would think picking one up with lots of space is the move.Kalel wrote:i dunno what a "tage" isbut if your lookin for a good external hard drive PCWorld.com did a round up of the Top 10 External Hard Drives [according to them]. check it out here.
I have a newer Maxtor OneTouch... 300 GB, 16MB buffer, 7200 RPM. I'm not sure what speed the Firewire interface is, but it works. I bought it in Japan for 26 000 yen, which I guess would be around $250 US. The one-buton backup is pretty much a gimmick and is definitely Windows only, but you don't need to use. You don't even need to install any software to use it. Just plug it in and it works. I use it on both my Mac and my Linux machine. My dad got the same drive and it works the same with Windows, no software installation necessary (if you don't want the one button backup deal)De Seven Free wrote:That article seems kinda out of date - their top ranking desktop HD is 5200rpm, 2MB buffer with no FW800 interface. ive always read about just making your own external drive.
you buy the internal drive and then get the housing for it with the IDE to usb converter[not quite sure if thats the correct term] and then BLAOW!!!
$90 120GB drive with $30 housing external hdd.
