Truly Grim Movies

Post by FreshShabazz »

What are the most depressing, nihilistic, loveless, not-warm-and-fuzzy movies of all-time?

I am a fan of movies that make you feel like absolute shit. I love nothing more than walking out of a theater and hating myself and humanity more than I already do. Being depressed by films is tops.

So list 'em up. What movies are truly grim? Peace to my homie Cas for the thread idea...

Last House on the Left
Se7en

and while it's not exactly grim (along the lines of what I think you're wanting here), Menace 2 Society is one of the most nihilistic movies I've ever seen

Any movie where that ends with coerced self-sodomy and amputation have to be on the list.

Image

Nothing good happens to this kind hearted woman... Von Trier is a cold, cold man.

Image

Much more grim than Happiness. Boy, does Solondz hate his roots or what?

Image

A pretty shitty outlook on life/the world/people when you think about it.

Image

An astute look at how shitty Americans are. Lars own this category.

the one with Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen where they all cheat on each other and talk about how each others cum tastes etc...I don't recall exactly how it ended but I think it was grim...

im with u. i thought crumb was pretty depressing, even if its hilarious...i mean...dude's brother offed himself...and to see the lifestyle he lived...pretty sad.

i also think that bergman owns this category. watch cries and whispers (if you can..i know plenty of people that said they couldnt finish it or would NEVER put themselves through that movie again).

This movie is so bugged out to me... such an average noir at first and then becomes all kinds of weird in the second half.

Good pick.

Really don't see how this hasn't been nominated. Y'all must really hate Jesus, lol:

Image

Sherm already put up some of the best nominations (Solondz and Von Trier own this list), but here's some more:

Image

Sweet Sixteen - In the first thirty minutes the 16 year old protaganist sells shots of vodka to 8 year olds to make ends meat and gets beat up by his mother's boyfriend and his grandfather on the side of the road for not smuggling heroin to his mom when they go to visit her in prison.

But in terms of grimness, nothing can compare with this film:

Umm Carlito's Way always leaves a bad taste in the mouth at the end.

Agree with the other choices, especially The Passion.

How about Night Of The Living Dead?

Spider's a really grim, depressing film as well.

If we're including [psuedo] documentaries there's this film that came out either last year or the year before that should have this thread on lock. It's about this guy who made a film from his personal diary about his drug abuse and his relationship to his mother, who he saw get raped when he was a kid. Anyone know what movie I'm talking about? It's supposed to be one of the most depressing films of all time, especially because it's a true story.
