What Rappers Who Been Out 20+ Years Are U Still Checkin For?

Post by Weekend Warrior »

What rappers who came out in 1992 or before are you still diggin and checkin for in 2012???

Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles (1986)
Kool G Rap (1986)
Jay-Z (1986/87)
Q-Tip (1988/89)
Large Professor (1989)
Sadat X (1989)
Pete Rock (1989/90)
Redman (1990)
Nas (1990/91)
EDO.G (1991)
Genius/GZA (1991)
Common Sense (1991/92)
Ghostface Killah (1992/93)
Method Man (1992/93)
Raekwon (1992/93)

I'm pretty much checkin for shit from all of them, except maybe Jay-Z. I'm just tired of Jay and all his Commercial garbage that he calls Hiphop not to mention his last couple of albums have, for the most part, been wack to me. Everyone on the list had somethin out in 2011 or is expected to have somethin out in 2012. I know there's others who are still puttin out shit that's at least decent... who did I forget?

**EDIT**
I guess you gotta throw Snoop Dogg in the mix since he came out in 1991, but he's kinda in the same boat that Jay-Z is in with me. Snoop can still make some dope shit, but for the most part, I'm not really checkin for too much of his shit these days cuz it's just not my taste.

I agree with most of your list. Gza sounds like he's on some medication but I'd still check for anything new by him. I don't really listen to new Redman material, haven't for ages. Freddie Foxxx, what the hell happened to the Pete Rock produced lp? I wish I could add Diamond D to that list but he seems to not give a shit anymore.
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

Good fuckin question... I want that shit too! But hey, at least we have the album with DJ Premier comin in March called THE KOLLEXION. It's already up for pre-order on the label's site (Gracie Productions) and I see that UGHH just put it up for pre-order as well... 2xLP and CD.

And here's three more to add to the list...

KRS-One (1986) and Masta Ace (1988)... also Show & AG (1989/90), who have a new album that's comin in 2012 that's soundin pretty good based off the leaks.

Since Masta Ace is my fav MC, I always check for new material. The same goes for pretty much every wu-tang member, oc, pete rock and large pro.
i'm not really interested in redman, jay-z, krs or nas anymore (unless there's a collabo album with premo :P )

Good shit! O.C. is supposed to come out with a full album produced by Lord Finesse this year. I hope it happens...

haha KRS-One & DJ Premier have Return Of The Boom Bip which may or may not drop this year. Preem produced that one new joint that features Nas... the Orchestra shit.

I think you're confusing 'having a pulse' with 'making interesting music'

an OC album in 2011 could be one of the most boring records ever made.

O.C. -what happened... Maybe it's the choice of beats but it seems a lot of rappers exhaust their inspiration within the first few lps. He was probably one of my faves from that period. Wicked's list is missing AZ- his choice of beats is often suspect but I'll always check out what he's making.

So you never heard the "5%" song that KRS & Primo did that features Grand Puba? It came out on DJ Premier's GET USED TO US compilation album (digital only for now) which dropped in December 2010.

<object width="420" height="215"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NOUVQCGdGFk?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NOUVQCGdGFk?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="215" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

^That song is fuckin dope!

If I want to listen to an album that sounds like it was made in 1994 I'll listen to an album that was actually made in 1994.
I dont see the point in trying to recreate that vibe, I'd rather someone tried something fresh and different like Public Enemy, De La, NWA, Wu Tang and Rakim all did in their time.

Scarface is the first name that crosses my mind.
More than 20 years in the game, never dropped a wack album, and still better than 95% of his peers.
You gotta give respect when respect is due.

Unless they've stated that as their goal, then i doubt they would try to make an album that sounds 1994 and if they did that would be fine by me. OC hasn't sounded like he was still in 94 since 94, imo. Lord finesse, well, his beats I don't think have really changed so I'll give ya that one. But i don't really remember hearing much from him in years.
I'd love to hear what they could on a co-op album.

I'm not really checking for many artists from 20 yrs ago.

DOOM
some Rae
Scarface
Kool Keith (makes a lotta garbage, imo, but always entertaining and always has a joint or three)
Sadat (hit or miss last few years)

basically I was making the point that if everyone did the 'keep it real' thing the music wouldve died by 1985.
Even Run DMC were different in their time. If they'd have followed the Sugarhill blueprint then Hip Hop wouldnt have gone anywhere.

So "keepin it real" means you're stuck in the past??? WTF?! I don't know where the hell that came from, but I highly disagree. DJ Premier has always kept it real and he's almost as good as he's always been. Masta Ace has always "kept it real" as well, along with others like Sadat X.

So what's your point???

Yep, I missed that, it's dope you're right! But again, it's just a couple of tracks total. I wouldn't even bother if it wasn't for Premier. Both Nas and KRS have proven that they don't have ears for beats imho. And that's a fucking shame because they can make dope albums. Anyway, thanks again for the KRS track, I'll keep my eyes open for the "Return of the Boom-Bip"!

Yeah, I'm kind of lost on that "keepin it real" argument.

I'm surprised no one on here is still checkin for Large Pro..

He's one of about 5 people in hip-hop i even check for anymore, and the fact he's still producing dope beats and still sounds nice on the mic.

I still check for Premier's beats and anything Masta Ace does.

Also, although i still check for anything Pete Rock produces,75% of his beats over the last 5 years have been mediocre at best.

It's a damn shame..

I know its blasphemous but I haven't heard anything so great from Primo in many years.

But I'll check for Large Pro, always tight beats and I enjoy his rhyming/voice/delivery.

Agree on PR. He's a disappointment.

Primo rarely diverts from his formula these days but still drops a few things i like each year. He's not gonna change the game but that recent Slick Rick track was cool and the tracks he's done with Fat Joe are decent.
Its a shame he doesnt work with quality MCs on a more regular basis.

When Pete Rock gets it right he kills it, doesn't happen too often now, maybe. It's quite a long time ago now but some of the Petestrumentals beats were dope. Premier seems to stick to his formula too much so his beats become a bit predictable.

MF
anything Pete Rock related
1 in 5 Primo product
and sympathy purchases for the likes of The Beatnuts and Large Pro (although that Neek The Exotic collab record was surprisingly dope and a "must cop" regardless)
