Really good raw, occasionally punky, occasionally melodic USBM. The last one was a real favorite of mine and this is a strong follow up.

The song Full Circle is especially epic.

Yeah I'll check your blog for newer shit since I'm somewhat of an old school metal head (Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Dio, etc) and have been wanting to branch out. I've heard that Spiral Architect album, pretty fucking mind blowing.

Just recently started trying to find stuff similar to Maiden (power metal? progressive metal?) and have been discovering a lot of shit I missed out on like Labyrinth, Fates Warning, Blind Guardian, Virgin Steele, Stratovarius, Rhapsody Of Fire, Domine, Kamelot, Vanden Plas, Enchant, etc. and like most of it so far.

Not too much into growly singers so if anyone can recommend something I'd appreciate it. I definitely prefer an old school metal sound (NWOBHM/power/prog/epic) but am open to thrashier/sludgier type shit.

Are you up on Chuck Schuldiner's Control Denied? Just got deluxe remaster/rerelease treatment.

Sounds like you'd dig it from what you posted above.

Christian Mistress and In Solitude are two new bands that do a pretty decent take on the NWOBHM sound without sounding like novelty/nostaligia acts.

if you like the singer on Control Denied I can upload the demo of his band Psycho Scream that never came out. He also sings in Pharaoh, who also play really great and non-derivative classic metal.

Of course, you need to listen to The Lord Weird Slough Feg if you haven't, they are the best traditional metal band in the world now. Start with Traveller.

Helloween is taking a heavy trip again, looks like they want to recreate Dark Ride. Sounds good.

Out of those 3, In Solitude sounded the best to me. But that's going from youtube videos so it's always hard to judge shit that well from vids. Thanks man.

Nah I wasn't really feelin Control Denied but I need to give them some proper listening sessions. I'll check out Pharaoh for sure though.

That Slough Feg album is pretty dope.

That doesn't sound like the Helloween I remember but that was ages ago and I know bands change. That's gotta be a different singer though, right?

The singer in Helloween is Andi Deris, you has been with the band for a while, but he's the third singer, after Kai Hansen and then Michael Kiske, who is the guy you are probably most familiar with.

He still sings by the way, and he still sounds great. Mostly hard rock AOR type stuff though, but still, he sounds great.

this song is very yes homo, but I love it. I have a soft spot for cheesy AOR like journey and asia.

I love Witchcraft and I don't think they are cheesy at all, they do a good tribute to that "proto-metal" sound of the 70s. Their hearts are definitely into it, I mean they started off as a Pentagram tribute band, and no one does that for money or cool retro points, just out of pure love for the sound.

If you want Pentagram stuff in the Witchcraft style then check out the earliest recording from the 70s, I think most of the early demos have been reissued.

They got heavier and more metallic later and are one of the best traditional doom metal bands ever imo. Check out Be Forewarned and work your way backwards if you dig it.

anyone you wants that guitar tone btw, I've studied this, it's not about the guitar or amps, he's usually playing gibsons and they switch amps all the time, sometimes it's marshall, sometimes mesa boogie, I think it's sound city now.

It's all in the boss hyper fuzz fz-2 pedal. it's from the 90s and pretty rare, but that's what give EW that monster tone.

and that pedal is only good for that, try to play anything a wee bit faster and everything falls to shit.

I know Liz Buckingham uses different shit all the time. When I used to go see her old band Sourvein she had Orange and Sunn rigs she would alternate. I guess when parts blew out. Boss pedals should be at every bands practice room. Dude who plays guitar in my band uses a 70s Boss overdrive to this day. His distortion pedal is a custom boutique built joint called a "Great Wall". Hes running a 76 Orange head through a 6x12 orange cab along side a 76 model Hiwatt head through a 6x12 black cab.
The sound is crisp enough not to mudshark the thrashier riffs but its heavy enough to completely hit rock bottom on the sludgier breakdowns.

What gear are you playing with right now DLG?

Liz might play one of those SanaAmp DI pedals too, not sure on that though.

I'm a little weak with the gear recently, but I'm probably gonna score an SVT and an ampeg cab soon.

Right now I have an old Ampeg V-4 and an old Acoustic 2 x 15 cabinet, but I'm trying to get one more, since the V-4 is only 100 watts.

For distortion I use an EBS because it works both for my doom stuff and Draconic, where I need that tight Fear Factory-ish sound. When I'm playing doomy stuff I add one of those electro-harmonix bass balls pedals, really makes it interesting, as long as you don't crank the effects on it and overuse it.

I've got a custom four string that is neck-through, shaped like a Jaguar and has two EMG humbuckers, I also have a Fender 5 string american delux jazz bass and I have an epiphone thunderbird pro V coming my way, because I've heard many people say they are ridiculously good for being only 600 bucks. I might throw EMGs into that if I don't like the Epiphone pickups.

I'm supposed to get a call tomorrow or Monday for this new job I want, and if that comes through I'll probably hit up the old credit card and splurge on a brand new ampeg svt and either a 8 x 10 or 6 x 10 cab. Six might be more practical since I'm not really playing any huge clubs and probably won't be any time soon.
