The Internet Sorta Ruined Videogames

Post by SeaTownBlues »

When I was in elementary school, I used to go to the local Blockbuster with my mom twice a month, and each time I would get to pick out one game. It would take me about 15 minutes to choose each time, and I would carefully consider the game based on box art, screenshots on the back, and anything I might have read in Nintendo Power Magazine.

I ended up enjoying games that probably would not have received great, or even good, ratings on any of the online videogame sites they have these days.

Saddingly, I don't rent games anymore, and I never ever buy a game without consulting ign.com or gamespot. I know I'm missing out on a lot of games that I would probably enjoy if I wasn't such a ratings snob, but I just don't have time to experiment with every game in the store anymore, and I think that is sad.

The internet ruined videogames for me and it is sad.

I have great memories of Blockbuster and video games from when I was a kid. If a game was brand new my mom would call in advance and tell them to hold a copy for me and then she'd drive me over there like Speedracer.

I remember when Ninja Turtles came out I ran into the store to get a copy and turned into the aisle where the game was, just as another kid showed up on the other end. We kind of eyed each other for a second before bursting into a sprint towards the last available copy of Ninja Turtles. I beat that bitch by a mile, I think I made him cry.

i think it's more the fact that game rentals cost so much now...

if it wasnt 5 fucking dollars for a 3 day rental i might be more inclined to rent games instead of buying them right off the bat.

i'm sure theres a few gems i'm missing by only copping the games that get good/great reviews but there's also a fucking ton of "Deadly Towers" that i don't have to spend 100 hours on. if a game looks interesting, and i read a bad review for it, i'll still decide based on personal taste whether or not it's worth checking out.

from what i've read, i halfway expect "Killer 7" to get hated on but the game's art style looks so fucking ill that i'll cop it even if it gets straight 5/10's.

Before the internet I was a videogame magazine fiend, so ratings have mattered for as long as I've been playing games. In fact, I rely a lot less on reviews now. I find the opinions of regular gamers like the ones in here much more valuable, as subjective as they are.

Edge is the only video game mag I still buy. Their conservative rating system reminds me of when The Source's 5 mic rating system had any genuine crediblity many years ago.

As for the internet ruining games, hardly. I try to download a trailor if available to see a game in action, that speaks louder to me than standing at a video game store judging a game's merits solely on it's box art. Playable demos are still the greatest option available however.

I don't trust reviews because a lot of shit I have played as of late don't get american reviews and if they do they get unjust reviews.....I get the game and play it for myself....most of the hyped up "perfect 10" games I see reviews of today i would give a 6 at best to.....

Most of those reviews are so slanted you can ignore them.

I buy like one game a year, and usually that's from word of mouth.

I felt the same way, I was going to support this game pretty much no matter what the scores were. But luckily, Famitsu gave this game something like 9,8,9, and a 10

Reviews usually reinforce my choices, but I don't take them as canon law.
