My PS2 Freezes and Makes Weird Noises...
It doesn't seem to be something that a CD lens cleaner could fix, although I haven't tried that yet. Who do I send it in to? Would it be cheaper to just buy a used one?
This happened to my old one a while ago. It stopped playing non-DVD discs (ie any blue/black back discs) and would just freeze up/make horrible grinding noises all the time. Seems to be a common problem with PS2s.
There are lots of FAQs you can get on the net about cleaning the lens DIY style with a Q-Tip and a can of compressed air, seems to work for a lot of people but it didn't do shit for mine. Also, your warranty gets invalidated as soon as you break that yellow sticker on the back...
...which means that you can't send it back for the (to my knowledge) free repair service that Sony offer. They don't do this here in the UK but as far as I know, if you call up Sony customer service or whoever in the USA then they'll pick it up off you and repair/replace it for you.
OR, like me, you could get your house robbed and claim a brand new slimline PS2 for free, whoop. And while you're at it you might as well get 10 games you never owned and a multitap and 4 controllers. You deserve it.

Depending on how old it is, you could just take it back to where you bought it from and demand a new one.For technical assistance with the PlayStation 2, PS one, or PlayStation in the U.S. & Canada, please contact SCEA Consumer Service at 1-800-345-SONY (7669) Monday - Saturday 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM PST and Sunday 7:00 - AM 6:30 PM PST in order to thoroughly troubleshoot your problem and for us to assist you.
