Like I'm not even sure where to begin. Are you basically asking for any modern (let's say past 20 years) Japanese movie taking place in any big city in Japan that's not horror or anime? Because there's probably hundreds.
Can you be any more specific? Admittedly my knowledge of japanese cinema is mostly confined to the 40's through the 70's so I might not be overly helpful in any case.
Plus it doesn't help that genre movies are by far the most likely to be released overseas so you're mostly going to be limited to action and horror. But I don't know you can start with well known current directors like Shinya Tsukamoto, Takashi Miike, Hirozaku Koreeda, Juzo Itami (although again, it depends on how recent you want it, as Itami died in 97 so I don't know if 80's and 90's is too old or what), Kiyoshi Kurosawa (lots of horror though, might not be what you want), Shinji Aoyama, Shohei Imamura, Rokuro Mochizuki, I don't know, I'm probably forgetting lots of people.
and then there's mostly english language movies out there too like Black Rain, Tokyo Drift, Babel, etc

Sheesh lol at me completely forgetting Takeshi Kitano
Yeah check Kikujiro out now, it's a perfect summer movie, although it's mostly not in a big city
I don't know I have a hard time really recommending anything from the 00's that fits your criterion, that I've actually seen, and that I feel is a standout
I guess check out those directors on IMDB and see if any of the stuff they've done appeals to you, because for the most part I haven't seen their most recent movies
I mean Ichi the Killer took place in Tokyo I think, Kitano's movie Fireworks is really good but that's 98, I don't know, my head e broke can't think good

Full time killer is a chinese movie with 1 japanese actor. Not a single second of it takes place in tokyo. It is a pretty dope action movie though, no argument thereDonny Chicago wrote:Theres a movie called Full Time Killers... Takes place in china got japanese actors....
