groups that duped us

Post by Philaflava »

All of us have listened to an artist/group at one time where we actually enjoyed their music but years later we looked back and say how the FUCK could I ever listen to this shit.

One of those groups for me were Dilated Peoples. Remember in the late 90's they were dropping all those singles? They were real dope at the time; Work The Angles, Platform Remix, all those ABB 12" releases.

But damn I went back to listen to some of that stuff and let me just say it didn't age well at all. In fact, I cringe when I hear Evidence rap in that corny white but not trying to be too white sounding voice . That shit is just horrible. How in the hell did I ever fall for this?

Rakka was decent. Not Gift of Gabish but was always solid, but Dilated as a whole sucked when you think about it. I wish I could edit out Evidence on "Ear Drumps Pop."

Thanks to iCON for bringing this to my attention.

the LOX.

they made a big issue of getting off bad boy and puff. that it was the bad boy sound that was holding them back.

since getting off bad boy their promise of being a great group has gone unrealized. they have pretty much continued to drop uneven efforts both as a group and solo.

jada has great potential but never seems to come through
styles is like masta killah with a better voice.....by the way i think masta killah is awful. him and ugod have destroyed so many potentially good wu songs.
sheek, well i actually enjoy a lot of sheeks solo work.

I think they are more of a potential never realized type meets hype machine kinda deal.

for the most part i find that dudes like evidence should have just stayed producers. i never got into dilated or black eyed peas either for that matter and kinda forgive anyone else who did cause back then they operated in similar fashion to the trained ear. it just became dated over time.

for me, i dunno. i feel like i could have liked anti-pop a lot more but upon listening to tragic epilogue and arrythmia the last time, i was kinda confused how i initially got into them.

Beastie Boys. used to think Ill Communication and Check Your Head were amazing, envelope-pushing albums, now I find them boring repetetive and self-indulgent. (Pauls Boutique still sounds amazing though IMO, dust brothers's beats on that album never get old)

That's not really what we're talking about. You're talking about cats that fell off. I'm talking about cats that were never as good as we thought.

I agree, but I never thought Dilated was :ohsh:

they were the ultimate average rap group to me.

LOVE 'Work The Angles' though, and I respect them as people... but their music? zzzzzzzzzzz

ok, i'm pretty sure no one will agree with me but hear me out...
cl smooth
before you lose you shit, obviously, pete rock is one of the best producers ever. his beats with cl smooth are some of the most consistent and all around tight joints of all time BUT cl smooth was wack. sorry. he was. take away" T.R.O.Y." and his track record for dope verses is VERY weak. his voice and flow were cool but his lyrics fucking sucked. at times, he was on some nursery rhyme/ tv quoting shit like das efx but with out the iggity and it was just embarrassing. i remember about 6 or 7 years ago i decided to listen to "the main ingredient" in my walkman (yes, i rocked the cassette) and i was baffled by how wack he was. even on "mecca and the soul brother". it' a bad sign when your dj kills the whole album with one verse (for pete's sake) that he didn't even write.
so, yeah, cl smooth is garbage...or at least EXTREMELY overrated.

CL Smooth was painfully average. Corny most of the times but it worked on the albums. The Main Ingredient has shameful rhymes but I still can listen to it. Guru is better but not TOO far apart. It's just that Guru spit over some of the greatest beats ever and well "it's mostly the voice..."

Thun should cover "I Got A Love" next Wednesday.

Feel the vibe, when its bumpin in my tribe, steps the goodfellas
Live on screen now you protect the black queen
Takin my time from the black on black crime
Cause the night mecca hits, victoria runs out of secrets
Doin trials in latex lifestyles boo; I make you
Call my name, and ask who it belongs to
Brand new, with cl, in carmel, livin well
And never cease to flip the hottest dimepiece
Now the legend increase into a great, truly mecca made
So in every escapade theres a panty raid
You know the rules, slippin off them ewes; then we can settle
With the woman that can take me to that next level
Lay down the guns and make sons we can teach
From the horseback rides, and the walks on the beach
And if you got pretty feet I wont cheat
Im into strictly black pearls when I rocket yall to different worlds

i agree about guru, he was able to kill stories and his overall vibe was just more authentic to me. i still listen to "no shame in my game" and think that he was having serious revelations in that song.
cl smooth was just kind of a dork.

^ serious about CL Smooth? wow. he's one of my favorite lyricists ever.

"Showtime original, official with the smooth criminal
I hit the cliches on the subliminal
With the soul technician to fill the prescription
In addition listen close to the mission"

not a single weak verse on Mecca for me...fair enough if you don't like him tho', just saying...the way he flips verses is like poetry sometimes IMO

I think Evidence has been very consistent over the years, them being close to babu and alchemist, they always had above average production going for them.

Not to mention...Did any of you listen to the Weathermen LP? Shit was mad thorough, and i'd say on the level of elzhi, but just a little less on the schematic/pattern shit.

dilated peoples is a good example...a lot of stuff from the late 90's rawkus era indie boom fit into this thread nicely

Really liked Lords of The Underground in '93 and '94, and I literally cringe at that shit now.

That Yaggfu Front album really hasn't held up at all either.
