You are wrong. He is an average striker, who finally converted after wasting numerous wonderful passes from Beckham. Anybody else on the team, striker or not, would have scored on several of the balls he was set up with, which he missed. He is not a good dribbler, is not very fast, is not a particularly good passer, and creates very few opportunities for himself and/or his teammates. The only goals he really scores are headers and tap-ins.

Owen and Rooney are far, far better players than he (as are Defoe, Wright-Phillips, and several other English strikers for that matter) and he has no place starting an England match if they are both fit. Nowhere near 'vital' to our team.
Yes, Owen and Rooney are better, no one would argue that. But his height is such a presence that he is very effective.
He's produced, and you can't argue that.
Being that the majority of England's goals are on set pieces and balls swung in from the wing, he is certainly an asset if the "only goals he scores are headers and tap-ins."

regardless, I would love to see Defoe on the pitch.

who the fuck has ever played a 3-4-3 tho?
lol cant say i have seen a 3-4-3 .

the Netherlands / Ajax

why would you play with 4 defenders against a team with 1 or 2 strikers?
you need 2 full backs to counter an opposing wing threat.

if you were to play 3-4-3 against a team with Ryan Giggs and Marc Overmars in their primes you'd be at a severe disadvantage

I meant 1 or 2 strikers in the centre. England and Sweden should have played 3-4-3 against TNT but their managers happen to be pussies who like to defend, even when they play against a team that lack skills and only got 1 striker. Attack is the best defense imo.

except if your Brazil, who play a unique 4-4-2 which is essentially a 4-2-2-2 because the "4" center midfielders hold to primarily a central role to let the outside backs act like outside midfielders and attack for the cross...when the backs do this, the defensive center backs drop back to cover the outside backs' marking duties until they recover...what is the advantage?...automatically you always have numbers up in midfield (4 to a normal teams 3or2) which calls for the opposing teams outside midfielders to pinch in and help...this almost always opens up that lane on the outside for the backs to transition unmarked and an easy transition for the central midfielders to support in all directions...but you have to have skilled outside backs that can make the offensive transition and effectively get crosses off into the box or feed the attacking midfielders/forwards...as well you have to have midfielders that are able to hold onto the ball effectively and transition well...who else in the world has attacking backs like roberto carlos and cafu (wait until you see cecinho play-20 years old), they have the freedom to go up and score like they do....

no one really plays this formation except Real Madrid who had a Brazilian coach.

For real though, I'm very impressed with them. They haven't even played that great but they're able to dominate with ease. I bet none of them has begun to sweat yet and they're up 3-0 at halftime :hooray:

Here come the dutch 1-0, Ivory Coast is getting some looks on offense though good game so far. As for winning it all the Spainish and the Agentenians both look really good right now, but i think brazil will turn it on when it matters.

Someone should go get Hernan Crespo because he's gonna be available and cheap. That little heal pass was nasty.

pff we were terrible but got the three points and qualified for the second round. I feel sorry for Ivory Coast. they have a great team. they played good but didnt create enough real chances. they had most possession of the ball but didnt have the creativity to open our defense. they would have qualified for the second round if they had a little bit more luck (or were in another group). we had about 3 or 4 chances and scored twice. the van Persie free kick was class. he was MOTM imo. the only player (with vd Sar and Boulharouz) who deserved to wear the orange shirt.

swapping van Nistelrooij (striker) for Landzaat (defense midfielder) was a bitch move. jesus christ... I rather see Netherlands lose with good attacking football than win with this defensive shiiit.

somebody give me a reason why i shouldn't bet on the us tomorrow..

they're +600...

which means i bet 10 bucks, to win 60 bucks (plus my 10 back..)...

they're not THAT big of underdogs, are they? italy's at -250 right now, so apparently they are..

but they're gonna come out and play with heart, right?

gonna bet 20 bucks i'm pretty sure, speaking in terms of value, that's gotta be a good bet, right? means they only have to win once every 5 games against italy for me to make money...

but that's a HUGE line..gotta be a reason..

anyone?

it's do or die for them, so they better play with heart. If you can afford to lose 10 dollars, go for it.

Arenas hasn't mentioned the starters has he? Hopefully Eddie Johnson can get a start.

you can't afford to lose 10 bucks??? i was actually thinking about 50 bucks...

and as a prop bet...you can get eddie johnson at 30-1 to score the first goal..

if he starts, i might drop a fiver...he was the only one getting shots against the czechs...hell, even if he comes in at halftime...

but yeah, 20 bucks to win 120...i think i'm there...the line's even come down from a start of -650, which means people are betting us..

Well yeah, the U.S. looked like complete shit, and their heads apparently weren't screwed on straight.

I wasn't thinking about betting until the second round, but thats worth putting a few bucks on I think.

People thought the U.S. had a chance to beat Italy coming into the tourney.

[quote]I have developed a certain fondness for players based on their names alone. Here is my very biased list of the best names in the 2006 World Cup.

Loco, Angola,
Razak Pimpong, Ghana
Yaya Toure, Ivory Coast
Jerko Leko, Croatia
Jamba, Angola
Bastian Schweinsteiger, Germany
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Netherlands
DaMarcus Beasley, United States
Lee Ho, South Korea
Franck Ribery (only because he plays for France and you can say
