Nas is like is great, the problem is that every third song Premo produced after that had exactly the same formula (Bragging battle-ish verse over a chopped and re-aranged sample where an overly flossy emcee shows token love to "real Hiphop", scratched chorus, repeat). That model was there before obviously but Nas is like really codified it to the point where everyone knows what "A Premo banger" sounds like. He used to be more unpredictable.
Takes nothing away from Nas' shit mind you, he did it first and arguably best. It'd be an interesting poll to line songs solely in that style up though (Nas is Like, Boom, So Ghetto, etc)

I disagree. "Nas Is Like" has a ridiculous beat and a semi-decent concept - things Nas is Like. But ultimately it doesn't hold the weight of a lot of songs on this list do. For a Nas/Primo collabo I prefer "NY State of Mind" anyday. "Nas Is Like" may be one of the best beats (arguably the best) on this list, but it is not the best song (IMO of course).

I'm not saying it's best on the list, I'm saying it's arguably the best in that style of Premo song.B. I got you... you're just sayin' it's "great" and I'm sayin' it's good (if a little formulaic) and not one of my favorite Nas/Primo joints. But for that formula I'll agree with you that it is one of the best joints.Funk Docta Bombay wrote:I'm not saying it's best on the list, I'm saying it's arguably the best in that style of Premo song.B.
