depending on what that farm looks like, i might take you up in that bet.Philaflava wrote:I swear I'd bet the farm there is a rapper on this board who has more money than all parities involved in Slaugherhouse. Foreal.
i bet royce is sitting good in the money area.
i feel pretty feminine making a statement about another man's money.

i thought he wrote "the message" for sure. i know most of the shit he wrote was axed after his manager started yapping all over the place but i thought for sure that "the message" got used. maybe i'm wrong though, i never owned the album so i can't look at the liner notes to verify.Philaflava wrote:I don't think Royce saw a penny from Chronic 2001. None of his tracks were used and he didn't have any writing credit on the album to my knowledge.
either way, i wonder if royce ever looks back and regrets not dropping his manager and rolling with em and dre instead of staying with said manager. pretty fuckin stupid regardless of how loyal he is to you. that's one of those things that i'm mad about due to it leading to us never hearing royce and em drop a bad meets evil lp.

sure I am out of my mind, but I'm not a fool. :cookiecookie:maclethalcuntfucker wrote:I'm sure Royce isn't hurting. He wrote on the Chronic 2001, and probably has some sort of point on the first Eminem LP. Depends on how he spends his money though.
I very highly doubt that Royce got $1,000,000 for a signing bonus.
Eminem gave 50 Cent $1 million signing bonus. But he had full faith in Dr. Dre and 50 Cent releasing a diamond album.
Tommy Boy didn't give Royce no million dollars. You outta your mind?
Answer: yes.
maybe they didn't offer Royce that much in the beginning, but it's not that Royce could not have -negotiated- a million dollars back then. Eminem was the biggest star in the world. Royce was the only guy rolling with Em like that, even before D-12 came out.
this isn't the only place I heard this, but here's something bout Royce talkin million dollar deals.
I been a fan of Royce since he said "whippin human ass/ throwing bows, cracking jaws with my fists wrapped in gauze, dipped in glue and glass". I read lots of interviews and know my Nickel Nine sheeeit

ML: I wanted to ask you the whole Rock City situation, your first album with the majors and all the delays it suffered from. What was that whole experience like, looking back a few years now?
R: It was a learning experience to the 10th power, itגs the only way youגre going to learn anything in this business. Especially if you come from a market or a regent where no one knows really about the business, because the business hasnגt been there for along time - you know since the Motown Era. Like the record industry, as we know it, exists in L.A., New York and Atlanta and a little bit of Miami. You know its like; I dove in head first into it with a bunch of peopleג¦with a few people who didnגt know anything about it either. So you know everything I learned from it, I learned just from making mistakes. I figure if I get a record deal - I made it. You know and thatגs not the case, you got to be somewhere thereגs a perfect fit for you. I can go get a record deal right now with no problem; itגs not about the money. Itגs not about saying, גOh I gotta million dollar record dealג and nothing like that. Itגs about going somewhere where the companyגs sees the vision that you see, and you guys can collaborate and it can be a perfect fit ג and yגall can make money together. You canגt come to the table with ideas and they got different ideas and everybody thinks they know the direction Royce needs to go, and you know - itגs a disaster. And thatגs pretty much the situation that I found myself in, in the past. Because I can go so many different directions everybody likes a certain kind of Royce. You knowג¦גYou should make radio recordsג and itגs like, גAw, no you should do all underground shitג or גYou should just spitג, everybody thinks they know all the answers. You know at the end of the day it only hurts me when it doesnגt work. So itגs just about me doing what Iגm comfortable with and the label being comfortable what I see, and we go on from there.
ML: Is there a single thing from the whole experience of putting out Rock City that you would change?
R: Not a single thing.
You're in Heaven right now, God.

Some cats here are so naive it's ridiculous..
1st: Royce definitely has a nice chunk of change, who knows, or better yet, who the fuck cares, how much that chunk is.
2nd: I HIGHLY doubt he got 1mil advance from Tommy Boy at that time, but I guess it isn't impossible. But the ONLY reason they would give an advance that large, is if they were near certain he could provide them enough value to recoup all of it plus MUCH more. I see Mindbender keeps trying to argue that Eminem was the biggest star at that time, blah blah blah, and Royce with the only guest on SSLP, blah blah blah, so what?? That means nothing really. I find it hard to believe that TB would base this decision on a single guest appearance, regardless of how good it was. It would be possible if there was an large amount of hype based on that appearance, a la Quan on God's Son, but even so, not likely.
3rd: I find it funny to see so many people dissing Diddy about how bad he treated his artists, blah blah, stealing their money, blah blah, charging them, blah, forcing them to put his cars in the videos, blah blah. It's called business, and that's what this fucking is! He didn't "FORCE" them to do ANYTHING! They signed a fucking contract, and it's their responsibility to hire a lawyer and/or accountant who can explain all the details of it to them, upon which they can then base their decision. If they didn't do that, they're fucking retards, seriously. Diddy does NOT have the power to force them into putting him, or his cars, into their videos unless it was in the contract. Although I DO believe that he suggested it, and it was most likely a good suggestion. If there is one thing he knows, it's how to get attention and make things hot, this is was he does for his artists, but it's their responsibility to get paid for it, hence negotiating a good contract. Saying something like "Don't sign with Diddy, you'll lose all your money" is ridiculous. Mindbender in particular, do you think that if any good business minded individual, let's take Donald Trump for instance, were negotiating a deal with Diddy they would end up being screwed out of their money?
The answer is a big fucking NO!!
The key here, and really in this whole rap game, is rappers need to start thinking more about their business/money/success instead of thinking this is some game of hand holding. Diddy/Dre/Suge/any other producer/manager/label head is NOT going to care about how much money you make as a rapper, they aren't your god damn mommy.
Bottom line: Stay true to your art, but always keep in mind that this is a business, and treat it at such, then you will be fine. No one will "screw" you out of your money...

To be fair, in Detroit he's a pretty big deal. He's probably second only to Eminem.BusinessMan wrote:KritiKal wrote:Diddy called me to write it when he needed rotation

yo, don't blame me for the insanity of the rap game.
and obviously NOW, Diddy is a red flag for any new artist getting with him. But he fucked over artists in the prime of Bad Boy (1994->1998) and its decline. I posted an article where Mark Curry claims Biggie Smalls was selling 'Ready to Die' out the trunk for spending money. That's just wrong.
Jadakiss, Sheek and Styles P spent almost a decade trying to get their publishing back, and trying to get Diddy's paper gangster gat out of their mouth. Obviously now, people know better... but it's not like Diddy doesn't have a long list of people he screwed over in one way or another, through various ways and means. Don't blame me, I didn't make it up.
and maybe Royce just had a million dollar budget for his album instead of a million dollar signing bonus, I dunno. But I did post the article where he says out his own mouth something to the effect of a "million dollar record deal".
the Nas/Quan parallel doesn't equate, 'Streets Disciple' wasn't that big an album at all. The Nas/AZ parallel equates better, cause AZ was the only guest on 'Illmatic'. And he parlayed that into a deal with EMI, still. It wasn't a million, but whatever... 'Illmatic' wasn't even huge back then anyways, and never came close to the mainstream popularity of the 'Slim Shady LP'.
hoppity, peep that Mark Curry book where he breaks down how Diddy used to scam the artists. Bottom of Page 4: http://www.markcurrybook.com/Page_3-4.htm
& :jayz:
really, the point is: Royce is dope, but should not sign to Bad Boy just cause he's indie. He's waaay better off just ghostwriting for Diddy's upcoming T-Pain-tinged electro hop album and building his buzz until Def Jam picks him up or something (maybe Eminem will make peace and sign Royce to Shady Records. Its not like Cashis or Bobby Creekwater is gonna blow up, and Obie Trice is now gone... who knows though.
)
f'real: I'm a fan of Sean Combs as an entity in hip hop culture... but that don't mean he is an angel.
rap is outta control

im not saying puffs practices arent from the old school record industry finger trap ideal, but as a dude who has been signed to unfavorable deals in the past as well as great ones part of me rolls my eyes at cats who sign deals and dont read the fine print. no one can take your pub without you consenting. no one can set up a deal structure without you consenting first.
now of course rookies get manipulated all the time due to being green, hungry and uneducated but even with the lox debacle i couldnt kind of help thinking those dudes were out of pocket. you dont sign a deal, make shit loads of dough in advances, spend it and then after a few years realize oh shit the deal i signed isnt completely favorable to me I'M TAKING THIS PUBLIC! to me its just them taking their stupidity public.
i would be very ashamed to admit publicly "i didnt know puff had %50 of my pub". only to have puff then produce contracts signed and checks cashed. especially since a lot of the cats that get caught out like that project an image of being hustlers and business men.
but hey thats just me. i guess im just still surprised when artists dont know the basic fundamentals of what NOT to sign away these days.
that being said puff does come off as a scumbag of the highest order. but i felt that way ever since the citi college debacle. for people that remember that shit puff is actually considered a murderer to many.

^^ yeah, I agree... the Lox looked real ignorant, pretty foolish, and not-gangsta at all, when they revealed how they got played for their publishing, in the beginning. there was sympathy for them, but also some "either you or your lawyers got caught with their pants down" shit and the responsibility for your career and success always still falls on you. they seemed more focused on the image than the truth, and when the truth came out, it really tarnished their image... everyone's image, actually.
but hey, I thought Diddy was beyond trust when I heard he forbid anyone at Bad Boy Records, staff, label and crew to testify in Voletta Wallace's trial against the City of L.A. for the murder of Biggie Smalls... that shit is straight treason, actually...
i love and hate this cliche joke, but that's a true sign that rap really is outta control.
and I remember hearing about that overcrowded party he threw back when it happened. Diddy did a gang of stuff that never got punished really... I still blame him for Shyne getting a fucked up deal and living in jail to this day. I agree with Nas about the shady lawyer situation Puff pulled.
convenient of him to leave that citi college stampede out of 'Notorious', wasn't it... but he's so gully he had to put in the scene where they originally performed 'Party and Bullshit' and the fight broke out, so they incorporated it into the final version of the song... that's a pretty selective memory recall
