EMCEE DARTH MALEK wrote:Though the article doesn't say, it seems like it'll be Def Jam material. Last real nigga alive part 2 was def recorded w/ them. That could be an unrelated aside that the journalist threw in. I would prefer to hear Columbia shit, but the def jam material would still be sweet. "Be a nigger too," "nigger hatred," "fear of mandingo," "life's gone low," original "hip hop is dead" title track, and whatever else we haven't heard of yet.
Yeah, from what I understand he'd have to pay out of his own pocket for the Columbia tracks, so most likely Def Jam only. There's still enough to make an amazing collection but it's a shame if politics and money get in the way of his older more diverse material from ever coming out. Really his career and catalogue is too big for that to happen.

Remember the sticker on the first Lost Tapes? "One of the most important writers of the 20th century" or something to that effect. That was on a Columbia record.... so let's see them do the right thing, if not now then eventually.

haha never saw that sticker.... I hope someone at the label believes that shit enough to put another volume out (I know I do). There's so much material that's up there with his very best that never came out... a couple times I got a pretty decent collection going but my hard drives don't last long.... then there's tracks like "tales from the hood," awesome song, that I've never heard without a DJ on there. Yeah I don't expect Nas to buy out Columbia on his old tracks, but they've got to see that whatever little overhead it takes them to put out an album of already recorded tracks is gonna be worth it.... hmm... I'm gonna go harass them by email....

no, I think Pete Rock is saying "finally" in reference to the fact that Nas has, after 18 years, finally forgiven him for fucking Carmen Hayes, Nas's first baby mother. Destiny is an adult now, and people make mistakes.

maybe they DO have a song from back in the day ready though. how ill would that be? very.

this news excites me too. I want them to play "The World Is Yours" at my funeral. :rockout:

Is that rumor even true?

And if the Pete Rock/NaS song wasn't from the vaults, then why is it on the Lost Tapes?

ask Magneto. but I'm pretty fucking positive it's truth. I interviewed Carmen Hayes and she didn't deny anything she wrote in her book... and in that book she says she slept with Allen Iverson, Pete Rock, Jay-Z and Nas, among a few others. It's pretty common knowledge. "Chocolate Boy Wonder" isn't just a cute nickname. Pete Rock probably has fucked a lot of hot women, no homo, LOL. I'm just sayin.

abso-fucking-lutely. "can't forget about you" is a god damn masterpiece and the uncut version of "hip hop is dead" is sick.

will.i.am is okay sometimes. lately he got wack again cause he wants to rule pop music. but he should just make music, he's got big promotion money no matter what. that shit he wore with Nicky Minaj was ridiculous at best. dude needs to see that his party pop is ruining his legacy, even if he is getting mega rich. he'll be the new Hammer if he don't get his integrity back soon.

you know rap is outta control when Nas's table scraps look like the one of the best albums of the year.

Supposed email by Nas to Def Jam bigwigs. Source is Bob Lefsetz newsletter.

A little birdie sent me the below e-mail with this note attached:

"In a nut shell he has an album titled 'Lost Tapes 2' that his fans have been dying to have since his first one came out in 2005. They seem to not understand the cultural impact the first one had. The album is done and now they are saying he can put it out but it won't count on his deal and they won't pay for it but still want all the benefits of a new nas album."

And here it is:

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SHIT OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY's slave. This is not the 1800's, respect me and I will respect you.

I won't even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don't connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist's dream and aspirations. You don't help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don't even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren't.... not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn't work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn't understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn't the 90's though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about "my label." I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason....... they believed in me. The didn't give a fuck about what any radio station or magazine said....those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It's smart and after 5 years it's still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I'm feeling is disturbing. Don't get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment.

You don't get another Nas recording that doesn't count against my deal....PERIOD! Keep your bullshit $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain't many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don't even have shit coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let's get money!

I believe it is Nas. And he's totally right. These execs have ruined the music industry, not just the rap industry. There is TONS of music just sitting on shelves that could be and should be released, and the only reason it is not, is because some executive says "this is not coming out until i say so. no release date for you" on some Soup Nazi shit. wack sauce.

you think any artist wants to sit on their songs for years? why not throw it out? these guys are paid to make music. they make lots of it. the labels are the ones trying to control the perception and career of the artist cause they think they know best. FUCK THAT SHIT. Nas spoke to them exactly how they need to be spoken to. Wake up, assholes.

I have been at a Def Jam/Universal listening party and heard amazing completed Nas songs that have never seen the light of day. This was years ago. Why haven't they dropped them? Scared money don't make money, and these people are in it for the money, not the love. It's just insanity.

Nas's Lost Tapes 2 is going to be one of the best albums of the year. Another truth, on top of the circumstances behind its delay, that proves:

Rap. Is. Out. Of. Control.
