Saw "Pan's Labyrinth" this evening...

It was good. Feels narratively unbalanced. Probably one of the more intense movies I've seen in a long while. Already want to see it again, but still didn't live up to the hype for me.

Saw it at Lincoln Center back during the film festival. The lady took me for my birthday. Del Toro was in the building. The chick who stars in this was in the building. Opened up with a short by some British woman. Called "Lump", I think. Terrible. People laughed afterwards. She tried to talk about its importance after the credits. People still laughed a little. Kind of cool to see a movie with so many fuckin' people in attendance. And yeah, it was really good, but I had much higher expectations for it. Didn't dive as deeply into the characters as I would've hoped. It's been awhile at this point. I recommend it for everybody, but we'll see.

such bullshit.. this was at the afi fest but as a late submission so it wasnt on any of the schedules or anything..so i never got to see it cuz i nver knew when it was fuckin playing...grr

Was anyone else disappointed by Hellboy? I mean, that movie had a shitload of potential and was great all the way up to the third act, where it floundered in shaky narration / editing.
Is this movie, in your opinion kind Captain, better or worse than Hellboy?

best new movie i've seen all year, although it's not exactly what's advertised
miles better than hellboy, that's not even really a fair comparison - apples and oranges really, this is a very dark and serious drama. regardless, it's def del toro's best movie to date
last time i checked it was 100% on rotten tomatos

Saw it today. Good movie. Too much Spain not enough Labyrthinth.
But yeah, like a 8/10.
Somebody art directed the absolute fuck out of this thing too. I mean, not an inch of space on screen is wasted. Quite beautiful most of the time. Lot of wipes too which I was surprised about.

^^^this is what i was trying to avoid telling you and everybody else so far, i was curious how people would react to this
the trailer really misrepresents it, the labyrinth part looks awesome but takes up collectively a total 30 mins tops from a 2 hr running time.
This movie is basically 30% narnia, 70% heavy preWW2 drama

The Narnia stuff would have seemed a lot, I don't know, more substantial if it wasn't for the fact that there's only like what, four creatures at most (two of which are all over the promotional material and one of which barely counts).
BUt yeah I knew going in that it was at least half Spain stuff, so that didn't surprise me too much.

honestly though, the only reason i regret there not being more fantasy shit is because it's so well done. another fantasy sequence would have been nice but i don't think it would've added anything more than just cool visuals or made a tremendous improvement. the labyrinth is the means here, not the end

Very much true.
I guess what I meant in my previous post was that I felt like a good portion of the wonder of the fantasy sequences had been spoiled for me. And I swear to you, I haven't been on this movie's nuts like that either, I haven't read much about it or seen many screencaps. Did you? Because I'm thinking like, if somebody was devouring every scrap of information they could find on this, it would probably really lessen the impact.
Also, did you get a Spirited Away vibe? Because I really did in the first half hour or so. I'm sure I'd be able to draw parallels to Spirit of the Beehive too, but I haven't seen that.

Yeah, the movie does have a range of tones going on.
Good stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, but I suppose that'll wait till dvd most likely. I also wouldn't mind seeing Del Toro put out a fancy schmancy multi-disc affair like with Hellboy.
Oh, and why not:
So Drizzle, fantasy or reality? Usually I err on the side of wanting to believe, but this time I pretty much chalked it up to the whole thing being in her head.

i'm really torn here, the best i can give you is this:
There are various plot points to nitpick, the chalk door for instance, the walls of the labyrinth parting in the end, the root under the door, but i think that would miss the point. I think it's actually meant to be both (if that makes any sense) actually, or the opposite side of the same token, purposefully ambiguous. The viewer is supposed to decide based on their own sense of whatever the fuck it is that makes you believe in fairies
My personal take.....I think it was real for her, not in the sence that it's all in her head but in the sence that something like that can only be real if you're willing to accept it. the captain didn't see Pan in the end not because he wasn't there necesseraly, but because the captain himself is not willing to believe it and therefore can't see it.
honestly, even rereading what i just wrote, i changed my mind like 10 times

shit, let me see.....
pretty much everything with the captain, especially the part with the shaving mirror, his 'backstory' and the look on his face in the end
the scene with the amputation where the patient asks for a second to see his toes for the last time
a lot of the doctor stuff, especially after he kills teh tortured soldier and then looks the captain dead in the eyes and admits it - the actor playing him really did well there
the concept and design for the paleman
the concept and design for teh faun - the fact that he's not some half-gay-half-hippy with horns and a british accent is tremendous
there's a lot more, that's what comes to mind immediately

Drizzle's in New York so he can pretty much see any movie in the world whenever he wants. I'm in Ireland right now, and I guess it opened here and the UK earlier than the states.

del toro was accepting some sort of award here, and some museum decided to do a preview screening. shit cost 18 to get in, worth every penny
