ACTION GAMES MY FRIENDS

Post by Useff »

I'm pissed, I had a post written out and then my browser froze when I was viewing another page. This is what I remember from it.

SO WHAT THE FUCK

I want this to be a thread where people introduce new action games to others as well as discuss favorites. It's a pretty broad term, and a lot of genres are covered - shmups, run-and-gun, platforming, &c. It would also be nice if you could upload or link to the game.

Alien Soldier, or This Game is FUCKED after Level 17 (Genesis)

I firmly believe that this is one of the best games ever created. Great controls, music, and graphics. Crazy difficult, but it can be overcome. I can basically breeze through up until the boat scene with the teddy bear and then things start to get tough. I can't beat the huge eagle. Haven't found a practical application for the fixed shot, and I think that's part of what's holding me back from mastery - the comfort level I have with the weapons and stance I use. LOL @ joker frog.

Abuse (PC)

So many lesser-known fantastic action games on the PC. This is one of my favorites. I love this game. It's like a muddier, more visceral contra with superhuman abilities. The muddiness is also a downside, some levels seem repetitive. The main website is down, but I just found a pretty good site that might have everything you need. More and more information on Abuse is being lost and that's sad.

Hmmm, I don't know how much I can contribute to this thread but I am looking forward to checking out those games and hearing about other games I have overlooked/missed.

word to Abuse...that was great

also, I used to love Cyborg Justice. Building your own cyborg was so much fun, and stealing enemy body parts and attaching them to yourself was great.

Flashback (for PC/Mac/Genesis/SNES/3DO/Jaguar) is another one of my favorites. Image

---

the best action game of the year IMO is Lugaru, which I made a thread about recently. its has the best fighting system of any game I've played.

---

but my all-time favorite action game is Out Of This World (Mac/PC) (called Another World outside the U.S.) Its a side-scroller with an excellent story and clever puzzles. You're basically a science professor who accidentally transports himself to an alien world and is subsequently enslaved by aliens. With the help of an alien prisoner to meet, your goal is to escape prison.

Once you figure out all the puzzles, you can easily beat the game under an hour. I've probably beaten this game more than any other.

The game was voted the #1 DOS game ever on Moby Games, and was recently released to the public domain for play on the Game Boy Advance

Flashback and Out Of This World are both dope, I have both for SNES.

There was a sequel to one of them, I don't remember the title or to which game though.

I plan on revisiting Flashback and Out of This World soon. I wasn't able to beat them when I was young. I'm gonna check out Lugaru now.

funny story about Flashback, I was 9, maybe younger, it was christmas eve and me and my twin brother, who shared a room, went to bed early because we knew the earlier we went to bed the sooner my parents would set out the presents. We had rented flashback knowing that we would get it longer since the video store would be closed the next day and extend our rental period until the 26th. We sat and played the game to its end in one night, when we finished it was 730AM, we had stayed up the entire night. We went downstairs and played with the presents they sat out from "santa" and had not wrapped. I fell asleep about 8am and my parents woke me up at about 9 to open the rrest of the presents. I had the stomach flu, bad, I threw up immediately which would set a trend that happened for the next two days. I'm not sure why I got sick but I always blame it on the game, not that it was the games fault but you know how when you get really sick you associate things you did during that sickness with that feeling and it is hard to do them again? Well that is what flashback is to me, the stomach flu, and I haven't played it since. Maybe I will...

you can download OOTW and Heart of the Alien for Sega CD here:

http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/44418 ... o-mp3.html

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a Sega CD emulator for Mac yet, so I won't be able to try it until I get home from college and try it on my PC.

EDIT: fuck, it looks like you need to pay for a subscription to download it there. you could probably find the ROM on another site though

These used to scare the shit out of me as a kid. They're the best horror/suspense games IMHO. I remember thinking how phenomenal the graphics were the first time I played it.

^ Is Alone in the Dark the progenitor of the survival horror genre?

That reminds me of the (supposedly, I still haven't played it) excellent Clock Tower for SNES. Not exactly a pure action game, but deserving of a mention. There's a full translation patch out there for it, too.

Image

I got to the end of the Lugaru demo, seems pretty good.

Yeah...it seems like many newer games like Resident Evil borrowed a lot from the Alone in the Dark series. I'm sure that other horror/survival-type games came out before it, but Alone in the Dark defined and perfected the genre IMHO.

I'm glad you liked it. Its unfortunate that you can't fight with staffs and swords or learn how to properly do reversals in the demo though.

Seriously, Flashback and Cyborg Justice were two of my favorite games back in the dizzay.

I almost came on here and made a Flashback post a while back.

When me and my brother played Cyborg Justice he would be infuriated whenever i ripped off his arms and shit. What a fun game. I think that one saw arm was my favorite.

Gunstar Heroes is classic. Another awesome Treasure game.

My vote is for Strider. Great platform game that gets pretty hard towards the end. You also get to spend a level fucking up amazon bitches and DINOSAURS with your LASER SWORD.

Come the fuck on!

Strider for NES is underappreciated. Maybe even better than the Arcade/Genesis version, as a console game.
