har har. an overrated song in a slighly overrated movie. still better than taxi driver!Philaflava wrote:but Fight The Power was in DTRW, so which way are you voting?RacquetballGangsta wrote:what is the obsession with taxi driver? i really dont get it. its definitely not a BAD movie by any stretch..but what the hell...its not THAT great either.
People overrate it because of its subject matter. It also gets overrated by anti-social, borderline sociopaths...and we're on the internet; so.... It's a great film, but it's not in Scorcese's top 3 (not even touching Goodfellas or Raging Bull).RacquetballGangsta wrote:what is the obsession with taxi driver? i really dont get it. its definitely not a BAD movie by any stretch..but what the hell...its not THAT great either.
The bolded part sez hello mr. pot, i'm mr. kettle but basically yer right here. No shit it isn't top 3, though. It isn't even a top 6 Scorsese flick.Ithithkle wrote:People overrate it because of its subject matter. It also gets overrated by anti-social, borderline sociopaths...and we're on the internet; so.... Uh, I'm not anti-social at all. And your confused Bad Boy streetball playing closet racist ass has a lot more sociopathic tendencies than me hoss.I Drive A Lexus wrote:The bolded part sez hello mr. pot, i'm mr. kettle but basically yer right here. It's not just socially relevant, it's artistically relevant. Taxi Driver's dated; DTRT is still fresh. And art can be important because of its social relevance. Uncle Tom's Cabin isn't a great book in and of itself, its great because of its a milestone of social protest. DTRT is in that same category, but its also a milestone film from an artistic standpoint as well.btown wrote:LOL at evaluating at a film on how socially relevant it is today. No, but how's that that kool aid taste?Let it be known that I'm a big fan of DTRT but to say that Taxi Driver isn't a top 3 Scorsese film is ludicrous. Top 3 Marty is Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.
Did I say that everyone that voted for Taxi Driver fitted into that category? And while JBL cracked jokes, he said "but basically yer right here." Learn how to read.KoC is a stellar film but to say that only idealistic pre-emptory Miami-bred faggots who only count money and are fans of gangster-only-Scorcese would vote for Taxi Driver is the opinion of reactionary, hyperbolic, anti-social faggots from DC. Lexus' comparison was spot on.

tell that to every motherfucker who shoots a reflection of a red light on wet concrete, uses ambiguous dream sequences, or makes movies about alienated loners. NOBODY does that AT ALL these days, nadaIcesickle wrote: Taxi Driver's dated
It's themes aren't dated; the movie looks dated. And if I want a movie about alienated loners I'll take King of Comedy. Much more nuanced performance by DeNiro, a better script, better direction, and it holds up better with time.drizzle wrote:tell that to every motherfucker who shoots a reflection of a red light on wet concrete, uses ambiguous dream sequences, or makes movies about alienated loners. Sarcasm aside, alienation (especially the kind that ends in violence), can never be dated - it's a universal theme in cinema since the first shots were put to stock, and it will still be around when people are dowloading 3d holograms about shit to their frontal lobes, because it's part of the human condition (big emofor me on this one). There will ALWAYS be people who feel they don't fit into the society around them, and will in responce lash out at that society in retribution.
DTRT on the other hand captures a culturally specific moment in time, a time capsule - something that by its very definition stands to loose impact on the viewer as time goes on. Would you pick DTRT if you weren't a culturally aware hiphop fan living in the late 20th/early 21st? There's no doubt that 20/30 years from now it will still be a powerful film, in the way that anything dealing with WW2 atrocities is still powerful now - but can you honestly say Schindler's list has the same impact on you as it does on somebody who lived throught he holocaust?
