Damn Drizzle, can't agree here at all.drizzle wrote:you def shouldcascarrabias wrote:drizzle wrote:apocalypto >>> both kill bills![]()
Maybe I should watch Apocalypto.
to me, both kill bills are collections of good scenes that don't quite add up to a quality sum. they're good, i didn't hate them and was entertained, but nowhere near great or QT's best. He is better at ripping bits from his favorite movies and making them his own than he is at emulating those same movies.
Plus, Uma is literally one of the worst and most unconvicing action heroines ever. The attitude is there, but she doesn't have the physical skills to back it up. Almost as bad at screen fighting as Keanu and Lawrence Fishburn were in the matrix. She holds a sword the same way a 6yr old holds a party balloon
Apocalypto is nowhere near as good "Kill Bill". Sorry, but it's just not. While Apocalypto is a pretty cool movie to behold, Gibson truly didn't hold anything back in terms of scenery, the plot is so formulaic and cheesy that it fails to be anything more than slightly above average. Ant heads as bandages doesn't make it a good movie.
I had very few issues with Uma as the lead in Kill Bill. I think if it had been edited better instead of split into two movies Kill Bill would be getting much more dap than it already is.

So wait, a guy trying to return to his family after being captured is formulaic and cheezy, but somebody trying to take revenge on the people that killed her family is NOT formulaic. Well shit yeah, I've NEVER EVER EVER EVER seen a revenge movie before.
Where are you guys seeing all these movies that are so similar and better that Apocalyto as to make it seem tired and rehashed? I'd like to watch some of them.

The Tarantino fan boys are out of control. You might not like the subject matter of The Passion of the Christ cause it's not as "kewl" as Grindhouse, lol, but don't front on Gibson's direction in that film. The direction, and moreso the cinematography, in Passion are top notch. If you don't believe me, ask your boy:mud wrote: the 20 minute conversation in Death Proof looped over and over 6 times>>>>>>>passion of the christ

LA Weekly: Is there any movie around you wish youגd made?
Quentin Tarantino: If I had done the opening 10 minutes and opening credits of the Dawn of the Dead remake, Iגd be very proud. And believe me, I was against remaking George Romero ג that was sacrilege. I donגt think I would have the mania to make The Passion of the Christ, but Iגd be proud of the results. Those are the only things playing around right now that are terrific.
LA Weekly: So you saw The Passion of the Christ?
QT: I loved it. Iגll tell you why. I think it actually is one of the most brilliant visual storytelling movies Iגve seen since the talkies ג as far as telling a story via pictures. So much so that when I was watching this movie, I turned to a friend and said, גThis is such a Herculean leap of Mel Gibsonגs talent. I think divine intervention might be part of it.ג I cannot believe that Mel Gibson directed it. Not personally Mel Gibson ג I mean, Braveheart was great. I mean, I canגt believe any actor made that movie. This is like the most visual movie by an actor since Charles Laughton made The Night of the Hunter. No, this is 15 times more visual than that. It has the power of a silent movie. And I was amazed by the fact that it was able to mix all these different tones. At first, this is going to be the most realistic version of the Jesus story ג you have to decipher the Latin and Aramaic. Then it throws that away at a certain point and gives you this grandiose religious image. Goddamn, thatגs good direction! It is pretty violent, I must say. At a certain point, it was like a Takashi Miike film. It got so fucked up it was funny. At one point, my friend and I, we just started laughing. I was into the seriousness of the story, of course, but in the crucifixion scene, when they turned the cross over, you had to laugh.

There's been a ton of "my family has been taken from me so now I gotta get em back" films. I'm not saying that revenge films haven't been done, but you have to admit ones that star females are somewhat rare to begin with. This isn't really what I'm beefing about.drizzle wrote:So wait, a guy trying to return to his family after being captured is formulaic and cheezy, but somebody trying to take revenge on the people that killed her family is NOT formulaic. There were many parts in Apocalypto where you know what was going to happen. This you have admitted. They put wifey in a hole, make her give birth while almost drowning, and home boy gets there to save her just in the nick of time? Just silly shit. Also, there were very few twists or surprises in the film. It's basically just A B C storytelling. The grandeur of the film itself just wasn't enough to forgive the plot.
I'm not saying that Apocalypto is a terrible movie, I just don't think it's nearly as good as some on here think.
There were far fewer predictable parts in Kill Bill. Yes, you knew she was going to kill everyone, but they threw in some amazing fights, backstory, a few twists, and it's fun. It's a more complete film I thought.

nothing wrong with an a b c plot, an action movies benefits from a simple stream lined plot imo - more focus on the action itself. Kill Bill to me was kinda all over the place, QT is way too self indulgent with little asides and extra quirks thrown in just for the fuck of it. He's basically never had an idea that he didn't like, and that to me detracts from the overall experience.
But that's all minor in the grand scheme of things, the bottom line is that Kill Bill just didn't deliver on the action to me. A martial arts movie sinks or swims on the fighters and the fights, I've watched dozens of them where i fast forwarded through everything but the fights and still enjoyed the fuck out of the movie (ong bak and the protector immediately come to mind). If the style and the sense of fun QT brought to the plate was backed up with somebody who actually knew how to kick or hold a sword, I would rate it much much higher.
On a separate note, there's actually a whole genre of chick revenge movies, not rare by a long shot. Look at Pam Grier's career for example, and that's just tip of the iceberg.

If this was a poll for Best Screen Writer, and Almodovar was a choice, I wouldn't think twice about picking him.Icesickle wrote:I didn't know we had such a large transgender contingent up in this mothafucka.
I'll put both of these on here but tell me who's replaceable?
Let's start with Apatow and Bird. Not that I haven't enjoyed either of their movies, but if you put the two of them in the Best Director Oscar category for their best movies from the past decade with the likes of Lee's, Scorsese's, or Spielberg's best movies from the past decade, are you really gonna hold your breath?

so, am i a fratboy meathead for picking judd apatow? i consistently have enjoyed his work more than anyone's else's. marty is the shit, but as much as i've enjoyed his recent work, i honestly think i've been more entertained by judd apatow's shit.
there are a couple people on this list i have been snoozing on.

I'm not saying that chick revenge films have never been done, but they're rarer than male revenge flicks. I can't remember many others in the last ten years from a big time studio either. I'm not saying there weren't any, I just can't pull any off the top.drizzle wrote:nothing wrong with an a b c plot, an action movies benefits from a simple stream lined plot imo - more focus on the action itself. I enjoyed the action in Kill Bill a lot. I mean, there's really no way to fuck with the Crazy 88 fight. But that's whatever. You didn't like the action, that's fine. Comparing it to a Jaa movie is sort of unfair though. Kill Bill isn't your standard action movie like Ong Bak or The Protector as there's more of a focus on back story and relationships in addition to the fighting.
I'll definitely agree that Tarantino is self indulgent and that the dialogue can get in the way (as we all saw in Death Proof), but I think Kill Bill is a quality movie.

I can't believe Chan-wook Park is not listed on this poll, that is blasphemy.
Oldboy (2003) ALONE should warrant his name being up here. Plus Joint Security Area (2000) and the other two titles in the Revenge series albeit Mr Vengeance was OK, Lady Vengeance was great.
Oldboy was probably my favorite film of this decade, the cinematography, score and everything else was put together in such a masterful way that words just can't describe it.

Thank you. Park is an incredibly gifted director but Oldboy tanks in the 3rd act, terrible resolution. Med Student is very on point with the film's strengths, I agree with those. However I will still argue that the biggest reason it got so popular is the shock value. Lady vengeace was good but shallow, too caught up in its own style. Mr. Vengeance is my favorite out of the 3 actually, subdued visually but imo but much more effective on the emotional level than the other 2.Trademark wrote:Med Student wrote:I can't believe Chan-wook Park is not listed on this poll, that is blasphemy.

hmm... I might have to check that out, haven't caught it yet, is it brand new? I guess I simply disagree with you about Oldboy, because I thought the last third of the movie was great, albeit my favorite part wierdly enough is the first third of the film, particularily the part where he walks up to the dudes in the alley and takes the guys smoke, then gets knocked on his back, and the music kicks in, and he says something along the lines of "dipshit.. never heard of it, they don't put swear words on television" then asks whether its possible to put into practice his training in fighting theory and kicks the shit of the dudes... so amazing...drizzle wrote:Thank you. As someone who loves movies but doesn't study them beyond the occasional bit of interesting insight, I think Oldboy is one of the hottest movies since 2000. "Overrated" is not an opinion, it's a point of comparison. That word doesn't fuckin' mean anything, it just means you're a sore pussy over how many people liked it in the first place.
There's a reason that shit elicited the type of reaction it did. It's not fucking shock value. It's because it's the only movie most people have seen where a man fucks up a hallway full of people with a hammer. It features hot incestuous action. It's got a discernible, hateful villain.
I don't know if these qualities amount to "masterful", but I don't see how "overrated" is an opposite stance in the argument. When you first saw the movie, did you already know how the rest of the world received it? How did you feel about it?
AND WHY HASN'T CUARON BEEN ADDED TO THIS POLL YET, YOU NARCISSISTIC, SELF-IMPOSING, UNINTERESTING FUCK?

Mostly agree with all of that except that I really loved Lady Vengeance more than the other two. I didn't think the film was shallow at all. Liked the story, liked the acting, liked the look. I'll definitely agree that Oldboy resonates mostly cause of the shock value. That hallway fight scene is truly amazing though, loved everything about that. All three are solid films, but in terms of ranking I just reverse the order they were released.drizzle wrote:Thank you. You say this movie's wide popularity is not based on shock, then you go on to site two of the things that go the farthest to take the average viewer out of their comfort zone as the movie's main strengths. How is that not shock value?Captin Planit wrote: There's a reason that shit elicited the type of reaction it did. It's not fucking shock value. It's real simple - you can gauge the movie's appeal by what most people take away from it. The parts that made an impact and stayed on viewers minds are not teh beautful cinematography, not the fine acting, not the underlying themes, in short none of the things that actually make this a good movie. The part that consistently impresses the fans is the fact that the fucks his daughter. Again, how is that not shock value?

If chinatown didn't have the incest it would still be remembered as one of the greatest movies ever made. If oldboy didn't have the incest and the rest of that shit it wouldn't have half the following it does now.AWAE wrote:word same as chinatown pure shock value..
And don't think for a second that Chinatown wasn't controversial and shocking as hell when it came out either.

I don't know, I still think everything else about Oldboy is super dope.
And how far do you go to strip it of its shock value? The majority of the plot? 'Cuz if that's the case, then if you stripped the movie of its shock value, it'd be a completely different movie. The shock value paired with the cinematography and the story's depth make the movie what it is. Writing it off as an exercise in deplorable shock treatment underestimates it as much as any fanboy overrates it by calling it a masterpiece.
