Steely Dan

Post by Thun »

Sure, at a hip-hop related forum, one might expect to come across the odd mention of the highly successful intellectual soft/art rock duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (and their motley rotating team of session musicians and back-up singers of course) in the form of some know-it-all exclamation of the eternal illness of De La Soul "Eye Know" or Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz "Deja Vu" (both of which led to extensively damaging anti-rap litigation and neither of which are half as interesting as the songs they pilfered).

But fuck all that. This thread is for discussing the dark sarcasm and allusive density of their lyrics, the superlative smoothness of their arrangements, their technical virtuosity and perfectionism, whether or not Aja is on eof the greatest albums ever recorded, the true symbolic meaning behind "Black Cow," whether or not Peg was a porn star, etc. Feel free to note how the internet subculture dedicated to interpreting their lyrics is as nerdy, obsessive, and batshit loon as an average Mindbender post or disparage the duo as "soft faggot East Coast liberal pseudo-ironic Jewish jazz crap." Whatever you do, make sure to player-participate.

There was a time, a few years back, when i was smitten with "Aja". Well, when i say smitten what i really mean is obsessed. It's such a mesmerizing album. Wait, did that get any nominations in the G.O.A.T album tournament? We should all be tarred, feathered and made to sit through a HustleCrowe cdr if nobody mentioned it. Anyway, "Aja" is just a perfect album - it's pop but it's the most intricate, quirky and ambitious pop one will ever experience. "Josie"..."Josie"! If you've never been enchanted by "Aja" then you're a luddite faggot.

The best Steely Dan sampling was by M.F Doom.

Fun bit of trivia:

Chevy Chase was the dummer in Don and Wally's first band in college.

Fun fact:

Steely Dan fucking own.

Cant Buy A Thrill, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam and Aja all get steady play in Casa Del Blast.

My knowledge of this band is too small, but sizable enough to contain the facts that "Kid Charlemagne" and "Show Biz Kids" are dope songs.

And yet there's something about 3rd Bass sampling Steely Dan that's too pretentious even for me. Smooth though.

Here's 'Black Cow'...
And Peg...

And here's 'A Decade of Steely Dan'.

05 Bodhisattva.mp3
06 Hey Nineteen.mp3

I used to work with a guy from Boston who loved Steely Dan and he'd play this album all the time in the office. Its really at odds with everything I like in music generally - happy, note perfect, over produced, sax solos, really technically perfect, and sooo smooooth - but I started to get quite into them. But they're no Hall & Oates.

The reason Steely Dan gets a pass for the oversmoothness is because they balance out the smooth with lyrics about dirtbag creeps, prostitutes, incest, rape, existential horror, etc.

I have "Reelin in the Years" on one of my old NBA VHS tapes. It has various old school NBA highlights set to the track.

Word. We forgot to mention that they named themselves after a dildo in Naked Lunch by everyone's favorite drug-addled pederast, William S. Burroughs.
