I need a crash course on Modded X-Box's PLEASE!

Post by neoteric »

yo, i just got a modded xbox and i have a bunch of questions!

First off, emulators
it seems like my mod has some built in emulators. should i upgrade them? it seems to have all the different systems. I dont know how to install programs on the xbox, so any tips would be helpful

is there a place online i can get a huge package of ROMS, id like SNES, n64, Mame, Nintendo etc, allll of em
do i have to find them seperately?

now for XBMC, is there a codec pack for it, id like to have all the codecs installed, to play video formats etc, but i have no idea how to do this

also my box has ftp capability built into it, and im not sure how to use it. what kind of config do you have to do? ive tried ftping to 192.168.0.5 but its not reply. is there use accounts you have to set up??

id really like to see the xbox as a shared drive or something for drag and drop if thats possible

know of any:
good torrent sites for downloading games?
good game rental through the mail services?

shit i dont even know what else im missing out on, fill me in on all the crazy shit i can do with this

im off to rent and rip some games :gyeah:

Get a torrent for XBMC. There are a lot of great fully customized, fully functional builds out there. I used to build my own from source weekly, but it really wasn't worth it.

You can find huge rom packages on USENET or look for torrents. Usenet will definitely have that shit readily available, but you might have to do some searching with torrents.

You need to find out what ip address your xbox is using. Your dashboard should have this information available. The username and password is probably xbox/xbox.

There are at least 3 different DVD drives that one can have in their Xbox, no? Are all capable of backing up games, or is the difference simply disc format compatibility?

This shit is difficult. Just soft-modded my Xbox last night. Installed a PIMPED release of XBMC as well by way of FTP. Tried making XBMC my dash, but when I rebooted I got error 13. I've pretty much given up and have settled on UnleashX for my dash.

I'd like to be able to stream media from my PC and take advantage of these scripts that allow the Xbox to DL info from the web and whatnot. Problem is I'm not really understanding how to configure my xbox or my PC for this. I tried doing SMB sharing but couldn't get it to work. I'm looking at ccXStreamGUI now, but I still don't get what I'm supposed to edit the bookmark paths to in the xbmc.xml file.

I've been frequenting Xbox scene and the official XBMC site for info, but still no luck.

If you didn't already know, there are Xbox specific emulators. As for installing, just FTP the files to the appropriate directory. I use UnleashX and had to create a folder named 'Emulators' for the link to appear in the right spot in the dash.

Also, I found a nice BT spot that focuses on Xbox goodies. If you'd like an invite, let me know.

And what's going on with GTA? Is there an icon indicating it's on the HD? I'm really new to all this, but if I remember correctly, I had to go through file explorer to locate the default.xbe file. Once I found it and choose it, the game loaded up.

I don't know if this applies to games ripped directly from the Xbox disc drive, but when burning them, apparently you have to use a program to patch the file in order to get around the copyright protection. Games released after...Nov (?) 2003 all have this copywrite protection junk. I might have read something about certain dashes doing this automatically, but I can't be sure.

Here is the default.xbe for GTA SA:

http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2CKC ... ED3JELU11B

as far as sharing playing media files that are on your PC with your XBMC, SMB share is the easies way.

you will need to know a few things first.
1. you need to know the IP address of your computer.to find out. go to RUN type CMD and hit enter. then type

IPCONFIG
hit enter. it will give your IP and gateway.

Make sure that your XBOX has an Ip address on the same network segment as your PC. That is, if your PC's IP is 192.168.1.10 Your Xbox needs to have an IP of 192.168.1.xx xx is any number between 2 and 253. Your gateway on your xbox and your DNS should be the same as the Gateway on your PC.

if you use DHCP on your Xbox you do not have to worry about your xbox IP.

2. you need to know your Username and Password if you are running XP or 2000. if you do not know your password, you should just make a new account for accessing you Media share. to do that right click my computer, go to manage. go to local user and groups. go to users. right click and select new user.

After that, go to the folder that you want to share, right click, select properties, then sharing. select share this folder, and type in a name. short with now spaces is the best practice.
Then hit the Permissions button and hit Add and select your user account that you know the password to, or you newley created account.

then got to setting in XBMC select netork, then SMB share. put in your IP address, username and password. the workgroup is probably "workgroup", unless you chaged it. make sure that you save your settings.

when you go to MY PICTURES or MY VIDEOS, your Share Name should be in the list. THAT IS, if you named you share, MYMEDIA, then when you select My Pictures, MYMEDIA will on the list.

as far as making XBMC the default dash, i do not know because i havent tried it, but i may look into it since ive been using it more.

XBMC SCRIPTS:
Launch Browser is a must. Its Yahoo Launch on your xbox.

TV.Com is pretty cool. its got info on just about any TV shout that has ever been on the air, including video clips.

OOBA
is excellent too. watch comedy central clips, including mencia and chapelle. it also has a history channel section and an adult section which is kinda crappy.

Script Installer v1.0
it is a script that connects to http://www.xbmcscripts.com that allows you to install the scripts

some of the other Scripts for xbmc do not work anymore like iFilm

What did you to to make XBMC your dashboard

I'm just curious because I've never had problems switching default dashboards with the soft-mod

if you want to be able to copy files from the xbox to your PC, make sure that when you create the share that you set the permission to READ and CHANGE. if you do not select CHANGE, you will not be able to write to the PC from the XBOX.

FTP errors are usually caused by the directory has too long of a file name.

what i mean is, if you are copying lets say some emulator roms, there is a good chance that you will receive an error.

for exaple the following file name might be too long so you will receieve an unknown erorr when trying to FTP to the location:

F:\Emulators\Nintendo 64\Roms\The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (Japan) (Hack) (!).zip

I used to have this issue when copying some older versions of XBMC.

There are a couple of things that you can do.

You can rename the individual file before you FTP so that it is not as long.
But if you have many ROMS that have long file names, what you can do is ZIP all of the roms into on archive called like Roms.zip or something and then copy that to your xbox. Unleash X can open and extract zip files. after you copy it you should be able to extract it.

there is also a program called rename xbox or something like that. it will rename multiple files at once for you so that they are XBOX compliant.

it also has the ability to zip multiple files at once. so if you have 150 n64 roms, to save space it is better if they are zipped. most of the emulators will read zip files that contain Roms. that way instead of 2 gigs of N64 roms you only have 1 gig.

C-tools is another great tool that is a must have. it has FTP, ISO extraction and creation, and it allows you to rename titles contained within the default.xbe files. so in my menu, in emulators, i see titles like NES, SNES, GENESIS, PLAYSTATION, N64, GAMEBOY, TURBO GRAPHIX 16.... instead of the stupid emulator name.

Game saves manager is also a must have. it allows you to access you save game files via FTP from your pc. that way you can go to http://www.codejunkies.com/ and download the latest roster updates.
they have rosters for NCAA football and Basketball with all of the names instead of the numbers. and the announcers even say the names somehow?!?i guess they put it in the game without telling anyone

i will upload some tools usefull tools later on
