How the hell do light guns work?

Post by The Red Scare »

ya know, the gun controllers used for shooting games...how the fuck do they work on regular TVs? how does the game know you're pointing at the right place on the screen? I suppose the technology can't be that complex, because its been around since the Duck Hunt era...

Someone please explain this to me, it has perplexed me to no end :!:

The gun shoots a beam of infrared light at the TV screen which bounces back into the gun. The angle of the incoming light beam determines where your "shot" falls on the screen.

I think.

(Actually I kind of just made that up, but it makes sense).

Ahhh, that explains why there was a flash with a box around the duck when you shot in Duck Hunt.

If you shot a beam of light at your TV, it's highly unlikely it would bounce back at the gun.
