The Internet Sorta Ruined Videogames
When I was in elementary school, I used to go to the local Blockbuster with my mom twice a month, and each time I would get to pick out one game. It would take me about 15 minutes to choose each time, and I would carefully consider the game based on box art, screenshots on the back, and anything I might have read in Nintendo Power Magazine.
I ended up enjoying games that probably would not have received great, or even good, ratings on any of the online videogame sites they have these days.
Saddingly, I don't rent games anymore, and I never ever buy a game without consulting ign.com or gamespot. I know I'm missing out on a lot of games that I would probably enjoy if I wasn't such a ratings snob, but I just don't have time to experiment with every game in the store anymore, and I think that is sad.
The internet ruined videogames for me and it is sad.

I have great memories of Blockbuster and video games from when I was a kid. If a game was brand new my mom would call in advance and tell them to hold a copy for me and then she'd drive me over there like Speedracer.
I remember when Ninja Turtles came out I ran into the store to get a copy and turned into the aisle where the game was, just as another kid showed up on the other end. We kind of eyed each other for a second before bursting into a sprint towards the last available copy of Ninja Turtles. I beat that bitch by a mile, I think I made him cry.

i think it's more the fact that game rentals cost so much now...SeaTownBlues wrote:When I was in elementary school, I used to go to the local Blockbuster with my mom twice a month, and each time I would get to pick out one game. if it wasnt 5 fucking dollars for a 3 day rental i might be more inclined to rent games instead of buying them right off the bat.

i'm sure theres a few gems i'm missing by only copping the games that get good/great reviews but there's also a fucking ton of "Deadly Towers" that i don't have to spend 100 hours on. if a game looks interesting, and i read a bad review for it, i'll still decide based on personal taste whether or not it's worth checking out.
from what i've read, i halfway expect "Killer 7" to get hated on but the game's art style looks so fucking ill that i'll cop it even if it gets straight 5/10's.

Edge is the only video game mag I still buy. Their conservative rating system reminds me of when The Source's 5 mic rating system had any genuine crediblity many years ago.
As for the internet ruining games, hardly. I try to download a trailor if available to see a game in action, that speaks louder to me than standing at a video game store judging a game's merits solely on it's box art. Playable demos are still the greatest option available however.

I felt the same way, I was going to support this game pretty much no matter what the scores were. But luckily, Famitsu gave this game something like 9,8,9, and a 10agent b wrote:from what i've read, i halfway expect "Killer 7" to get hated on but the game's art style looks so fucking ill that i'll cop it even if it gets straight 5/10's.
Reviews usually reinforce my choices, but I don't take them as canon law.
