I've never knowingly heard one of their songs, but "And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead" is a decent name.

Yes, a solid name for sure.
They and I Love You, But I've Chosen Darkness are from Austin. I can only assume they're embroiled in a bitter, if informal, game of band name oneupsmanship.

the cankles
people show up to shows thinking we're experimental punk and it turns out to be what we is and they usually throw buttons at us from off of their jean jackets, and these buttons are highly political or sexual in nature

Most "local" bands here in Austin appears to be involved in this game.
Reading the club line-ups in the Chronicle here is comedy. I'll grab the most recent issue on my lunchbreak and return to thread.
Stay tuned.

I just realized I have heart a "trail of dead" song, it's on mlb 2005 for the xbox and it blows.
One of my friend's bands when I was in HS (they were mostly college kids) was named "Billy Blank and the Radar Boys"... I like that one.

I'm partial to "The Brian Jonestown Massacre".
clever but ultimately quite descriptive of the sound.

Yes, the "Shirley Temple of Doom" Early-90's-Semi-Wheel-Of-Fortune-Inspired-Oh-So-Clever-Combination-Band-Name is/was the quite amusing/annoying trend.

I agree with Smashing Pumpkins.
I always thought Sublime was an awesome name, but I honestly cannot say if that is just because I love them.
Really, if it came down to it, I'd probably say:
The Beatles
