looping correctly in fruity loops 5

Post by bizzlestiltskin »

hey, I have a quick question. I record my vinyl through cool edit and then go back and figure out what i want to sample. I usually cut the samples into little loops that loop correctly.

the problem is when I open them in Fruityloops, the timing is off big time on a lot of my stuff. In Acid 4.0 it was easy to fix because you could align to waveform to the measures grid; in fruity you only have the sample cut into chunks on the piano roll. Is there a good way for aligning samples so that they loop how they should? Sometimes I'll manually fiddle with the BPM until it loops, but this is really hard/annoying because I have to check the piano roll each time I change the bpm to make sure i'm going in the right direction (higher or lower bpm).

Anyone want to share they techniques?

um, don't use piano roll. use the sampler, and time stretch so it read, 2 or 4 or however long your loop is. also i noticed that samples that are saved at mp3 dont' loop as well as ones that are saved as wav's.

what do you mean by 2 or 4 length loops. I've tried what you mentioned but so far I'm having difficulty making it so the loops don't keep playing on after the measure. What do you do if the loop is longer than the measure?

what do you do when you want to interpolate two loops on top of each other? or what if you just want to use the end of a loop, how do you get to the end? It only lets me play the loop as a whole in the sampler.

i mean bar length. But it all depends on how you have it set up. I have my 'bars' set up as 32 beat length, some have 64, some 16.

for this sample, the length is 2 'bars' long. so i go into the time stretch, adjust til it says 2.

you can either set it up so the sample will cut itself, once it is supposed to play again. basically play the first part over and over again, if that how you want it set up. or you can set the playlist up, so it doesn't play that loop everytime.

you just open up a new sampler, and load the other sample. if thats what you mean. if you just want the end of the loop, the easiest way is just to chop it up in cool edit, til you get what you want. or what you can do is mess with the envelope feature in the effects area.

i think dave just needs to start sampling records as .wavs instead of chopping up mp3s for samples.

how do you get rid of the crackle/static from the record sample? although it's dope sometimes, other times you want a clean sample. say word?

audio plugins. i think soundforge or acid might come with one stock although you can probably download better ones. then you run it just like you would a compressor.

I use the "noise reduction" in Cool Edit Pro. Just use a little bit at a time so you don't over do it.

thanks for all the info, i'll be experimenting next week. I always save my stuff as .wav. I also use the noise reduction thing in cool edit to clean up some records that aren't in great condition. works fairly well, though it makes the sample sound kind of tinny.

who is Dave?

I don't use Fruityloops, but with Reason all I do is EQ it. I fiddle around with the frequency and boost other parts of the sound until I get a full sound without much crackle. it works pretty well

Ok, this is probably the most common problem when people are looping in Fruityloops. Generally before you cut any samples from records, make sure you know what measure you're going to sample the loop. Say four bars, or 2 bars. Also make sure of the time signature. If the sample is in 3/4's time, you're gonna have a hard time looping it in 4/4'ths time unless you chop in some wierd way, and even then, it won't amount to anything. Also take note of the tempo you're sampling at. If you don't have a keen sense of the tempo, you can always run the sample normal in fruityloops without any timestrecthing and use the "tap" feature to tap in the tempo while the loop is playing. I think it's probably an issue of timestretching though. If you're in FL 5, and your sample is loaded up, right click on the "time" nob in the channel settings. If your sample is chopped longer than 8 bars than you are going to have to use the metronome and stretch it out by analogue. That's probably the difficult part in getting that to be on beat. I usually try to chop within 1,2,4 bar measures. Sometimes I'll chop to make the sample fit in, or for other creative purposes.

i cant believe nobody touched on this yet, but...

there's a feature in cooledit that allows you to find out the exact bpm of a given loop. go to the wave edit screen (not the arranging screen) and right click on that shit and go to wave properties at the bottom. then all you gotta do is go to the loop properties (i think??) section and click on find tempo (might have to enter 2, or 4, or 8 or however many bars the sample is into the little box so the program has something to measure it by.) anyways, after yaknow the exact bpm of that ish you can set it up perfect in fl.

do dat shit
