You guys are fucking awesome. I might start a Canadian Rappers series on T.R.O.Y., and you're all getting your deserved props.
You've inspired me!
I think it's appropriate because I was born in Toronto. And I'll be first to admit my Canadian hip-hop knowledge isn't where it should be, so hopefully this gives me a chance to learn. Thanks all.

Yeah, I always hoped for more from K4ce. He was ill. I got a chance to meet and hang out with him thru my connection with Maestro. He moved to the US and was working at Select Records for a while. Not sure what happened to him after that.moves wrote:my fav canadian rapper ever was k-force, he never had an album if im right , trax on maestros albums and kishs' i think thats it, id heard 1 other song on the radio in toronto once but never tracked it down, he was maddd illl!!!.

I got this on vinyl from when I got back when it first dropped. I've always thought it was dope. My fav joint (besides the Main Source) is the Fresh B track....although i think it sounds like a lost Stezo song. Does anyone have any info on him? Did he do anything else?Jaz wrote:Who_Produced_It wrote:

Here's a dope forgotten about Canadian gem.
Maximum Definitive - Jungle Man.mp3 - 5.44MB (1992)
All I had was a VHS rip of this video off of Rap City, and I converted it into an mp3 until I could find an actual copy of it. Some years later in College I had an interview with a guy named Click but I didn't get the position. Again a few years later I was listening to the Real Freq's - Differently Still Guy Podcast and they had Click on there as the guest. From listening to that Episode I learned Click was actually part of Maximum Definitive and I believe they were from Edmonton (correct me if I'm wrong) but I always thought they were a Toronto Group. Anyway I got back in touch with Click and asked him what was up with Maximum Definitive and if they ever released Jungle Man as I loved that track and had been searching for it a decade plus! He later got back to me and told me they only released a limited cassette single, and hooked me up with the tape rip of Jungle Man which I present to y'all. Enjoy!

One of my favorite Canadian HiP HoP groups would have to be Scarborough`s Citizen Kane, consisting of emcees Spade & Kane. When asked about their name this is what they said in a 2004 interview from HipHopCanada.com (you can read it here)...
"The name just like represents - it`s an oxymoron, it`s like you`re Citizen, you`re law-abiding, you`re Kane, you`re a sinner, you know what I mean? So basically we were trying to get something that represents the balance that you have to go through in Life, you have to be law-abiding but you kind of have to be badג¦I just thought of it and then we saw the movie and we went with that whole movie theme stuff..."
I think that may be why I really DiG their music, because they kick that true to Life shit that I can relate to. First heard their music on a good ol` college HiP HoP radio show back in around `97-`98, believe it was El Karam`s "One 4 All" on 89.1 FM (Loved that show! BiG Up Karam wherever you`re at now~a~days), the trackS were "Lost Angles" & "Reality `N` Facts" (I`m gon` have to DiG them up for y`all) off the Treehouse Records released "The Epic EP", which was produced by ERF Productions & K-Cut (formerly from Main Source). The EP itself was nominated as `Best HiP HoP Album or EP` at the Canadian Urban Music Awards in 1998. A year later they dropped their debut album "Deliverance" produced by Sleepwalkaz Productions, also a Treehouse Records release & it was nominated for `Best Rap Recording` at the 2000 Juno Awards...
Citizen Kane dropped their first single back in `95 titled "Soul Survivor" & it was featured on the "It`s All Good" compilation (I`m actually lookin` for that joint myself). What`s also DoPe is back in 2000 The National Film Board of Canada produced a Rapumentary directed by Alison Duke featuring Citizen Kane titled "Raisin` Kane". This film was awarded best Canadian documentary at the Reel World Film Festival & won the HBO Best Documentary award in New York`s Urban World Film Festival. The film takeS you on the journey along with Citizen Kane into the world of independent HiP HoP as they release their first album "Deliverance". Anyway, that`s enough ramblin` from me....LoL, this album is great HiP HoP music (my opinion of course:), if ya like rugged beats & meaningful lyrics with some replay value do ya`self a favor & check it out...

Gotta be honest & say at first I only copped this back in `97 because I had seen the video for "Artical" featuring Phife (A Tribe Called Quest) & Chip-Fu (Fu-Schnickens) & was simply lovin` the track. Couldn`t find a 12 Inch or CD single at the time so I just copped the album, was glad I did though simply for the fact that it also has two KRS-One features. I`m a BiG KRS-One fan so it was a nice bonus for me....LoL, anyways this joint in my opinion wasn`t a disappointment. Of course I`m more partial to the the Reggae/HiP HoP influenced tracks like "Artical", "Scatter" & "Lyrical Shot" but the rest of the album`s vibe is nice as well...
I also DiG tracks like "Murderer" & "Looking For Love", which was also featured as the last track on `97's "Booty Call Soundtrack". This kat isn`t the Canadian~Shaggy, dude definitely brings his own vibe. Whitey Don`s a T~DoT [Toronto]~based DJ & singer with an uncanny knowledge of Reggae music & master of it`s dialect. In the early `90's he was the lead singer of Culture Shock, at the time one of Canada`s premier Reggae bands....

This StreetBeat, Break'N Out record is one of the earliest known hip hop compilations in Canada. Released in 1987, Break' N Out featured tracks by Rumble & Strong, Michie Mee & L.A. Luv and the R & B duo Street Beat. A quick glance at the credits listed on the back of the record highlights the contributions of soundcrews such as Chic Dynasty and TKO, while also shouting out the Fantastic Voyage radio showגall elements critical to the emergence and success of Canadian hip hop. The artists on this compilation were all managed by Ivan Berry, who would go on to manage the Dream Warriors and launch the highly successful Rap Essentials compilations from 1994-2001 that gave a new generation of emcees a chance to shine.
This compilation features two tracks from the duo Rumble & Strong, "What Other Emcees Sound Like" and " Strong Will Survive". Rumble & Strong were the two remaining members of a crew called T.O. Vice, one of the first emcee crews in Toronto to record their rhymes on vinyl. The Michie Mee & L.A. Luv tracks included on this record were "Elements of Style" and "Run for Cover". The hybrid toasting and rapping on "Elements of Style" included an introduction by KRS-One in which he bigs up Michie as the "Cultural Representative of Canada". Importantly, all the tracks by Rumble & Strong and Michie Mee & L.A. Luv were produced by Scott L.A. Rock and KRS-One. This record is said to be the last record Scott LA Rock produced before his untimely passing.
