Andvil's DVD Picks for October 4th, 2005

wow!

what an incredibly shitty week for DVD's!
Still, there are a couple great things coming out today. But not much else.
Lots of super-duper-shitty stuff.
On with the show!!

(note: serious picks are ones with prices.)

The Fly: Collector's Edition (1986)
dir. David Cronenberg
Amazon.com - $13.99
DeepDiscountDvd.com - $14.64

Starting it off right this week. A classic.
Yes, this has been released before, but this version is just so much better it makes it seem like it's never been released.
TONS of extras.
Goldblum KILLS IT
As one Amazon reviewer put it, "Pretty Fly for a White Guy". Indeed!!!!
What a shitty reference!!

Amazon's description:
David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome) country, so expect The Fly to be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg's best films, and certainly one of the important movies of the 1980s.

DVD Features:
  • Available subtitles: English, Spanish
Available Audio Tracks: English (DTS 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo), Spanish (Dolby Digital 1.0)
    Commentary by David Cronenberg

    Number of discs: 2

Cinderella: 2-disc SE (1950)
dir. Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson
Amazon.com - $16.98
DeepDiscountDvd.com - $17.49

Another classic. One of Disney's best.
Who hasn't seen this? I dont think I need to explain myself.
There's some weird extras, though. On the rele.
ESPN Classic's Cinderella Stories?? Huh?

Amazon's description:
Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.
We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying.

DVD Features:
  • Available subtitles: English
Available Audio Tracks: Disney Enhanted Home Theater Mix (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 5.1), Spanish (Dolby Digital 5.1), restored original theatrical soundtrack
All-new digital restoration with enhanced picture and sound
From Rags to Riches: The Making of Cinderella
The Cinderella That Almost Was: documentary including newly discovered deleted scenes
    1922 Cinderella Laugh-o-gram
Reconstructed deleted songs: The Cinderella Work Song, Dancing on a Cloud
From Walt's Table: A Tribute to Disney's Nine Old Men
    The Art of Mary Blair
Storyboard to film comparison: The Opening Sequence
    Still frame and slideshow galleries
Excerpt from The Mickey Mouse Club with Helene Stanley (1/24/56)
    Original release and reissue trailers
    Cinderella and Perry Como
    Cinderella title song (audio only)
    Seven unused songs (audio only)
    Three radio programs
House of Royalty: Sally learns how to be a princess
The Royal Life: DVD-ROM design studio
    Princess Pajama Jam
Sneak peek of the all-new movie Cinderella III
    ESPN Classic's Cinderella Stories
All-new music videos: Disney's Circle of Stars "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Every Girl Can Be a Princess" featuring Disney's animated princesses
    Number of discs: 2

Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection
dir. Alfred Hitchcock
Amazon.com - $83.99
DeepDiscountDvd.com - $86.40

This set looks awesome.
14 classic movies for under $90, all digitally remastered.
Movies include::
Saboteur (1942)
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
Rope (1948)
Rear Window (1954)
The Trouble With Harry (1955)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
Vertigo (1958)
Psycho (1960)
The Birds (1963)
Marnie (1964)
Torn Curtain (1966)
Topaz (1969)
Frenzy (1972)
Family Plot (1976)

There's been speculation as to whether or not the discs in this set have been released individually...
I've been waiting for a review on the set to determine this.
I dont have them anyway, so what do I care.
Apparently the case that the movies comes in is velvet. OOoooooo. (awesome)

Amazon's description:
Masterpiece indeed. With 14 films, each supplemented with numerous documentaries, commentaries, and other bonus materials, Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection will be the cornerstone for any serious DVD library. Packaged in a beautiful, conversation-starting velvet box, the individual discs inside come four to a case, decorated with original poster art.
No doubt opinionated fans will argue about what should fall under the rubric of "masterpiece" in Hitchcock's body of work, but with the bona fide classics Vertigo, Psycho, and The Man Who Knew Too Much, there's plenty of timeless movie magic here. Eye-popping transfers and gorgeous sound make this set one of the must-have releases of the year.
Should the Hitchcock fan have the energy for more after imbibing on the movies themselves, a bonus disc provides additional documentaries. These include a revealing interview in which the master of suspense discusses, among other things, how much he dislikes working with method actors, going so far as to name names (we're talking about you, Jimmy Stewart and Montgomery Clift). In an American Film Institute lifetime achievement ceremony, the master of suspense is praised by the likes of Stewart and Ingrid Bergman, and seems to be suffering from severe boredom as celebrities pile on the flattery. Then Hitchcock opens his mouth to accept the award, delivering an endlessly witty stream of perfect bon mots that prove once again that he was a master of high comedy as well. Revealing documentaries about the making of Psycho and The Birds round out the feast of extras. The 36-page booklet, filled mostly with stills and poster art, provides little new information about the films.

DVD Features:
  • All 14 films are digitally re-mastered.
Amazing star power spanning over three decades in Hollywood including James Stewart, Paul Newman, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Doris Day, Grace Kelly and many, many more. (ed.: how is this a feature?)
All-new bonus disc showcases Hitchcock's films, career and legacy.
    Ultra-premium velvet packaging
    36-page collectible book
    14 documentaries and 9 featurettes, including: The Story of Frenzy; Plotting Family Plot; The Trouble With Harry Isn't Over; The Makig of The Man Who Knew Too Much; Obsessed with Vertigo; Newsreel Footage: The Release of Psycho; Saboteur: A Closer Look; Beyond Doubt: The Making of Hitchcock's Favorite Film; Rope Unleashed; Rear Window Ethics: An Original Documentary; The Birds Is Coming; The Trouble with Marnie; Torn Curtain Rising; Topaz: An Appreciation by Leonard Maltin;
    Storyboards
    Production photographs
    Theatrical trailers
Bonus Disc: AFI Salute to Alfred Hitchcock; Masters of Cinema: Alfred Hitchcock; All About The Birds; The Making of Psycho
    Number of discs: 16

That new Fly DVD looks sweet. Definitely a classic.

I rememeber one Saturday afternoon when I was about 9. I was flipping through the channels and landed on The Fly. It was right when Goldblum was in full fly mode and he barfed on that guys severed hand. WHOA

Let me pick up a little slack.

Don't know much about it, but there's enough Campbell fanboys in the world that somebody probably cares about this.

Likewise, more campbell... Image

Hm, I wonder who's right. DVDA says that all the criterion samurai stuff is coming out tomorrow. Amazon says (and has been saying) that it's coming on Oct 25th. Hm.

Still though, the DVDA list did mention that a Harry Palmer movie is coming out tomorrow.

the title rang a bell, but the cowboy reference brought it home. It has been a decade plus since I have seen this. Might have to hit up blockbuster.
