I can understand if they aren't your cup of tea, I thought the visual soliloquy's were well executed even if most lacked an establishing shot prior to the scene. The Afronaut wrote:^^^I think that was the point HM was making in response to Tweak.
@Tweak -- No doubt re: the marvel formula. And I can get down with Synder trying "something new" in terms of a approach. Also I read the article you linked re: the Knightmare scene, which I'd heard and think is cool, BUT none of that means Synder didn't miss the mark on his ambitions.
There's no way I should have to do this much research to "get" BvS. And I again if I'm having to do this much I cannot imagine what the average movie goer thinks.
All and all my biggest complaint is just the jagged (even if purposely) storytelling. I'm all about mysteries that get wrapped up later (was a big Lost fan) but there wasn't enough solid story to justify the convoluted/convenient storytelling.
And I generally find Greek plays to be overrated.

I honestly don't think it was that bad, guys.
I definitely can see why it angered a lot of people though. Expectations and all. That i did see it so close after Man of Steel helped prep me for the disjointed nature of the editing. I think this is what Snyder thrives on doing. He thinks he's honoring the intelligence of the typical cbf by cutting to the chase so quickly, but his creative licenses end up insulting slightly. Ok so you're gonna combine dark knight returns and the doomsday plotline plus set up justice league? Give yourself some time to breath, Zack. The impatience of filmmaking really is pretty obvious here.
I love me some Amy Adams but goodness her Lois Lane in both films has been insufferable. Am i somehow missing the point of her existence being that it's solely to do things in which she needs saving? I don't recall Margot Kidder being that omnipresent, but i also dont recall those films painting her as that completely helpless.
6.5/10. Fight scenes were on point. Eisenberg did well. Affleck's Batman was underwhelming.
I didnt realize Cyborg was at all relevant outside of teen titans. Zuh?

A few years ago, DC decided to cut Martian Manhunter out of the Justice League and put Cyborg in instead -- to make it more "diverse" (Because a black guy apparently represents diversity more than a green martian who can shapeshift into any race/gender, and all the other [white] heores are too "iconic" to get rid of).SYM wrote:I didnt realize Cyborg was at all relevant outside of teen titans. Cause it would've been a white guy in a martian suit.Hobus Maguire wrote:A few years ago, DC decided to cut Martian Manhunter out of the Justice League and put Cyborg in instead -- to make it more "diverse" (Because a black guy apparently represents diversity more than a green martian who can shapeshift into any race/gender, and all the other [white] heores are too "iconic" to get rid of).SYM wrote:I didnt realize Cyborg was at all relevant outside of teen titans. I already have a picket sign prepared if they tried that shit.

I was scrambling for what to say about this movie (I just watched it tonight), but I think this concise sentence pretty much covers it. Everything just felt rushed. Which is funny because the movie was almost 2 and a half hours long. I liked the fight scenes but thought the story was pretty silly. During the entire run of the movie, I was privately musing on why western culture these days has such a fetish for individuals in clown suits and tights. How many superhero movies are coming out this year? 50?SYM wrote:The impatience of filmmaking really is pretty obvious here.

Saw BvS again last weekend. After a week full of research of articles by DC peeps an editorials an shit, I "got" it slightly more.
It still has the issues I cited before but was slightly more enjoyable with my expectations managed.
This was particularly helpful re:Eisenberg. He really went in on his performance. After I let go of who I understand Lex Luthor to be, it was easier to see that silver lining I guess.

Not just western culture. Shit's huge in china too, to the point that studios change or add scenes to some a la Iron Man 3ChaMerZ wrote:I was scrambling for what to say about this movie (I just watched it tonight), but I think this concise sentence pretty much covers it. Ultimate Cut is up there with Midnight Special as the best film I've seen all year.

Didn't watch the theatrical cut, but I checked out the ultimate edition. Didn't think it was great and Eisenberg was poorly miscast, but I was entertained by the sheer spectacle of it all. Don't get why this was singled out with such revulsion compared to so many other comic book movies guilty of making similar mistakes.

Re: Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - March 25, 2016
Watched this over the weekend too. The Theatrical cut must've been horrifically butchered, this one was far more coherent and better than I expected based on the reviews.
This still wasn't good, but you can see the good ideas right under the surface, getting buried in too much plot and trying to do too much to set up a franchise. I think there's real potential somewhere in what MoS and BvS tried to do with these characters, they just wont let it breathe and develop right. Instead they're trying to compete with MCU while thinking they can keep riding the cultural cache Nolan gave them by sloppily adapting bits and pieces of prestige titles like DKR and Death Of Superman while Snyder tries to ape Nolan and scrape the last bits of Watchmen resin for just one more hit.
Superman as an alien uncertain of how he fits in, instead of half American god half nerd, is dope. Trying to find his place in a world that half-celebrates and half-fears him is even better. Aging disillusioned Batman snapping after 20 years of futile crime fighting culminates by watching aliens destroy half a city is dope. Recounting his past career in flashback while watching him become more violent and paranoid in the present would be amazing - imagine if instead of the same old 'hole filled with bats' we START with a flashback of Joker killing Robin, which is further referenced and explained when they show Robin's suit later. Then with all this set up, have the two of them fight as a climax of the movie and in the denouement start to position them toward a partnership based on being on two different sides of the spectrum. Meanwhile Luthor is monitoring all this in the background and realizing the world is shifting into bigger stakes with bigger powers, and trying to take advantage of it - also dope. Even the nightmares/Flash thing, as a way to setup possible future titles, could be great. It's not hard to imagine it condensed into a post-credits scene that hints at other JL members as well.
You can do all this without insanely convoluted conspiracies, or awkwardly inserted Wonder Woman, or Doomsday as a nonsensical CGI monster that has no reason to exist, or the Meta-Human slide show, etc etc etc etc

I keep remembering and laughing about how this very serious attempt at deconstructing the superhero mythos had a 80s type training montage showing Batman doing pullups with a weighted belt

Re: Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - March 25, 2016
serious though. there is awesome shit here. but Snyder walks a knifes edge. that is the problem. he really skillfully ballets on that edge like a fucking princess ballerina but then fucking falls off half the time and he chooses to hoist motherfucker up there again instead of just making a dope scaled down movie. this movie would have been 100 times better if they just focused more and scaled down more. this movie was like a pornography money shot compilation. I don't fucking want to watch that. and definitely not when the material is mostly about this other shit.Superman as an alien uncertain of how he fits in, instead of half American god half nerd, is dope. haven't even watched dawn of justice yet (nor have i watched the earlier superman joint), but justice league looks dope as shit. the perks of not casting grant gustin dudes flash outfit is horrendous, but he seems to fill the role a-okay.
