i remember really getting into "my favorite things" in like middle school i think. then my mom copped this live coltrane CD that had "afro blue" and "ev'rytime we say goodbye" on it...i think i was in 7th or 8th grade. he's been a god to me ever since.
I was waging war against the evil paleface cavalry that had been chasing me through the everglades for months. They were infuriated that I had the audacity to train their runaway slaves for warfare against them, that the red man and the black man could forge an alliance and live in harmony based on our shared world view. A world view that did not rely on a man-god to deliver us from temptation, but looked to identify the spirit of everything as it is present within every man. In his heart. A Love Supreme if you will. The music of John Coltrane inspires me to this very day to resist the encroachment of the white man into my beloved Florida.

where did that quote about the palefaces come from.. it peaked my interest.
Ornette is great. Science Fiction is in my top 5 jazz LP's easily. Coltrane on the other hand is pretty much GOD. A Love Supreme is his most consistent and focused record. Also Ole Coltrane and Village Vanguard Tapes are pretty great too.

Was "Sleep Talking" Coleman's last? It came out last year and I thought it was pretty good, boring in some places but overall enjoyable.
Oh yeah, a Coltrane is of course appreciated. The only issue I have with him, like so much jazz music, is that in order to really explore his entire catalogue seems like it would take a lifetime.
