well as of now today, i would say that will smith has done much more for the overall culture. between the tv show and his films, he has managed to put hiphop into the homes of a lot of people who probably would have never caught it, and consequently brought some of the younger ones to the table with us. and as a parent, i can't disrespect the way he brings it to kids. but there's still plenty of time for both of them to continue a positive growth, or to become a negative piece.
as far as straight-up judging on skills, it's a hard one to compare because they come from different times. fresh prince was ahead of his time with the storytelling in the late 80's, as was em in the mid-late 90's.
fresh prince was ahead of his time with multi's and cadence in the late 80's as well, as was em in the late 90's and today.
em never had a dj that influenced the way that will's did.
i might have to go with will on this, which seems kind of odd to me, cause i've always had a lot of respect for em's rapping. but now that i'm thinking about it, i think at this stage will has been a huge service to hiphop, whereas em has been a huge service to mainly just aspiring lyricists (though mostly white boys), and misunderstood teens? its a tough because overall in catalog, Will Smith has some ill classics and Em does, too, but I guess its based on the which era you were more into. Em, as an emcee, really made dudes step it up (black and whites alike) even though Will Smith, like you said, was ahead of his time with the lyrics.

Right now I'm gonna have to go with Will Smith. anything Eminem has done recently is really dumbed down and doesn't compare to his shit from late 90's/early 00's.. i'm not even interested in it anymore - atleast I check for Will's movies. Big Willies got the acting skills. Hitch was dope, don't even front.

Eminem is one of those rappers that's impossible to appreciate outside of adolescence.
Will Smith's early records are timeless, even if most teenagers act hard and front on em.

But thanks for those Eminem comps. I'll have to make myself a mix of favorites. His early non-album material until about 2001 is dope battle-rap no matter how you slice it.

At first I recoiled in horror, but following posts backed that statement up. I talked about it with some of my homeys and I got them to concede my adopted viewpoint. Em was dope, but like FDB said, in a way that i've grown past/tired of appreciating. Will was there with Jeff in my childhood. If he released an album tomorrow I bet it would be dope. MNM has fallen off and I geniunely cringe when i hear his voice.
