Major Smash Bros. Shortages Ahead For Japan
By Chris Kohler EmailJanuary 29, 2008 | 2:35:12 PMCategories: Console Games
SmashboxjapanLooks like this week's release of the Wii fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Japan is more of a paper launch. Retailers are reporting that Nintendo is only shipping enough games to fill a tiny fraction of retail orders on January 31.
"Our Japanese and Hong Kong suppliers have notified us that Nintendo will only ship 25% of the game this week due to a production shortage," writes New York-based import games retailer National Console Support.
NCS says this means, for example, that vendors who ordered 100 copies of the game will only receive 25.
This isn't simply restricted to retailers outside of Japan. It's the country's domestic distributors that are having their allocations cut, meaning that it's likely that many consumers will be turned away disappointed this Thursday, when the game hits retail shelves in Japan.
"Nintendo has badly cut preorders placed by all distributors and is only shipping very limited quantities into the market this week," writes Hong Kong importer Play-Asia, where Game|Life has an outstanding order for the game.
It said that it only received enough copies of Smash Bros. to cover 15% of its preorders.
Adding insult to injury, Play-Asia noted that since the Chinese New Year holidays coming up next week, they expect that they won't be able to fill remaining preorders until the second half of February at the earliest.
Gamers worldwide are positively wracked with anticipation of 2008's first blockbuster Wii title, a fighting game featuring a panoply of Nintendo mascot characters. The previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros. Melee, was the Nintendo GameCube's biggest-selling title by a wide margin.
Smash Bros. fans were initially confused when Nintendo announced that the U.S. version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl would be delayed into March, about five weeks longer than Japan would have to wait.
With today's developments, the disproportionate delay now makes sense: Nintendo planned to just squeeze out enough copies into Japan to get the game on shelves this month and technically hit their announced release date... but not nearly enough to fill demand.
This wouldn't fly in the U.S., so we get to wait (and wait and wait) until they've manufactured enough copies.
In the meantime, we've got a preorder open that's not going to be filled until mid-February, so don't expect any Smash Bros. coverage on Game|Life unless a miracle happens.

you probably won't get a rip of the game for awhile because to rip it motherfuckers have to first buy it and that doesn't look like its going to be happening anytime soon.
it's now friday. has anyone seen this game posted online anywhere? ridicshazzb0t wrote:naw, i went there to see my lady. i'm about to move there in the next couple of months.spidah wrote:do you travel back and forth for business?shazzb0t wrote:i just got back from the jpn yesterday.. this game was popping off every where.. it was on the news for fucks sake..

Works with CycloWiz, but not WiiKey.
**EDIT**
I'm not sure that this rip is the complete game. Smash Bros. is the first dual layer game on the Wii, yet this fits on a DVD5.
grabbed this off mininova.. i read something about this on another forum, i hope the wiikey kids figure a patch or something out soonSigma wrote:Yep, it's on Usenet.it's now friday. has anyone seen this game posted online anywhere?

The DVD5 version does actually work with a WiiKey. It's the DVD9 (the full version of the game) that doesn't, and that includes the original, not just a copy.
Personally, I would wait for a proper DVD9 rip of the game, and for the WiiKey team to issue a fix. They're working on it. It seems a shame to play a butchered and buggy version of such an anticipated game.

The full DVD9 version of the game has been ripped.

Works with all mod chips too. You may get duplicate News and Weather Channels if you don't do the disc swap trick though (you do on PAL, not sure about NTSC-U), but you can use the DVD5 version for that. You'll need the new version of WiiBrickBlocker available from Rockman's site, as it has DVD9 support.
