When did Timbaland go from an excellent producer who makes good club-bangers to an all-time great?

I didn't get that memo.

What's the criteria? Influence? Personal preference? Most classic songs produced?

Personal preference is the only criteria I can imagine wouldn't cause a massive argument. My list in no order:

Premo
Pete Rock
Dilla
Madlib
9th Wonder

Who said we didn't want a massive argument?

P.S. Terrible list.

Kimani, I'll talk to my ears about it and see what I can do. I'll tell them how you feel, ok?

Start the argument then, make a list.

Dr. Dre
Premier
Pete Rock
Bomb Squad/Shocklee
Erick Sermon

Shouts to Dewgarde Bros., Muggs, Mo Bee, Buckwild, RZA, Jay Dilla
I think Extra P is as overrated by backpackers as Timbaland is by radio cats.

Marley Marl
Pete Rock
DJ Premier
Large Professor
Prince Paul

Although I'd consider switching Paul with Rza, Bomb Squad, Showbiz, Buckwild or Beatnuts on any given day.

cant believe the thread got this far before someone mentioned Marley Marl!

Dre, Marley Marl, Primo, Bomb Squad and an interchangeable 5th depending on the weather.

Primo, Pete Rock, RZA, Dilla, Madlib
criterias: versatilty, ratio quality/quantity, originality, influence/acknowledgement by peers and personal preference
these 5 guys are pretty much all I like in Hip Hop. pretty much because I also love dark and eerie hip hop beats but I couldn't squeeze in guys like Muggs, El-P or Blueprint. others who fall short are Organized Noize, Dre/Quik/Battlecat, Large Pro, Godfather Don, Beatminerz, Buckwild, K-Def, Easy Mo Bee, ?uestlove, Prince Paul. Marley Marl should be #1 if the sole criteria was influence though

no such thing as a top five, but maybe a top ten; and this top ten would not include timbaland.

I knew before opening the thread that I was gonna not agree on something. But Timbaland?!
But I'll give credit to people for trying. I can't do it. No way.
We're talking different eras, different catalogs...
And when it comes down to it, usually, everyone is just gonna list their favorites.
That's the problem with lists, nobody can ever agree because everyone has a different taste.

I can't even list my top 5 favorites. Like godmc said, maybe 10.

yeah, but Timbo? wow. NO.

Pete Rock and Dilla (I don't like either) had more influence on them.

But I would like to add Shock G... because that homie was doing all the sample splicing WAAAAY before anyone else.... He influenced hiphop with his Humpty breakbeat, even Dre used it for Deep Cover...

My personal top 5:

DJ Premier
Dr. Dre
Pete Rock
Marley Marl

Prince Paul/RZA/Dilla/Large Pro/Buckwild/(maybe Havoc) for the 5th slot.

Also props to Just Blaze and Kanye West (pre-faggot era), 2 of the best 'new' producers.

Are you fuckin INSANE?!! Timbaland??? *shaking head*

Any list without MARLEY MARL is invalid, period!

I can really only do a Top 3... Marley Marl, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier. #'s 4 and 5 are just too damn hard to pick cuz it could be a toss up between like 10 different producers.

As for Dr. Dre, he has a TEAM of producers who contribute and then Dre tweaks this or that and then stamps his name on it. Kinda lame if you ask me. I mean, Dre is a genius, but the whole team of producers thing kinda just takes away from his so-called greatness.
