Depeche Mode Thread

Post by Masked Terror #1 »

Not sure of we've ever discussed DM here before, but I'm a huge fan.

They have a handful of classic albums, dozens of classic singles and are probably the illest keyboard oriented band of all time.

Yeah, some of the early stuff is pretty fruity, but as they progressed their shit got pretty dark and icy while managing to stay sonically lush at the same time.

I dig Some Great Reward, Music For Masses, Violator, Ultra (It's No Good is incredible) and Playing The Angel a lot.

An ill thing about them is that they can still drop songs that are as good as anything they've ever done. Pain That I'm Used To and Precious stand up to any of their classic shit and they came out 20+ years into their career.

They're also really great live. One of the few arena sized shows that still seems worthwhile to me.

Anyone else down with DM?

ahh! one of my fave bands EVER

dave gahan is in my top 10 favorite voices of all time, any genre.

love "halo" and "clean" from violator

there's a demo version of "precious" that i actually like more than the original.

and i like the fruity stuff. there are some great songs on black celebration.

Sounds crazy to ask but can somebody put together a Best of compilation? I've always liked them but never bought any of their albums.

I dig some of the solo stuff, but I think typically things don't really fire on all cylinders until it's Martin writing and Dave singing. Even then, there's a real distinction between they're merely very good stuff and the truly exceptional stuff.

In a funny way, to me they're like Rush in that regard- their most loved and popular songs tend to be their best. Not true of many bands.

I have liked Depeche Mode for a long time, but it is weird because I don't know much about them, and have never really heard all their albums, or tried to. I think the only albums I have heard in their entirety are Speak and Spell (I have on vinyl), and Violator.

I have been rocking this CD for 10+ years, though:

Useless 4:53
Only When I Lose Myself 4:41

Everything Counts (Live 1988)
I have never really tried to figure out which songs are from which albums, though. What are the best full lengths to start with?

I also have a covers album I found in a dollar bin that is surprisingly good. I don't normally fuck with cover albums, but this has to be the best one I have ever heard. Even the bands I don't usually like, actually sound good. I guess the Depeche Mode songwriting is just so strong, it carries the song by itself, no matter who is playing it. I can upload this if anyone wants it, plus a few other random covers I have from different albums.

14 Gus Gus - Monument 5:21
15 Deftones - To Have And To Hold 2:53
16 Rammstein - Stripped 4:45

Their song writing just always seemed 100% to me, like they would be as popular as the Beatles if they fucked with traditional instruments.

Is it lame to like The Cure infinitely more than DM? Are they even comparable? DM is dope and knowledge of them usually leads to pussy so that's another plus.

Yeah, I'd say I like them both equally.

Never seen the Cure live though. Need to remedy that.

Gloss, that mix is in chronological order. You'll be able to witness a real evolution of their sound.

Depeche Mode and The Cure don't even sound that similar to me, but they do always seem to get brought up in the same conversation.

They are both good in their own way for sure.

The Cure needs it's own thread.

it's funny that i mentioned putting dave gahan in my top favorite voices of all time, cuz i'd put fat bob in the category of voices that grate on me, along with billy corgan, geddy lee (im sorry) and meatloaf.

Big fan. Enjoy the Silence is probably a top ten song for me. Failure's version of it on that covers album is excellent btw.
