The Hughes Brothers (Menace 2 Society, Dead presidents etc)

Post by drizzle »

So I'm a big fan, lets talk about their work

Menace 2 Society - A staple amongst the early 90's hood dramas. Up there with boyz n the hood? better/worse?

Dead President - very entertaining action/drama with some social themes. Some great acting, even in the smaller roles, from people who were virtually unknown at the time (Terrence Howard for example). Reminiscent of some of the better 'socially concious' action dramas of the 70's

Amerian Pimp - entertaining documentary which does a neat trick of simultaneously glorifying/appologizing for AND knocking down the pimp lifestyle. Interesting to note that this, along Pimp's Up Ho's Down (which i think actually shares some of the same footage) was made before the word pimp re-entered the mainstream vernacular in the way it's used now

From Hell - they got shitted on hard for this one, probably killed their carreer actually. I never thought it was that bad, it doesn't do justice to the graphic novel (which is more or less unfilmable as a feature anyway), just pure entertainment

discuss.....

Big fan as well, and they have great taste in music. At least I'm assuming it's them that played a big role in selecting the songs for the Menace II Society soundtrack as well as the Dead Presidents soundtrack.

Clockers > all 90's hood dramas. I think Menace is better than Boyz n the Hood, although Charles Dutton's parts are rele corny.
Dead President - very entertaining action/drama with some social themes. Some great acting, even in the smaller roles, from people who were virtually unknown at the time (Terrence Howard for example). Reminiscent of some of the better 'socially concious' action dramas of the 70's
Agreed; very underrated flick. Never seen American Pimp or From Hell.

Menace > Clockers

I remember hearing how they ended up having some kind of a tussle with Pac relating to that movie. I think he wanted to star in it or something.

And yeah, From Hell was dope despite it straying from Moore's work. What else is new in that regard anyway?

From Hell was shit, poorly acted, incoherent garbage... A shame compared to Moore's work.

But these guys still have something about them... I love me some Dead Presidents, a 'Nam film and a heist film in one, what more can ya ask!

Drizzle, you forgot to mention (understandably) the music videos they did for Korn.

Great Black directors. I just didn't particularly like From Hell because it plodded along and had some boring bits. But the imagery and storyline were both good.

i'm alluding to the fact that this was before things like Pimp my ride, and the word pimp developing a widespread semi-positive connotation within the mainstream society alluding to wealth, which it has today.

Why is clockers always being brought up now, anyways?

American Pimp is great. The new movie from the office space guy even jacks a direct line from it that was used by scarface.

icesickle keeps bringing it up, saying it's Spike Lee's "crowning' achievement. Clockers is a 6/10 movie at best.
I also thought From Hell was good.

 Can any of you meathead douchebags read? RBG is the one who says it's Spike's best film.

I think it's his 3rd best. I think it's better than Menace, which is a good film, and Boyz in the Hood, whose reputation has deteriorated more and more with each passing year. I brought it up in this thread because it's a "hood movie" like Menace. How you interpret that as "IT'S THE BEST MOVIE EVER DEWDS, WHOEVER DOESN'T LIKE IT IS A MEATHEAD DOUCHEBAG" is beyond me.

Definite co-sign of this,
Spike Lee lost the message of the book when he made it to a movie,
Best thing to come outta this was the Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers

Menace is a 90's classic, plain and simple
From Hell lost the buzz they had completely though, next thing F Gary Gray became the next big black director

For the final time: Read clockers and you will understand what a terrible terrible job spike lee did with bringing it to the big screen.
