Delmon Young for Matt Garza trade? WTF
Young is gonna be a beast. Garza is hype and unproven. Great move for the Twins if they pull this off.
The Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are close to a swap of two potential future stars.
The Twins would acquire outfielder Delmon Young in exchange for right-hander Matt Garza, sources told ESPN.com's Keith Law.
The potential swap was first reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, which reported the deal could involve as many as six players, with shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon going to Tampa Bay in the deal and shortstop Brendan Harris and outfield prospect Jason Pridie coming to Minnesota.
In addition to the Young deal, the Rays are also moving toward a deal to sign reliever Troy Percival, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports.
Young, 22, hit .288 with 13 home runs and 93 RBIs in his first full major league season. Garza, 24, was 5-7 with a 3.69 ERA in 15 starts for the Twins in 2007.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft, Young has struggled to keep his temper in check during his time in professional baseball. He received a 50-game suspension after flipping his bat into the chest of a Triple-A umpire in 2006, and was suspended three games by the Southern League for bumping an umpire while playing for Double-A Montgomery in 2005.
Young is the younger brother of Washington first baseman Dmitri Young.

in my mind this was a terrible move by the rays.
garza is far from proven,
and they have so many young pitching prospects with ceilings higher than his.
delmon young is going to be a beast,
no question.
i'm not even worried about his patience,
he's going to hit .300+ even if he doesn't walk enough,
he's just that good of a hitter.
he has elite prospect, superstar potential.
a potential franchise player.
garza is none of that.
i hate that they traded him,
but i'm glad it's to minnesota,
now i can watch him so much more.

Damn of all the Bats the Rays had in the OF i really thought Young would be the one they were least likely to trade. Really dont like this deal for the Rays as they lose a future superstar who could come into bloom as they rays get their young talent in the majors and start to turn things around over the next few years. This trade should really temper the excitement around here that the possible new stadium has stirred up.

August 1997: Twins trade Greg Colbrunn to the Braves for Mark Lewis. Greg proceeds to do nothing with the braves, but has 4 or 5 more years as a decent bench player for the Diamondbacks. Mark Lewis never makes a Major League roster.
August 1997: Twins trade Roberto Kelly to the Mariners for Joe Mays. Kelly plays good the rest of the season, has a few more good years as a 4th outfielder with the Rangers but is out of baseball in 3 years. Joe Mays joins the Twins starting rotation in 1999, has an excellent year in 2001 where he was one of the best pitchers in baseball, but was a below league average starter with injury problems the rest of his tenure with Minnesota.
August 1997: Twins trade Darrin Jackson to the Brewers for Mick Fieldbinder. Darrin Jackson is a sucky reserve outfielder who's out of baseball in 3 years. Fieldbender never makes the Majors.
Dec 1997: Twins trade Rich Becker to the New York Mets for Alex Ochoa. Becker, after 2 decent seasons as a starting outfielder with the Twins, goes thru 5 teams in 3 years afterwards as a bench player and is out of baseball in 3 years. Ochoa spends one season as a mediocre reserve outfielder with the Twins.
Dec 1997: Twins trade Greg Myers to the Braves for Steve Hacker. Myers, already a veteran, does nothing with the Braves but spends 8 more years in the bigs as a decent second string Catcher. Hacker never makes the Majors.
-------------------------------------------------
Febuary 1998: Twins trade Chuck Knoblauch to the New York Yankees for Brian Buchanan, Cristian Guzman, Eric Milton, Danny Mota and cash. Knoblauch has 4 full years with the Yankees, 2 of which were good but not as good as his Twins peak and 2 of which were mediocre and is out of baseball in 5 years when he's only 33. Buchanan joins the Twins in 2000 spends 2 and a half years as a pedestrian bench player with the Twins, a few more with some other teams and is out of baseball since 2004. Cristian Guzman joins the Twins in 99 and has 6 full seasons as a good fielding, but poor hitting starting shortstop, but makes the all-star team in 2001. Has had only one full season in the 3 years since he left the Twins. Eric Milton joins the club and the starting rotation in 1998, and has 5 full seasons with the Twins as a slightly above average starting pitcher. He's since had 3 seasons as a slightly below average starting pitcher since he left. Danny Mota ony pitches 5 innings in the majors.
July 1998: Twins trade Orlando Merced and Greg Swindell to the Red Sox for John Barnes, Matt Kinney and Joe Thomas. Merced does nothing with the Red Sox but spends 4 more years in Baseball as a decent reserve outfielder/ first baseman. Greg Swindell pitches well for the Red Sox and spends 4 years as a reliver for the Diamondbacks, 1 great season, 1 good one, one average and one poor. John Barnes never gets more than 50 at bats in 2 seasons for the Twins. Kinney was an ok starting pitcher for one and a half years with the Twins but hasn't been on a major league roster since 2005. Joe Thomas never makes the major leagues.
August 1998: Twins trade Mike Morgan to the Cubs for Scott Downs. Morgan does nothing for the Cubs. Spends one year as a below average starter for the Rangers, 3 as a pedestrian reliever for the Diamondbacks and retires in 2002. Scott Downs never pitches for the Twins.
Nov 1998: Twins trade Dan Naulty to the Yankees for Allen Butler. Naulty has one ok relief season with the Yankees and never pitches in the majors again. Butler never plays in the majors period.
Dec 1998: Twins trade Alex Ochoa to the Brewers for Darrell Nicholas. Ochoa spends 3 years as a good bench outfielder and one as an average starting outfielder. Nicholas never makes the majors.
-------------------------------------------
May 1999: Twins trade Rick Aguilera and Scott Downs to the Cubs for Kyle Lohse and Jason Ryan. Aguilera retires the following year. Downs has had a couple of good years as a reliever with the Blue Jays but does nothing for the Cubs. Kyle Lohse spends 4 years with the twins as a slightly below average starting pitcher. Jason Ryan pitches relief for the twins for 2 seasons then leaves baseball.
August 1999: Twins trade George Williams to the Astros for Josh Dimmick. Williams would only have 11 more major league at bats. Dimmick never makes a Major League roster.
Dec 1999: Twins trade Chris Latham to the Rockies for Scott Randall. Latham is out of baseball by 2003, never getting more than 100 at bats in a season. Randall never pitches for the Twins.
Dec 1999: Twins trade Jared Camp to the Florida Marlins for Johan Santana and cash. Jared Camp never makes a major league team.
----------------------------
July 2000: Twins trade Butch Husky and Todd Walker to the Rockies for Todd Sears and Cash. Husky is out of baseball the following year. Walker has had 6 seasons as a slightly above average starting second baseman. Sears plays 1 and a half seasons with the Twins and is out of baseball without reaching 100 at bats.
July 2000: Twins trade Mario Valdez to the Athletics for Danny Ardoin. Neither of whom do a got damn thing in their brief time in the majors.
September 2000: Twins trade Hector Carrasco to the Red Sox for Lew Ford. Carrasco has had 5 decent seasons as a reliever since, 2 of which were quite good but his half season with the Sox sucks. Lew Ford had one good year as a starting outfielder with the Twins but 3 as a pedestrian 4th outfielder since.
-------------------------
March 2001: Twins trade Chad Moeller to the Diamondbacks for Hanley Frias. Moeller has been a good fielding, very poor hitting reserve Catcher for 6 years since and is still in the majors but barely. Frias never plays for Minnesota.
July 2001: Twins trade Mark Redman to the Tigers for Todd Jones. Redman has since had a couple of good years starting, including one for a championship team, and twice as many mediocre seasons doing the same. Jones has a good relief year for the Twins, and 5 others since with other teams.
July 2001: Twins trade Matt Lawton to the Mets for Rick Reed. Lawton has 4 more years as a league average starting outfielder but was out of baseball by last year. Rick Reed is a starting pitcher for the Twins for 2 seasons. One above average, one below, than retires.
-----------------------------
July 2002: Twins trade Warren Morris to the Cardinals for Seth Davidson. Morris plays one half season (for the Tigers) and is out of baseball by 2003. Davidson never plays in the majors.
July 2002: Twins trade Brian Buchanan to the Padres for Jason Bartlett. Buchanan plays one and a half seasons as a reserve outfielder for the Pads but has been out of pro Ball since 2004. Bartlett is an decent fielding, ok hitting Shortstop with no power who's been starting for the Twins since last year.
November 2002: Twins trade Matt Kinney and Javier Valentin to the Brewers for Gerry Oakes and Matt Yeatman. Kinney has been out of Ball for 2 years. Valentin never plays for the Brewers but has had 5 years as a decent backup catcher with the Reds. Neither Oakes or Yeatman make the Major leagues.
----------------
July 2003: Twins trade Bobby Kielty to the Blue Jays for Shannon Stewart and Dave Gassner. Kielty spent two years as a part time outfielder with the Twins and played well. A lot of the "moneyball" teams thought he was very good though and tried to get him. He's been a good 4th outfielder at best since. Stewart played very well his first half season with the Twins and played well the next year too, but has been only average the last 3 seasons, the last of which was spent with the Athletics. Gassner was briefly with the club in 2005.
August 2003: Twins trade Juan Padilla, who pitches briefly and been out of the league for 2 years, to the Yankees for Jesse Orosco, who retired after the end of the year.
November 2003: Twins trade AJ Pierzynski to the Giants for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser. Pierzynski has been a slightly above average starting Cather in the 4 years since, but not quite as good as his brief few years with the Twins. Nathan has been one of the best relievers in Baseball in his 4 years with the Twins. Liriano was a very good starter in limited time in 2006. Bonser has had 2 years as a starter with the Twins one good and one poor. The Twins had drafted Joe Mauer anyway so basically anything they got for Pierzynski was a good thing.
December 2003: Twins trade Eric Milton to the Phillies for Carlos Silva, Nick Punto and Bobby Korecky. Milton goes to a slightly above to a slightly below average starter after leaving the twins. Silva has been a surprisingly strong starting pitcher for the Twins for 4 years despite the fact that he can only throw the ball 10 miles an hour. Nick Punto has been a starting infielder for the Twins for 3 seasons even though he can't hit at all. Korecky never made the majors.
December 2003: Twins trade Dustin Mohr, a reserve outfielder to the Giants for JT Thomas. Mohr has one good year with the giants but has been pretty mediocre ever since. JT Thomas has yet to play a major league game.
--------------------------
July 2004: As part of a complicated 4 team trade, the Twins send Doug Mientkiewicz to the Red Sox and recieve Justin Jones from the Cubs. Mientkiewicz plays poorly for the Red Sox, gets a ring anyway. And has spent the last 3 seasons as an excellent fielding, below average hitting part time first baseman. Justin Jones hasn't played a major league game yet.
-----------------------
December 2005: Twins trade Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler to the Marlins for Luis Castillo. Bowyer pitched less than 10 innings for the Twins in 2005. Scott Tyler has never played a major league ball game yet. Castillo had a good year and a half with the Twins.
December 2005: Twins trade JC Romero to the Angels for Alexi Casilla. Romero pitches poorly for the Angels but excellently the next year for other ballclubs. Casilla has had only one season as a middle infielder with the Twins where he hit poorly.
------------------------
June 2006: Twins trade Juan Castro to the Reds for Brandon Roberts. Castro played well in very limited time the rest of the year and poorly in limited time the next year. Roberts hasn't made the Majors yet.
July 2006: Twins trade Kyle Lohse to the Reds for Zach Ward. Lohse was pitching poorly that year for the Twins, but was a league average starter for the Reds the rest of the season, and the next seasDon. Ward hasn't played a major league game yet.
August 2006: Twins trade Adam Harben to the Cubs for Phil Nevin. Nevin, after playing well for the Cubs, plays poorly for the Twins and not at all in 2007. Harben has yet to play a major league game.
-----------------------
June 2007: Twins trade Levale Speigner to the Nationals for Darnell McDonald. Speigner pitches very poorly in 2007 for the Nats. McDonald bats .100 in 10 at bats for the Twins in 2007.
July 2007: Twins trade Luis Castillo to the Mets for Drew Butera and Dustin Martin. Castillo plays well for the Mets. Butera and Martin haven't played in the majors yet.
-----------------------
This is just looking at trades with other teams, not evaluating other personnel decisions like drafting, waiving and free agent signing. Overall I'd say the Twins organization has a slightly positive record on transactions over the last decade but nothing special. They certainly aren't getting "fleeced" by anyone but they haven't exactly been "fleecing" anyone else either.

Alexi Casilla should be a strong MLB player this year
Bartlett is roughly average hitting, above average fielding SS which is much much more valuable than Brian BuchananJuly 2002: Twins trade Brian Buchanan to the Padres for Jason Bartlett. Nathan has been one of the best relievers in Baseball in his 4 years with the Twins. Liriano was a very good starter in limited time in 2006. Bonser has had 2 years as a starter with the Twins one good and one poor. The Twins had drafted Joe Mauer anyway so basically anything they got for Pierzynski was a good thing.I think you are selling that trade short, MN raped the GiantsThis is just looking at trades with other teams, not evaluating other personnel decisions like drafting, waiving and free agent signing.
Buchanan plays one and a half seasons as a reserve outfielder for the Pads but has been out of pro Ball since 2004. Bartlett is an decent fielding, ok hitting Shortstop with no power who's been starting for the Twins since last year.

the FA, scrap heep guys they grab are whats terrible
They haven't had a really positive trade since '03 before this one.
Plus they let all their best players leave come free agent time as we all know.
Minnesota has done a lot with what they have, and are to be commended, but they have little chance of sustained success.
