Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier (DJ Set in Japan/2 hr video)
"illest1ne" posted this today in another thread because he doesn't have enough posts to make a thread yet. I figured this is pretty epic event for dinosaurs and non dinosaurs alike, whether you're sick of hearing their names a lot lately or not.
Honestly, I'm only 10 minutes into it, but just the title makes this worth checking automatically. So far, they're starting off with some JB funk shit, can't really go wrong there.
Thanks illest1ne.
Peep it, no need for any more of an intro:

Okay, I see it's more of a collabo joint, really not a battle. And, OMG why do Primo's vinyls look like that? Are they using serato? ZOMG!!

No doubt man. I was being sarcastic about the serato thing, really not that big of a deal, imo. But yeah, they throwing down some joints for sure, I'm still listening now, shits dope.

Thanks.
But you gotta give it up to him that with Year Round he still puts out everything on vinyl.
Premo had this mixtape "No Talent Required" with CDJ's and Serato on the cover. But he's using that for some time now, and he has to if he wants to play new 'records' on his radio show.illest1ne wrote: The unfortunate thing is they ARE using Serato, and correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't Primo do a whole bit knocking DJs who use Serato?

Whattup illest1ne! Thanks for this. And for the record, Pete Rock was the one dissing Serato for the longest time and then for some reason, he finally converted in 2009 I think. DJ Premier has always been ok with Serato, but he has always said you need to EARN IT meaning you need to actually own records, know how to dig for records, lug crates of records to gigs and after doing all that for a few years, then you can graduate to Serato. Personally, and I know all of PF knows this already, but I can't stand Serato. It makes shit more convenient, but it's LAME and the sound quality is not as good. I represent REAL vinyl all day every day and since 1989! 20,000+ Hiphop records and counting.illest1ne wrote:Peace! Thanks for that Verge. I mentioned something like that to Preem on his radio show last Friday and his response was "Of course I still put out vinyl... How am I gonna be a Hiphop label and not press vinyl?" Word up!Krisch wrote:But you gotta give it up to him that with Year Round he still puts out everything on vinyl.
"Wicked = Genuinely loves Hiphop and respects it because he grew up during the time when it wasn't full of southern mongoloids and Lil Wayne rappers. From his mixes you can tell he knows his shit. The problem is, when you are a smart dude preaching to a bunch of fucking morons, you end up getting singled out as the douche."

Not to drag this argument out for the 900000th time but if you use decent quality MP3s or WAVs and the sound quality is fine faggot.
Thats why any Hip Hop DJ that people would pay to see uses it - Riz, Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, Tony Touch etc - If it sounded shit they wouldnt use it.
If you want further proof download one of my mixes and tell me which tracks are are MP3s and which are off vinyl. Guarantee you cant tell.

And yes, if you use good quality mp3's the sound quality is FINE, but not great like real vinyl. Real talk.

not in all cases - theres enough vinyl out there thats shittily pressed or badly mastered. You get a decent remastered MP3 or CD copy and you'll hear things in the track you never heard before.Wicked wrote: And yes, if you use good quality mp3's the sound quality is FINE, but not great like real vinyl. Uhhhhhh, in pretty much all cases for me, YES. Why? Because I don't really fuck with lame bootlegs unless that's the ONLY way something was pressed. So in a case like that, sure, there's a slight possibility that the mp3 might actually be better quality. But come on, that's like 1 song outta 1,000 or some shit. Again, mp3's lose and vinyl wins (as always).step son wrote:not in all cases - theres enough vinyl out there thats shittily pressed or badly mastered. WOW!
I was almost afraid to say the same thing..
Pete and Premier are my top 2 producers of all time but watching this was painful.
Like you said too many well known joints plus Pete playing "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" c 'mon..
If i'm going to pay money to see my favorite producers spin play better shit, because honestly there was nothing really special about Pete's or Premier's sets, plus waaaay too much yappin and yelling.
It would've been cool if they played some more obscure breaks and underground hip-hop then just joints that have been played to death over the years.
Very disapointing video and the fact i can't stand VIMEO.
That site always seems to fuck up and buffer to slow.

Agreed. I usually get disappointed when I go and see DJ Premier spin cuz he gets on the mic WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY too much and all that. Not to mention, he usually plays shit everyone knows and there's never really anything special about his set other then the fact it's HIM! I've seen Pete Rock spin numerous times and he's 10x better live. He doesn't get on the mic and he mixes/cuts/scratches and does it right. I hope Pete comes back to the Bay soon, i'd happily gobble on his cock...william g. wrote: Pete and Premier are my top 2 producers of all time but watching this was painful.
