Groups like The Pharcyde?

Post by Jaz »

I am fortunate enough to get a support slot for these legends in my city next month and I have been going through tons of music (records, CD's and MP3s) and I was just wondering what other groups had the same sort of sound and vibe?

Some I can think of are...

Souls Of Mischief
Yall So Stupid
Da Phylava
Native Nutts
The Wascals
Down South
Y Society
The Beatnuts
Da King and I
ATCQ
De La Soul
Jurrassic 5

DVS and tREBLEFREE aka The Waldorf and Statler Experience sound like a throwback to the free creative spirit that I hear on The Pharcyde's 1st and 2nd albums. The lyrics are witty, humorous and entertaining with beats that rely on samples and looping.

Thirstin Howl reminds me of The Pharcyde in his honest, comedic and shame-less approach towards speaking about life on "I Still Live Wit My Moms". I think the song is underrated in that regard because most of Hip Hop seems afraid to be that honest, which is one reason why The Pharcyde stand out so much as a group.

I think Kwest could've been the 6th member of The Pharcyde.

i was just about to say them.

them and the boogiemonsters were prolly my favorite crews out of the these groups that jacked the pharcyde's steez like the b.u.m.s., anotha level, y'all so stupid, wascalz, etc.

their lp has some bangers on it.

"hey lookaway"
"get with you/rather be wit you"
"baby"
"curse of the q"
"dem joints"
"you don't understand"

those cats repped D.C. nicely IMO.

yeah that dereliks track just came into my head as I was posting the anotha level... 'I am A Record' off that EP is a great track too..

Another Level did a track with pharcyde on the b-side to What You Sayin. and it didn't appear on any of dirt_dog's "phun packs" so Im guessing a few people might not know it

Circa 93 was some group that had some very Pharcyde-ish sounding song, something having to do with an ice cream type or flavor. I cannot for the life of me remember it ... ring a bell for anyone?

I wanna say yes, but then I think I'm mixing it up with the Blvd Connection song.... it was a really over the top Pharcyde-ish song. Pretty annoying if you ask me.

even in your first post there are groups like ATCQ or the Beatnuts whose sound I personally wouldnt at all describe with "like the Pharcyde" but i guess i get where you'Re going at.

and somehow
Lords of the Underground
Bush Babees
Poor Righteous Teachers 2nd or 3rd album (although most of their content is more serious)
Organized Konfusion 1st Album
black eyed peas when they called themselves Atbann klan
jurassic 5's unified rebelution
early freestyle fellowship
Mos Defs 1st group urban thermo dynamics
alkaholiks on their first album
the Afros
Zimbabwe Legit
Zhigge
Yaggfu Front
jemini the gifted one cants stop rockin or funk soul sensation

all could be a little bit like what you're lookin for

the songs below always reminded me a little bit of the Pharcyde

Don't forget the Colored Section of Bomb MC fame. Y'all remember when we would almost proudly put the Black Eyed Peas in this category?

AND y'all are being totally :omgracist: by not mentioning Brian Austin Green.

I have my divshare account set to allow downloading, maybe it's messing up because I stopped paying them a while back.
Anyways, the whole EP is dope, worth copping. There should be a link to the EP out there. I still don't think it's sold out yet tho sadly, people sleep.

Nah man, if you heard their lp they were too hardcore to be considered pharcyde knockoffs. They seemed like the type of dudes thay would beat you up for saying such a thing.

Aside from their attempts at a radio joint, those L.I cats were pretty raw.

99th Demention
SleeStackz

maybe Strugglin Souls
maybe World Renown
maybe 3 Steps From Nowhere
maybe Animal Pharm
maybe Blaque Spurm
maybe Ill Biskits

Iono, the main & obvious ones alrdy been said. But some of the answers I don't really agree with, regardless, maybe this list'll be of some slight help.

not sure I agree with all of the suggestions either but then again the pharcyde sound isn't limited to one style. bizarre ride and Labcab are very different albums. don't think you could fit any track from one onto the other without it sounding out of place (except perhaps Otha Fish could've fit on Labcab, maybe)

also Plain Rap is pretty underrated. I wasn't into it at first but it stands up well today compared to most 2000 era stuff. Guestlist is dope

couple more tracks with a 'bizarre ride'-esque vibe...
