even most canadians dont know drakes from toronto. i mean he doesn't sound like it on record, and the references he makes to canada are real obscure. is the average listener gonna pick up on the group of seven line?

I dont think anyones disputing that he's gonna blow up, but at the same time doing Speaperboxxx numbers doesnt necessarily equate to great rap music which is what 99% of people on here are interested in (however differently they might define it)

Drake selling alot isnt going to ruin my year - i havent even heard So Far Gone or Best I Ever Had.

So 'for the love of Hip Hop' (as you say above) just accept that its poor, generic, pop shit aimed squarely at the mainstream and thats why alot of people here dont like it. You faggot.

No one is going to be listening to this album in 3 or 4 years - its not Ready To Die, Doggystyle, or even Get Rich Or Die Trying.
well, I think it's pretty good music. he's not revolutionizing the artform, but he's got his lane, and he's flying through it.

there is a need for different kinds of rap. for the mainstream, money world rap that a certain percentage of MCs create, Drake is one of the best doing it right now.

when I want to hear it, I bump 'TML'. when I want to hear guillotine music, I listen to :wutang: .

i'm good.

and i don't think you can predict THAT far into Drake's future. this album will do well. it's got songs on top of songs. DRAKE IS A SMART SONGWRITER. Damn near every one of those album tracks can be a video, and can get burn on the radio. I feel like I know what will work in this shit... and Drake is now fucking ELITE.
Bring Back The Tempo wrote:Bender:

Much respect from a fellow Toronto-ite and Canadian and all but, seriously, you gotta understand why some of the older cats here don't like Drake. His singing his awful (he is nothing like Domino, btw), the dude has a nasally voice, and the rapping ...is nothing brilliant. There is nothing compelling about this guy. He's a 23 yearold dude that grew up in the richest parts of Toronto and has witty lines about fucking stupid hos and his haters. ZZZ? If I wanted to give respect to Toronto rappers, I'd say peace to 9th and Tyranny, Tona, Empire, them cats Arkeologists dudes put out, but Drake? I cannot cosign.

p.s.--

That "Finding your love" video is horrible (WTF would he try to get with a Rudeboy's girl?). And what the hell is with the singing?
It was Maliah's phenomenal ass that made it so hard to resist for Drake. In reality, the video reinforces some negative stereotypes for Jamaicans... but it's a reality that is actually unfolding as we speak, since the U.S. Government is hunting down Dudus Coke, the leader of the Shower Posse, in Kingston, right fucking now. In the video, Drake obviously thought he could fuck the girl and bounce from the island, but he didn't, and got caught up, like he did in real life. "Maybe it was the two guns in my face from the stick up" is some real talk. Its the few little moments of vulnerability that make Drake stand out.

and he should have repped Toronto better on the album, but we have the rest of time to do that. this is a good start.

I was at the Stylus Awards on Monday, and I saw Drake drive up in a Maserati. He rolled into the spot squad deep, and made a buzz. It was a fun event, and when he won his award for 'Best I Ever Had', he went up and made a great speech about how he represents Toronto everywhere he goes. Drake participates in the scene around here, and he's carving out a new spot in history. This hasn't happened yet, a Canadian rap superstar on the level of America's. Drake is trailblazing here, even if he's not changing the art of rhyme with his album (even though he has done serious rap work otherwise). I think he represents Canada well. I don't wave a fucking Canadian flag everywhere I go either, we don't have America's relentless patriotism. We still are making our history happen.

Sure, "Find Your Love" isn't that great, one of the worst songs on the album. But still, this guy has made the rest of the world look North. When the other singles drop... boo-yaa.

other Toronto MCs are going to get shine.
we are the new blood of hip hop.

mark my words. doubt them if you want, its your choice.
then watch and listen to what happens.
in love,

I don't know how to say this to you, so I'm going to be very clear. Two things:

1. Drake "winning" is going to mean nothing for your career, or the careers of anyone else in Toronto or Canada that isn't already on tour or affiliated with Drake in some way.

2. I know this is M2C and we're all super-knowledgeable rap fans who read blogs and other gay stuff like that; but in the real world where the other 99.9% of people exist, nobody knows that Drake is Canadian. Every single person I know has heard of Drake at this point, and I can say absolutely that no one has any idea he's from Canada. Even the people who are really into his music (mildly retarded mid-20s trendslut females) don't know this. Maybe that's their ignorance, but maybe Drake isn't exactly heralding his nationality the way you think he is.
so this is your asshole's opinion. vaguely intriguing.

It's pretty hilarious how hard mindbender is riding for a dude who makes the soundtracks for 15 year old girls slumber parties.

there are criticisms I do make of Drake, not that any of you debate team champions are noticing them.

I reiterate:
dude can't write a hook without singing.
the beats he chose are mostly pillow soft, even if they are lush.
he doesn't represent Toronto enough on this landmark event album.
the Swizz Beats/T.I. song is corny
Lil Wayne's verse on 'Miss Me' is absolute shit, way too long, and basically ruins Drake's third single, which makes Drake 0-for-3 for singles.
the Drake/Jay-Z song underwhelms me, and isn't as good as it should be.

besides that, I like this album, and know it's gonna go platinum in 2010.

love,

I see him around here much more than I expect. He represents enough. I have no hate for the dude.

There are a lot worse people in hip hop, if you wanna start judging people like that. I try to have a balanced opinion about everyone. Nobody's perfect. And if they were, someone would still think they suck

Drake is only going to improve as both a singer and a rapper, and get more successful as a pop star. He's 24 years old, doing this. Plus he acts. Eminem only did one '8 Mile'. Wheelchair Jimmy could do crazy things if he got real ambitious.

He should drop a mixtape of raw shit this summer and really do right and kill everything

I DO think Aubrey went a tad too far saying "I'm the Osirus of this shit right now" :bunk: / :wutang: on "Show Me A Good Time", but rap blasphemy is par for the course in 2010, and at least Drake is schooling some of these know-not motherfuckers on Wu-Tang, even if they don't know that Drake is referring to the song C.R.E.A.M.

'Jupiter' is somewhat of a companion piece to 'Thank Me Later'.

I'm not making the parallel that you are. I'm referring to the line before the Osirus mention, when Drake says: "what we doing right now this our dream/ Wu Tang Clan niggas want that cream"

I know there's gonna be a lot of people who buy Drake's album and don't know who Wu-Tang is, nor know what the cream reference means.
