DUAL LAYER DVD BURNING

Post by sneed »

I'm looking for a DUAL LAYER DVD BURNER, EXTERNAL, remember I'm running off a mac here, so mac osx compatibility is key...

LACIE DVD BURNER

how about that one? I'm surprised they are so cheap, I was expecting to fork out $350-500 for one of these...

thanks in advance...

As far as blank media is concerned, $199 for 50 blank dvd-rs??!??!?!

that is C R A Z Y

anyone know if it's coming down in price soon, or another place to get them cheaper?

its likely blu ray (like 100gb storage) will come out before dual layer dvds drop to affordable prices (i think they are like 6.50 each right now)

go to www.rima.com to get your media. i highly suggest tayo yuiden dvds

as far as optical drive brands go, id go with nec, pioneer, or plextor

yeah, I'm wondering if I should hold off on the dual dvd-r thing and wait for blue ray :killacam:

only thing that sucks about blue-ray is the casing is going to make it more expensive than DVD-HD's which are coming out soon...

but the BEST thing about Blueray is that each year in its release they are almost doubling it's capacity...

they've already projected that by 2008 blue ray will be able to hold a whopping, 400 gigs PER DISC...

I also wonder if movie dvds will be released on DVD-HD AND BLUE-RAY and if so, will they have better resolutions?

AKA

will i have to buy everything I already have on DVD?

I would hope the players coming out would be backwards compatible.....

I'll see if I can dig up an article I read discussing the two new mediums, which indicated that while Blu-Ray is getting a lot of backing, HD-DVD is the better format.

One highlight I remembered was that Blu-Ray will be VERY delicate.

Blue-Ray is definately better, I've done my reasearch. Even if it IS very delicate, it has a hard protective casing over it, similar to DVD-RAM, so there's no scratching your shit up...

Regardless, HD-DVD is going to be stuck at a max of 50 gigs per disc, while BLUE-RAY was built to be expanded in upwards to 400 gigs, that my friends, is fucking amazing...

Imagine having a whole season of Seinfeld on one disc, or better yet, maybe a whole series of some shows on one disc?!? that'd be insane

I'll second that, after using a fair amount of different LaCie stuff with Macs over the years, I can't remember having a hardware problem with them.

dual layer dvd writers are cheap enough right now that you might as well pick one up. dont worry about blu ray right now.
you can compress a dual layer dvd onto a single layer without noticeable decrease in quality (assuming you want to burn dvds)

see the ONLY reason I want to fuck with a dual layer dvd burner is because I HATE compressing dvds for the simple fact that it doesn't ALWAYS work correctly and I hate having to compress something like that...

I'd rather have a dual layer dvd burner and just pop it in using Toast Titanium then make a BIT FOR BIT identical copy of a dvd, now THAT is where it's at for me...

i have a stack of 50 dvds here that all burned on the first try. im sure others here can attest to the quality of dvd burners and the copies they produce. it depends on the media as well. but, i mean, the choice is up to you.

anyway, i just saw the price of that lacie and damn, its pretty expensive.
have you thought about an internal dvdr and an enclosure? im pretty sure you can get both for under 100. i guess it depends on how much cash you have as well

I got the dual plextor 16x and also have a mac.... works like a charm thus far and burned a 3 hour dvd with no compression in like 30 minutes ..... dual layer discs are rediculously expensive though and I've only bought 3......

There's no point in having a dual-layer DVD burner right now if you have a single layer one. By the time the media is affordable the burners will be cheaper than they are now. I loved all my friends bragging how they had dual layer burners like 2 years ago and it hasnt done shit for them.

^yea thats true.. theres no point in upgrading
there are some that can be firmware flashed to dual layer, like certain pioneers and necs

well I have a 12 inch powerbook with no DVD writer, so the premise of me getting a single layer DVD External burner made by LaCie for less than $200 is great...and if it's dual layer even better
