After Kendrick Lamar put a dent in the hip-hop world with his verse on Big Sean’s “Control“, some rappers got around to responding to the Compton native’s rhymes. And thanks to the team at Pigeons & Planes, we all got to find out what Lupe Fiasco and his locked Twitter account thought about the track.
The Chicago rapper wasn’t content with leaving it at that, though, and decided to dish out a full-on reply with “SLR 2″. He throws competitive shots right at Lamar saying he feels sicker than a cruise ship, how he’s rapping like he’s flames, and more braggadocio of that ilk. It’s not bad, it’s just … why did we need that weird “Hitler response” part? I get the joke/nod to those YouTube video edits but, nah.
You can hear Lu’s reply below. Under that is anoter new track, “#DopeFrancis (American Trap)”.

Ortiz is the fucking most boring rapper.
Also, is there a central place we can have the Control discussion, as opposed to flipping between threads and seeing the same shit posted in each of them?
PEACE

Weak as fuck, bro; Joell Ortiz's first line in his diss track is superior to this dude's whole (nh @ "dude's whole") song.
Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
Nah man, this shit goes in. Smooth as fuck and he mocks the whole "nobody is better than Kendrick" shit. I thought it was pretty fucking good. Joell's is a runner up. Worst one I've heard so far is Fred The Godson's response.

Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
I feel like these responses are doomed from the start. Even the good ones are gonna be lost in the inevitable deluge of the shitty ones. The og verse wasn't a diss, so responding to it as a diss automatically makes you look butthurt, especially if you weren't named. And note that not a single person who was actually named did respond, which adds an extra level of desperation and thirst to those that did.
The callouts felt more like a challenge to the people who are supposed to be the best out, implying that they're not going as hard as they should be. Like pretty much every reasonable artist who commented on this pointed out, a better response would be making an album that's better than GKMC. That's how you make a legacy, not by dropping a rushed freestyle diss that's gonna blend in with 100 others just like it.

Just when I start to see the appeal of Mac Miller, he acts like himself again.
Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
Ortiz destroyed KL and I'm much more of KL fan generally.
Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
Disagree with most of this except for the making an album better than GKMC and here's why.drizzle wrote:I feel like these responses are doomed from the start. (1) Its not butt hurt to respond to someone who is not from your resident claiming they are the king of it. C'mon now. If no one would've responded, its like where the fuck is your heart? I say if you feel that you need to respond, then do it. You either get respected for what you did or you fucking fall on your face. Yeah, there's going to be a ton of these coming out of course but we all saw that coming anyway.
(2) The ones that are doomed from the start are the ones that proves that fools aren't putting their best effort into it. So far, Joell Ortiz, Ransom, and Astro have done the damn thing. Lupe should've picked a harder beat but the lyrics were on point. Everyone else has been whatever. Cassidy was cool; consistent as usual but I would've liked it if he was on a different beat. Fred The Godson really didn't do much of anything so in a way, Kendrick proved his point of dudes needing to stepped their bar game up. So in actuality, this goes back to what you were saying with people being known as the best out and they're not coming with it. Its about showing and proving.
Now the album shit I do agree with. And you're right, its about legacy. But in the moment kinda shit, counts for something, too, I feel.

I'm not mad at the responses, but dropping songs called "Kendrick Forgot About Me" and "Say My Name" make you look like a fucking loser. If you weren't mentioned, there's probably a reason for that.
One day in and it's already 'Roxanne's Next Door Neighbor' and 'Parents of Roxanne' status.

I mean there really aren't any rappers in NYC that are better than Kendrick right now though, right? Did he even mention anyone from NYC in the verse other than Rocky?

Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
I'd take Roc Marci or Ka over Kendrick any day but the thought of either reacting to this in any feels laughable. I don't think any relevant/tangibly successful rapper from NY in general said anything about this beyond 'yea motherfuckers need to rap harder'. Only the scrubs, the also-rans and the upstarts took this to heart. Ortiz was the biggest name among them which is telling in itself.blastmaster wrote:I mean there really aren't any rappers in NYC that are better than Kendrick right now though, right? In episode 3 of Biggaveli TV, Max B stands on a stoop and declares "I'm the new king of New York, Max Biggavel'" before cackling.
That claim still stands even if it's on a technicality.

Re: Black Hippy thread (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, etc.)
Debating the merits of some rushed freestyles by a bunch of also-rans looking to capitalise on the aftermath of an insanely overrated verse is pretty pointless.
AZ is 4/4 so far this year but even when Doe Or Die 2 (which looks like being a dope album) finally drops it'll get ignored by people obsessed with the "big names" and whatevers flavour of the month. Be nice if we could get to a point where hype, gossip and "buzz" didnt take precedent over decent music.
