80's movies in the John Carpenter/Walter Hill mode

Post by drizzle »

So while the rest of you engage in innane film vs movie comparions (what the fuck is wrong with you people anyway), I'm gonna have me a thread about shit blowing up and boobies.

The idea here is that while Walter Hill and John Carpenter were the top dawgs in the 80's for all sorts of variants on low-budget action sci-fi and horror, they were not the only ones doing it and have inspired a bunch of very entertaining also-rans. This is the kind of stuff that now haunts TBS and the SciFi channel at 3am, which is a shame because they really need to be seen in their full uncut glory to be appreciated.

first thing that comes to mind:

Image

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093185/

prime example of butchering by network cable, this movie is AWESOMELY violent and grimy. there's enough dialogue samples here to fill 10 ignorant rap albums easily, check this out:

Tom Beck: Why would he come in here and kill a guy for a lousy hundred bucks and a radio?
Lloyd Gallagher: Because he likes it. He sees something he wants, he steals it. If something gets in his way, he kills it. And right now, he's hiding out in your city.

seriously, somewhere right now there is a d-list g-unit wannabe praying for something this badass to kick off his latest mixtape opus

While this isn't an 80's movie, it definitely fits the bill of what we are talking about here

 man

wow that thread was a long time ago, and ironically said the same exact things I said above, even used the same quote

i'm guessing a lot of the stuff i'm gonna put here was mentioned on the forum before. i just wanted to have a unified thing like we did with the 70's thrillers, in hopes of some unknown stuff being suggested

^^ scanners is lowbudget and both of those are great, but neither one of those is even in the same ballpark of what i'm going for here. If anything they're way too good for this thread

Not good, but highly entertaining. Wings Hauser and an albino mute Brion James

and rabid cannibals infected by the town's water supply

uh

and a flaming butt flying through the air

an obvious Gremlins ripoff, but with more gore and much meaner sense of humor.

Gritty and violent revenge drama The Exterminator is written and directed by James Glickenhaus and follows a traumatised Vietnam vet who decides to take the law into his own hands when his friend is beaten up and paralysed by street thugs. John Eastland (Robert Ginty) proceeds to wage a personal war against the members of society whom he finds morally and socially repugnant.

not from the 80's sorry, but I don't have another thread to put this in, but I also saw this recently:

Image

and it was so dope

just such a solid, likeable action movie. Gary Busey gets to do his thing, the other guy (whose name escapes me) is cool, the movie is fun, just good stuff.

It's basically about a cop (busey) obsessed with tracking down a gun runner (the other guy). Eventually they meet up in south america, the other guy seduces busey's wife, busey fucks his gun shipment up, they end up fighting to the near death on a raft going downriver and they end up being captured by the army and chained together as punishment in a prison work camp. The usual escapes and meetings with rebels and bonding and such commence.

nothing new, but man I dug it

it's basically a bloody techno-noir thriller with one of those soundtracks that sounds like a loop of robots raping kittens with household items. very industrial type techno, but it really gives the movie an incredible feel. the color shemes in this are on some other shit...

my favorite movie from when i was little

this one is actually dead on for the overall theme of the thread, it's an americanized remake/homage of a well known asian character in the same way that Big Trouble in Little China is an homage to swordplay movies
