it was very different than the normal creative process for an atoms song. Usually we would record at cryptics house. he had a studio in the attic of his moms crib. I found recording with atoms to be very frustrating for a few reasons. first, none of us really knew what the hell we were doing at the time. part of it was because we were so young and new to everything. the other was because the equipment was changing over so cryptic had to learn new equipment constantly. So most times we would go there and get half a song done. I remember walking out of full on atoms family recording sessions at cryptics a few times mid session because i was so annoyed. The full atoms sessions were always time consuming clusterfucks and thats why there isnt a lot of material with all of us on it. It would usually start with all of us sitting around bullshitting for about 3 hours about whatever the fuck. then we would sit and try to come up with a concept for a song, that would eventually get shot down by the people who werent coming up with shit or would find an excuse as to why they couldnt write in a 4 bar and pass structure. If you make it beyond that point then you have people who would either disappear, or forget their rhyme book the next time we had a session. it was fucking annoying....i have fond memories but i remember being very annoyed quite often.AWAE wrote:can you talk about the creative process/recording of the song 'atom'?
Most times when we would get things done it would be two or three of us in the room and it would take hours on top of hours just to record a verse that we ended up re-recording a few weeks later. Vast was always a one take sort of dude, cryptic was very professional and super perfectionist so he would lay his verse down and then re-record it 20 times later on. I used to take hours to get a verse on track because i never had my verses memorized. wind was like a mix of me and vast. where as he knew his verse by heart it would still take him a long time. he is also a bit of a perfectionist and will re-record a verse 20 times and it will sound the same everytime but he will notice something different and be happy with it. jest just wasnt around that often, he had cars and girls. vordul would often show up without his rhyme book and/or just disappear for hours on end eventually comeback and freestyle.
The atom track was very different because we were never in the room together. vast was there for the whole thing. i dont think vordul was around much during the recording of it. him and vast both had just gotten into weed at the time and like most people when they are just getting into weed they tend to over indulge. Also we had a small window to get the song done so we had to come prepared. I ended up using a really old verse because i couldnt get something new that i liked enough to put out on an el p beat.
So we all recorded at el's home studio, which was weird because i was just getting to know el at the time and still looked up to him and was kinda in awe. so while it was exciting it was also intimidating to be in a recording studio with him watching you rhyme.

very original.Reggie wrote:Oh man you must remember some of these guys from your ciphering days:

Bizarro 5 of the Legion of Super Heroes
Big Kandy Kane

RuGGelach the Lyrical Windsock - he was ok. every now and again he would come with something fresh but most times he just kinda deaded the cypher by the time it got to him because he was on some mixing of a chant style with a more bones thug singing style. kinda gay.Reggie wrote:Oh man you must remember some of these guys from your ciphering days:

Da Blunted Pastor - i still see him from time to time at virgin on 42nd street. back then he was on some christian shit and all of his rhymes were geared towards that. I think now he is on some save hip hop shit. he gave me his cd, i never listened to it. it was a cdr style cd.
Hee-Mann anna Mastaz ov da Universal Mind'z EyE - Hee-Mann was kinda fresh. i though if anyone out of that crew was gonna make it it would have been him or maybe Jah-spy because that whole mad lion reggae style was big at the time and i remember bobbito loved those dudes. im surprised they never had a fondle'em release.
MC Chow Fun - kinda gimmicky. he was trying to do the wutang ninja kung fu movie thing. he had some styles but overall the novelty wore off quickly and he quickly disappeared.
Giz-Moe da Gremlin (of the rap crew Da Gremlinz) - She was ok, but she was really hot in a lauryn hill before she started dressing sexy sort of way. She had some skills too. A little too punchliny for my taste but over all she was cool. last i heard she was teaching at a school in brazil.
Bizarro 5 of the Legion of Super Heroes - More of a spoken word poet than an mc. used to run with mums da schema and them. kinda gay and spoken word poet style. i hate that shit.
Big Kandy Kane - another female mc. i think you are adding the big in front of her name as a big daddy kane joke but i dont think anyone called her that although she was big...i think she was like 6'4" maybe 220. I remember one time some dude from jersey was battling her, and she was kinda getting into him. Dude got all pissy and started calling her a cunt and a dyke. so she just sat back let him finish his rhyme and then knocked him out with one punch. shit was awesome.

lil sci - he was ok. i was honestly never really into his stuff. something about his voice got to me.
AL Skills - great cypher mc, never heard much of him on track.
Yeshua - a great traditional early to mid 90s era mc. amazing voice. very good flow and made one of the greatest eps ever. I also think brighton beach memoirs was a solid record, maybe a bit long. i was a big fan of yesh.

Apologies if you have already covered these, consider it payment for using my unauthorized likeness in your signature. that 'stache kicked fucking ass though...those were good times.
Tony Bones - I never heard that much of tony bones back in the day. i remember him being british and being fucking ill. everything i ever heard i liked, which was probably a few open mic performances and some stuff on stretch and bob.
Wale - i am not a fan, i havent heard a lot but everything i hear it sounds like he is tracing kanye or lupe which is kinda wack.
Phonte - technically he is a good mc but he just doesnt do anything for me. i hate that throwback style.
Kurious - first album was great. his guest appearances with doom were terrible
Cam'Ron - like him at times, good in small doses and guest appearances but for the most part i think he sucks and represents a lot of whats wrong with hip hop today.
Black Milk - never heard
Fabolous - same as cam but with a better skill set. he hasnt advanced at all since he first came out. he is kicking the same rhyme. every now and again he flashes brilliance, like on the song comedy central with clipse but otherwise i cant fuck with him.
Cee-Lo - i like cee-lo a lot. i always thought he was the second best dungeon family mc behind andre. i appreciate that he has branched out and show a much more complete side of himself as an artist and a person. dudes that have been rapping for 10+ years shouldnt be doing the same thing they did on their first guest appearance. if you doubt his skills the song fengshu on the gnarles barkley album is great. good schemes, use of subject and execution.
