I need some ideas for one to purchase. Looking for something under $500 that's durable, compact and has dope picture quality...

I have the same camera. I would recomend a canon digital elph. Check out dpreview.com tons of info that can help you out.

we have a pentax ist ds which is a digital slr and a panasonic lumix fx 7 which is more like what you're looking for... compact, pocket size... it's a few years old though. they have newer models out now.

i wouldn't hesitate to reccomend a lumix. i believe they still use leica lenses which are high quality and they have that image stabilization magic. been happy with the photos from it and use it sometimes when we want something worry-free (the dslr takes next level photos but it takes a lot more space and more effort).

i second the recommendation of dpreview.com

great site
