Did I miss something or did Self Induced Illness get very little attention here? It's 40 songs, 2 hours 20 minutes of good shit. Of course, when you put that much material together there'll be some skippable songs and the replay value will be diminished, but there are plenty of really good tracks on here: Got the Fever, What Kind of Life, 7000 Thoughts, Crossroads, Gunslinger, Guidance, the list goes on... You've easily got enough for 2 solid albums.

I know a few of those were already out before this dropped in February. Nevertheless, as it stands right now, this album is tragically underappreciated, at least on Philaflava.

Just cos Action Bronson is killing shit, doesn't mean this album should go largely unheard.

Discuss.

I think it got some hype around the time it dropped but was probably too overwhelming for most people not familiar with him.

Maybe so but a 41-track album with very few duds is something of an accomplishment. The rest of us should at least acknowledge this.

41 tracks of anyone on one album is an accomplishment, unless you're a Canadian rapper.

An accomplishment, I guess. But putting 41 songs on one album is also a dumb move and a pretty easy way to get overlooked. Spread that shit out. I have a hard enough time getting through movies that are that long.

I like Meyhem though and hopes he comes through with something focused soon.

I'm still digesting the entire album myself, but so far there are very few weak cuts. For such a large body of work, it's impressive. Mayhem is a beast.

That's what I'm saying... we can gripe all we want about it being too long to sound focused or cohesive or whatever, but really that's more of a shortcoming on the part of the listener than the artist. People became so accustomed to hearing either 10-song EPs or 25- song "mixtapes" with 10+ features, that something like this can come across as daunting. Nobody says you have to listen to it all at once anyway. Unless you're listening to albums for their marketability, this one deserves much respect.

And before somebody retorts with "Oh but I like to be able to identify a continuous thread going on throughout the record," go ahead and try listening to the whole album. All things considered, it's pretty well sequenced.

Action is one dimensional. Meyhem is 3D.

all his dimensions aren't worth dick if he's not applying or marketing them properly.

for sure, but it's not like he's consistently cranking out 'got the fever' quality tracks that nobody is paying attention to. i want him to do well, i agree that he's more talented and better-rounded than bronson overall, but he's not exactly showing that lately

I like Meyhem. I think his next project is gonna be really dope. I was hearing some of those tracks on his album years ago. His new stuff is really quality, especially if him and Action link on a project.

I'm just not seeng meyhem in the way y'all are. I mean, he's alright and all. I enjoy hearing a verse of his on an action bronson song but as far as listtening to a whole album of his I'm just not there on that.

:ohsh: so lemme get this straight. Bronson is doing an album with eXquire entirely produced by ALC and we're gettin a Buck/Meyhem joint. If both of these stand true and come to fruition then NY Rap will be winning again.

And I do like Meyhem as an artist better than Bronson overall, but "Beautiful Music">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

the fact that he was excluded from this speaks volumes about what he's doing and not doing

No it doesn't because if you are putting together that sort of thing as a publication, you are going to avoid getting two guys who are already in the same crew, unless they were a group.

That said, I am still not convinced on ML. He's definitely pretty solid but there are several NYC cats I just think are much better.

But the idea that his value as an rapper hinges on how well he markets himself is weird to me. Those are two different things.

you've been involved in publishing so i'll take your word as far as the same crew thing. it feels like an odd limitation though, especially in context of ny rap which has always been heavily group/crew oriented. and his absence from that particular grouping is still conspicuous considering how well he matches with the people included.

as far as two different things, you're absolutely correct - pure skillset and the overall ability to present and market that skillset are completely different things. the latter seems far more important in the practical career sense, especially in an environment as saturated with artists as what we have today. it doesn't matter how well you can rap if you can't get people to listen to you.

It is pretty weird he wasn't included in that same convo with the rest of those guys. I forgot about Troy Ave. that Bricks In My Backpack mixtape was dope.

he's in a precarious spot - it would be a shame if he got trapped in the thankless throwback rapper cycle of j-love mixtapes and recycled boombap... but he's also not really a good fit for the trendy rap crowd action is getting deeper and deeper with

he sees the sudden success action has and probably is being told a few things so he goes this route. prob is it won't work. he isn't that kind of rapper and those who like meyham probably won't go for these collabos.

you wouldn't want to see cormega get on a goyte remix.
