these were pretty unique, nice to see howeveryone did it different, props to has, you gotta be in the battle next time though
hh-helicopter-i love the feel of this, drums work well with it, very nice and unexpected changeup, got a little too sporadic at the end, was waiting for the return back to the original melody, but that random voice is nice
overall very nice
operator-unpredictability-nice vocal samples, they work well with the rhythm, they are getting a little redundant after about a minute, i would have done more repeating of them. was waiting for some kind of change in the music. needs to be something more in the melody to stand out IMO
tayonist-this is real muffled in my speakers, the samples are working well together though. not a big fan of the drums here. felt like nothing really happened here, some parts faded in and out but not much else.
still illiterate-the mc does a great job on this track, bass line seems slightly off key and rhythm, not much but just enough to tell. drums work well. looking for something else to take over the melody or something
estyles-subotage-drum pattern is well put together, the snaps dont seem to fit as well with the overall feel of the piece, but good nonetheless. the changeup is very nice, snares are nice here. pretty solid overall
master 416-this rhythm and the vocals are just slightly off here, i think slightly more swing or offset is needed here to compliment royce's cadence, not sure what it is, buts it noticeable at the end of every four bars. the song started off sounding like it was gonna be savage but really changed, didnt seem to fit together well, nice chopping though
hwilliams-sorry but that vocal sample is really annoying, cant stand the dudes voice. the track is bouncing but it needs some more type of melody to separate it from just a loop, drum work is nice here
2root2-i love the feel of this man. when the drums hit its nice, the keys here are great too, works with the mood. i feel like more should have happened here, thought there would be more of a melody to take over. i guess a minimalist approach, i like it though
citizeN-i must say this nice. this is the instrumental for a diss track im making against my mail man. he needs to stop folding envelopes...
cadence weapon-dig...hmm this is funny, i dig. hi hat is buggin me, too loud. if you are gonna do an open hat, i think your closed ones should be every eighth note. oh man the sample arrangement here is nice, really isnt working with the drums, but nevertheless the really well done here. dont dig the trumpet one as much with the blaring sped up samples, those are a bit annoying. if drums got reworked, maybe add some bass this could be real good
bizzle-this is funky, i dont think the samples are all totally in pitch with each other, but its really close. the guitar and strings work well to hold this all together, nice job, good choice for a changeup
dfiend-this is a nice collection of loops, i think something else needs to happen here, i dunno, not much to comment on, whats up with that voice in there

Re: Beat Battle Voting Thread
2root2 - really moody beat...definitely digging it. built nicely....drums sound a little too loud in the mix maybe.
Digital Fiend - this wasn't bad...but you could have done a lot more with it, imo. overall the track just needs a lot more focus.
bizzlestiltskin - this is pretty funky....a little over-chopped maybe, but i understand people wanted to keep things original. a think the tunes could have been a little tighter as well.
Cadence Weapon - dope intro....love the vocal samples. i was hoping more people would use more vocal samples. digging the change up...really like the beat though i think it's lacking a bassline.
citizen - this is grimeyyyyy. mix is a little low....feeling the change ups. very nice man.
Henessee Williams - this is dope....intro is really fresh....mix feels right. no complaints really, nice job.
Master416 - like the beat....it sounds kinda low compared to the vocals...which are off. also could use a bassline for sure.
e-styles - this is cool....i dig the drums. built it up with some nice extras. change up is pretty fresh.
still illiterate - cool track....was looking for a little more variation but was still digging.
tayoisnt - mix sounds a little muddy, but i'm feeling this. definitely has your 'style'....very dreamy sounding.
operator - like the vocal samples...but i think the beat needs to do more. the little breakdowns are cool....but i kept waiting for a change up.
hiphopapotamus - dude, you killed this. you flipped the fuck out of those sample and the drum work is bananas. dope shit, for real.
props to everyone who got down on this.

hiphopapotamus-this starts out dope, i'm feeling this one. the drums are tight. not too big a fan of the super fast drums on the changeup, but the melody is tight. the ending was way dope. so far, my favorite.
hennesee--this is cool, i'm likin the drums. that led zep sample diddn't really fit to me in some parts. the voice does get a lil repetitive after all those loops. the changeup is cool. tight bassline.
operator--this is ok so far. laid back, kind of like a soul on ice vibe here. overall, it's cool.
still illiterate--the drum loop is getting kinda played out by now. this isn't bad, but a little too minimal for me. that little ambient/flute sample or whatever would be cool with some more stuff added in.
estyles-can't really get my head nodding to this one immediately. it feels like the samples take to the background behind the drums and sub bass. pretty minimal in that aspect. i never fully start grooving to this one. but i can tell you put a lot of subtle details into this.
tayo-the kick drum is fat with that bassline, i like it. feels like it skips or something from time to time, or hiccups or something. this is cool.
master-yeah the vocals are mixed up way too high, and there seems to be no bass on this beat at all. my speakers do not rattle at all. this aint bad though. the changeup part is tight. cool stuff.
i'll add the rest later today. overall, i thought they were all dope though. good work guys.

I really wish I could do this again, I mixed mine horribly. My drums are really low and my vocals are pretty high aswell.
The problem was I was lazy. I didn't want to save each individual sample like always so I made that beat and mixed it down and just turned off my cpu, I couldn't add any touch up's or anything, which is extremely dumb on my part.

other than the mixing issues you mentioned, i thought yours was one of the best. it wasnt necassarily the most technically sound in the group, but definatly one of the most pleasing to the ear. in my eyes, probably the best beat thats intended to be rapped over in the contest.MASTER416 wrote:I really wish I could do this again, I mixed mine horribly. thanks for the feedback. Thats what I always go for, as far as rapping over my beats. I would have liked to be able to do this over again though, I think I could have came with something really dope.
Peace

2root2 - this is a pretty solid downtempo song. Takes a little to long to get going but once you start adding it comes together nicely. The delayed snare is a nice touch. Add some wind chimes and an open hat and this could be a Bonobo track. Pro sound and dope overall.
Digital Fiend - The pieces of the song are all nice but the feel is too sparse overall. Out of all of the songs you have posted, this track has the nicest drums. An MC might tie this together well.
Bizzle - Interesting arrangement but its not really working for me. The snare is nice and snappy but a little too much treble on it. The first breakdown with the piano sample is nice. The middle of the track is more straightforward and it works better than the beginning/end.
Cadence Weapon - I'm feelin the reverse drums. Everything sounds out of tune, but for some reason I think that is cool. Your track truly sounds nothing like anyone else

2root2 - immensely fucking listenable. i realllly dig how you loosened everything up. like, if the sample was doing laps of the english channel, you caught it right in the middle of wondering how much longer it'll take to tap hands with the coast. good shit, definitely. the drums rattle along some'm marvelous.
bizzle - a little too rigid for my tastes, and the background guitar chop feels a little extra, like garlic butter on a hamburger bun. the flute line is cool, if a bit touretted. the drums roll along well, but shit just feels kind of stilted to me. the switchup in the center falls into place fucking marvelously though.
citizen - wooo. the intro is fucking cool as hell, but the drums and hihats kinda flatten out the anticipation. you definitely took things in a specific direction, props on finding the sound and making it stick to you. the drums are a little too electrified for my ears, no swing, only stutters. good shit though.
Digital Fiend - you rocked the break out, god bless those who aren't afraid to play shit for the duration. flipped the fuck out of the bassline, props due. this feels like some cool credit card commercial shit, if there is such a thing. capital two, or some'm.
e-styles - hm, this is muhfucking moody. the bassline kinda curdles up underneath everything, but in a good fucking way. the snap sounds really sweet sitting between the 1 and the 3, and the flute bounces off the mainline beautifully. provides a grand counterpoint. fuck, this kinda sounds like what i was trying to do. good money homie, definitely. the switchup is a little jarring, but the programming remainds fly.
henny - see, THIS is how you flip some shit. gotdamn homie. woo. some shit Can Ox would spend 16 dissing their respective mothers over. just wish you would've used a heavier snare, or thickened it up. beyond that, brilliant.
s.i. - MC's a little off. but the bassline bumps along good and well. indie as fuck postertrack, for better or worse. the reverse drums fill in that space really cool. not terribly memorable, but not at all terrible.
tayo - this is why you should never try and make 'n mix a track down on your laptop speakers. everything talks to each other, same language, same pitch, but none of the samples are listening to what's being said. better luck next time.
Master - ahhhh, i was wondering if anyone would rock that particular joint. the mix is definitely bidge, but the track itself is on some loosiefied Ugly Duckling shit, to my ears. well done on taking a different route, and walking it well.
Operator - fuck, PRETTY shit dude. the hihats are distracting and toothy, but beyond that this is maybe my favorite so far. i dig the chop, and everything just kinda makes sense, which is the most important thing about music, to me. bad nixon, but good money homie, definitely, good money.
Cadence - whoof. now this is fucking separate. your ears are so different from my own, dunno what to do with this really. like, it's out of tune but not irritating, well, the guitarline is definitely frustrating. in any event, the reversed snare and hat are fucking fresh., and the way you got the trumpets to stutter is dope medicine.
hiphop - fucking a. absolutely brilliant. dude. nothing to be said really, great fucking work. jebus. dunno how you make everything sound so...um, official, i guess. it ebbs and flows perfectly. great shit, straight up and down.
great work fellas, props again for participating and uber dap to has for putting it all together.

Thanks for the good Feeds, means alot
2root2: Nice atmospheric Intro, way too long for my taste tho,you had me scared that the whole tune was gonna be like that, and just when i thought it was,. BOOM here comes the beat,Nice man.,the drums are too loud for the atmosphericness of it tho,if they were softer in volume ,this would be very tight. i like it tho. Nice work
Citizen: Poundin,Hard Hittin,Nice change at 0:50 softens it up,then Bamm back to the hardness, sounds like it could be on some movie for a Chase scene,Just when you think the dudes gonna get caught,he does, then he doesnt, then he does, then he doesnt lol..Good work
Cadence: The Dig sample in the beginning is funny cool, sounds too Hmm, the only word i can think of is Fruity. Like some Hip Hop goes to hawaii type stuff lol..But i like it tho,its greatly put together. good job on the mix
Hennessee Williams: Sounds Like Trent Reznor helped you out on this one,has A NIN sound to it.Hmmm..I cant even think of what to call this one,Greatly Put together tho man..and the change at 2:09 was sweet .Good One man
Dont Got One: Sounds muddy,Vocals are great tho, keep that shit up man
E Styles: the Panning on this tune is pretty good man,One suggestion tho..try to get your Delay to go with the tempo of the overall tune,Trust me it makes a difference,a BIG difference,But anyway,I like that left to right in my headphones, good and StereoFied..were you trying to get Polyrythmic?.This ones cool.
Tay: Sounds like when a painter, gets a bucket of paint, and just throws it all over the place, not Knowing where its gonna land,A little too abstract,I like it tho,Nice One,i dont really know what to say actually lol ,but., Nice one
Unpredictability:Nice Straight forward, good sample,One that goes threwout the whole tune in one go,very cool, and then you Morph that shit at the end..Nice one
HipHopapotomus: Cool bring in the bass ,and then Bamm you bring it in,that was cool, the cutt off at the end, makes it lame, but thats thanks to the myspace stuff i guess ,i would have liked to hear this in its entirety, good Job.
Still Illiterate: The Mixing is too muddy,im not sure why the 2 with Vocals are soo muddy, maybe its my headphones, but i doubt it,because the rest of em were right on.Hmmm i dunno,i like it tho, keep that shit up on the mic.
Master: your page wont open for me

Big Ups to all, this shit was fun. I need more of these beat contests, they are the only way i finish a beat...I need a deadline.
By the way Tayo, great reviews dawg, they were thoughtful and funny.
2root2 - I see this as a dope score to a David Lynch flick. Very ethereal. I like this. Conceptually it worked.
dfiend - "expired"
Bizzle - "expired"
Sheik - Im feeling the sample/intro, not really feeling the way you flipped the instrumental samples though, pretty chaotic. Your probably on to something though.
Citizen - Very well done. Big bounce to the track, nice segueways. If anything the sequence might become formulaic, but i think it is pretty tight. I can't help but wonder what this would have sounded like a little slower.
Henessee - you little piece of shit you've failed again, i hate you. But forreal im not one for disclaimers or explanations but in regards to the comments about the "annoying" vocal samples, i can see what your saying, honestly, especially from an MC's perspective. I was however going for a more repetitive, militaristic, roll call, marching army-type-feel...to put it simply. I think the samples hot!
And yes, i fucked up that fade away major, it is the longest of all time haha. In anyways, i truly value all of your comments, thats why i love this site.
Master - You know i like this sample. Not really feeling the transition to the verse, pretty abrupt. But overall this is well done. Good flows player!
E-Styles - The reverse sample and the delays spar well with eachother. I like how you flipped it in the middle. Im just not a fan in general of the clarinet/flute sample.
Still Ill - Beat was a little boring. Rhymes were pretty dope dude, they were mixed well, and went well the beat. Can't complain.
Tayo - Laptop speakers definitely don't help any situation. But yo, those guitar chords that drops on those half notes on top of the first sample is RAW! You should have developed that idea a little more, that shit is pretty. I think you could have dropped everything but the drums out, and just played with those chords a little. Less is more! Just do you dawg, your shit is always tight.
Operator - To me this sounds like an interlude. Not much in the way of a crescendo or climax, but whatever i like it. Its got some soul and emotion. I apparently can't talk shit about extended vocal samples, but i dont really understand the idea or motive behind the nixon sample. Is there somekind of mea ning behind that? Regardless, i like this, it conveys an idea, a thought, fuck traditional sequencing, be progressive. Stay up!
Hip - Good Idea, Great executiuon! I've always been a fan of sped up kicks and drum rolls, that shit is sick! I really cant critique shit, your doiing your thing. This isn't exactly my cup of tea, a little drawn out, but whatever. I've been meaning to scope some of your other beats. Congrads!
Its hard for other producers to critique beats without just hearing how they would have done things differently. I hope people take my comments with a grain of salt, and try and grow. Im learing alot from everyones work.....Much Love!

I'll give every beat a review when I get back. Really solid entries all the way through though. Hippo and 2root really stood out to me though. Kudos to those two in particular.
And yeah, sorry my entry was shitty like some toliet paper. I didn't get shit done with the 5 day deadline. I was planning on putting some scratches on it but I didn't get with the head that was going to do it til to late. Oh well, I'll come strong on the next one, promise. props to all the beatmakers in PF though.
