" Now I think Iגd be right in saying that weגre all lamenting the state of hiphop at the moment, harking back to the days when you could really get tingles down the back of your neck listening to Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Tribe or De La. The Nonce (excuse the name) were two friends Yusef Afloat and Nouka Basstype and were dropping beats גn rhymes from ג92 up until ג98, coming to a head with their absolutely killer גWorld Ultimateג album released on Rick Rubinגs American Recordings label. Sadly the story came to an end in 2000 when Yusef was found dead alongside a freeway after committing suicide ג apparently he had led a very sad life and this was the only way he could deal with it. These recordings are collected from the duoגs immense session tapes and youגd be hard pushed to hear that they were never intended for laying down as a full-length proper. With the soul of Tribe Called Quest, the crunch of Digible Planets and the attitude of the street they remind me of a time when hip-hop was something to get excited about. You remember going into a shop and dropping that needle down, hearing the crisp beat, low slung bass and passionate rhymes ג although that time has now passed we are lucky thereגs still a wealth of גlostג material waiting to surface. HipHopVinyl have come out with a stone cold classic album here and if youגre into hip hop ג and I mean REAL hip hop then you owe it to yourself to give this a spin."
