I re-visited both of these recently and I think they are both superb Scorsese masterpieces but I do think personally that Casino is the better film and DeNiro should have gotten an Oscar for his Ace role.

You?

Casino for me. While Goodfellas own I've seen a lot of similar movies. Casino was just a unique experience with better acting and more intense dialogue and character-relations.

vice grip & pen scenes are amazing.
but you can't compare them to the restaurant steady cam or shine box scenes for just 2 examples.....

I think this is how I feel. Ackbar hit the nail on the head though. Goodfellas is way more iconic and the dialog is unfuckwitable.

Casino and its not even close.

Goodfellas is a good movie, obviously. But when you're as non-dago as me, it's hard to give a fuck about it. If you're dago, part-dago, or dago-sympathetic, you'll probably disagree.

Casino has no Ray Liotta, a more interesting story and aesthically pleasing location. It also has pretty much the best use of non-score music in a movie ever, a sexier female lead, one of the most disturbing sequences in the history of cinema when everybody's lives are falling apart, and has the most breathtaking pacing in a movie i've ever seen to the point that i came out dizzy when i saw it at the flicks in 1995.

It's just everything great about Goodfellas, but slightly improved.

Goodfellas by a mile.

I can't watch Casino that often, but I can watch Goodfellas all the time.

I am part dago, so Thun's theory is correct.

I agree with this, had Casino come out first everyone would be saying it is the more iconic film... I hate to break it to you guys, but there is a reason you end up watching casino more.

The problem is that alot of people here identify way too strongly with pseudo-Italian-ism as away to circumvent the reality of their blinding whiteness.

Since Goodfellas came out first, it was the one (Illmatic) that restored our faith in mafia movies. Not since Godfather Pt. 2 has there been a mobster movie that was fascinating from beginning to end. Casino is perfect too and just last week I had to sit through the whole thing when it came on Starz. Nicky Santoro is the greatest role Pesci ever had. One of the best roles in movie history, PERIOD.

Get this through your head you Jew motherfucker, you. You only exist out here because of me. That's the only reason. Without me, you, personally, every fuckin' wise guy skell around'll take a piece of your fuckin' Jew ass. Then where you gonna go? You're fuckin' warned. Don't ever go over my fuckin' head again. You motherfucker, you.

Woods, Rickles, King and Vincent were all treats, although Kevin Pollack always annoyed me in his role. Never liked him as an actor.

Still, go rewatch Goodfellas. It's not nearly as convoluted but has all the aesthetics.

Jimmy Conway being half mick/dago. The killer role Paul Sorvino had. The Jew and her Jew parents meddling in their affairs. The acceptance of the goomahs (did I spell that right?). Henry Hill was and still is a great story. This movie exposed the Mafia as the fraternity they are.

This.

Casino is overlong and rehashes some of Goodfellas' characters (Pesci, for example) and some of its themes. Goodfellas flows better, doesn't have any lulls, and has a much more likeable cast of characters:

Lorraine Bracco's Karen Hill is infinitely less annoying than Sharon Stone's Ginger. Jimmy Conway isn't a douche like Ace Rothstein either.

People talk about the Copa sequence a lot, but the bravara sequence in Goodfellas to me is when Henry Hill tries to lose the helicopter and goes around running errands. That shot where he slams on the brakes and it cuts to his tired, coke addled eyes is :ohsh:.

They're both classic movies to me but I cant say I agree with the majority's comments here. I just preferred Goodfellas more than Casino. Ray Liotta made Goodfellas gel together much more than the various narrations in Casino, not to mention his performance as an empathetic Henry Hill was intrinsic to the craziness of DeNiro & Pesci. The scenes involving Henry's fateful day to his downfall, (helicopters, sauce stirring, babysitter's hat) really brought home how hectic his mobster life was so well, that I kind of felt sorry for the dude, and these were guys who would have fucked anyone over without a moment's hesitation. Liotta should have been Hollywood elite status after that. I could go on about the ruthlessness of Jimmy Conway being far more appealling than the wussiness of Ace Rothstein but you get the picture. Goodfellas all day everyday for me.

Goodfellas is better but not by much. I think the scale-tipper is Ray Liotta. Like Spartan said, Liotta's character made the movie gel together much better.

That being said, Nicky Santoro is one of the most thugged out roles ever. Plus the part where he takes the stripper out to the backseat for a blowjob while explaining about the qualities of good veal is hilarious.

goodfellas is superior. easily a top 10 movie of the 90s. casino is like top 30 maybe.

goodfellas did what no other american movie in the genre attempted (or at least pulled off successfully) at this point - it humanized the mafia. it knocked the concept down from some mythical larger than life nefarious entity to a much more realistic idea of a bunch of guys who might live next door and are kinda fuckups who are perpetually half a step away from disaster. casino is actually somewhat regressive in that sense.

beyond that it's also one of the most influential movies made in the last 20 years or so, both in the narrow scope of mob oriented fare and in a larger sense of movie trends in general.

lol at whoever said the acting in casino is better, pesci overacts like a motherfucker. this is indicative of the fact that casino is generally kinda overplayed, at points almost bordering on cartoonish. it makes for great entertainment value, but not a better movie.

your first point goes back to my point about if Casino came first. Your second point is subjective considering Karen Hill is an absolute retarded terrible fucking character and is just as much a wet blanket as Sharon Stone... I think Casino plays up the angle more of how Ace lets Ginger destroy his life while Karen is just a fucking screaming at the top of her lungs douche bitch...
